How Much Should You Spend on a Mountain Bike?

In today's video we're talking about budget full suspension mountain bikes. What exactly is a 'budget' full-suspension mountain bike? Eye of the beholder. If I spend 1,500 to 2,000 USD on a street E-bike. I am going to expect durability and safe batteries within it's use class. I do not call those "Cheap". The 5 to 10k bikes are a different level of use. I mean one could call the 5K bike cheap in the shadow of the 10K bike.

@@justinfournier1285 It’s over $300 less. Just like Velocirax is basically a 1Up recon knockoff but Velocirax is $300 less than a 1Up. So here the breakdown: 1Up Recon 5-Bike Rack = $1,200 on the 1 Up site. @ I have a local made version of a vertical rack and the main issue I wanted to avoid is the rocking while you drive on forest service roads. I went with a version that has an anti-rocking piece that is Ike the receiver side of the hitch that goes into the receiver you tighten down that pulls back against the hitch bar but it makes the rack harder to insert as it wiggles around when you are trying to insert the hitch into the receiver. It also weighs a ton. I imagine it would be lighter if made from aluminum and wouldn’t rust, but probably even more expensive. No ideal solution yet.

@ JB Racks has an anti-wobble hitch bracket. I haven’t tested it yet but it should work good.

Loving this JB Rack. After using it for a week now I’m loving a couple things: 1.) takes up way less space in my garage than my previous rack due to vertical freestanding design. 2.) rolls around the garage with ease and easy to load / unload bikes. 3.) No damage to bikes (unlike wall hooks). Anyway, figured I’d leave a comment. Let me know if you ever want a long term review of this thing 🤔

Options are good, and I'm glad to see more quality bike racks on the market. If all you want to do is store bikes in the garage, this seems like an extremely expensive option. Velocirax is definitely a sturdier rack than this, and I'd feel more comfortable using ebikes with it. If you're just using regular bikes, this seems like a good way to save some cash.

No you don't, mountain bikes are pretty simple things, in fact most manufacturers just design the frame, and then they get that frame made in a factory in Taiwan, then they just attach components to it that were made by other companies, like forks, wheels, and so on, you could even design your own frame if you really wanted to, so why spend big money on certain brand name bikes when you can get a similar bike for much cheaper? the frames are probably even made in the same factory.

@alonsorivas8648 I think that’s an idea that briefs well but isn’t how most people do it. Most of us get the bike we can afford and slowly upgrade over time. Definitely not the most cost effective way to do it, but it’s what most people do. Or at least that the way I’ve always done it LOL

Nice job on this breakdown dude. One thing people have to understand is that this is not a cheap sport to get into. $1500-2500 is budget for this sport. Any cheaper for a new full sus and you are usually going to end up with something that is constantly breaking down. That sucks the fun out of riding

So what? Compare plastic Magura levers with metal levers. Magura makes great calipers but stay away from their levers. XT means made for trail riding. I've had too many weak bike parts break like a Zee hub breaking in 27 pieces not even doing anything. SLX is fine for basic biking but not for anything downhill. XT is cooler than SLX, that's a fact.

I bought a Giant Talon back in October for $600. I’ve put another $500 into it since then. It’s a nice bike but I quickly realized I wanted more. I went back and forth between a polygon or an Ari. I ultimately decided on the Ari Cascade Peak Pro for $3000.

You are spot on w this breakdown. Also, bike choice matters a lot on how skilled you are and what terrain you ride. What you should pay for first are the R&D/kinematics and the quality of a frame imo. The rest is just what you hang on the frame. You can buy a lesser frame with $5K of components. Yes, the bike will very capable, but it will have limits to its overall performance. Also, you can buy an expensive frame, like a Santa Cruz w entry level components. It will be capable bc of the frame quality and suspension design, but the components hold it back. I prefer to buy the best frame I can get for the $ w reliable components. Components will fail and will need to be replaced. That is when you upgrade. I bought a 2023 Rocky Mountain Instinct C30 with a full Deore group set, Marzocchi Z2 Bomber 150, Fox DPS, etc... reliable but mid-level components. The bike rocks as is and blows away my 2018 Stumpy w XTR/XT, etc. I bought the Rocky for $2900 at a 40% discount from a MSRP of $4700. I find that a budget bike for what I wanted. I think Rocky will restructure and stay relevant in the mtb industry after the bankruptcy filing a couple of weeks ago. Canadian bike makers are fearing the proposed tariffs and getting their books in order to survive the long haul. I don't think Rocky is insolvent and on its death bed, but they are going to slim down for sure. Probably no UCI Downhill nor EWS pro teams in 2025.
