London's Two Least Used Bus Routes: London's Awkward Routes - Episode 4
I'm sure most of you will have heard about the 389 and 399 which both creep around Barnet for only 5 hours a day. These two routes operate on hourly frequencies and are both perfect for me to cover in this video.
It's been about 30 years since the introduction of the current 399 and it has been 28 years since what ended up as part of current 389 when the two routes were at one stage merged with one another.
In this video, I'll discuss the current setup with the two routes, the histories of both the services and how I believe they could be improved. If you liked this video, make sure to like, subscribe and share this video, as it massively helps me out when you do! On with the video...

(NEW!) Liverpool's Forgotten Suburban Railway: Britain's Lost Railways - Episode 1

Welcome to my first episode of Britain's Lost Railways! Today I'll be discussing the North Liverpool Extension Line, a railway once traversing through much of Liverpool suburbia from Hunts Cross and Halewood to Aintree Central until the 1960s when the majority of it was shut, bar the Gateacre stub which closed in 1972. This series I hope many of you are looking forward to me making videos on, I...
The London Heritage Railways That Were Never Meant To Be: Why Not?

However there is quite a lot to know about this bus route, the history behind it politically and the importance of it for the 20 years or so its been in operation. As the title suggests, the 603 has always had frequent calls for it to be made a 7-day-a-week all day service over the years...although it's never quite ...

The Watford DC Line parallels the West Coast Main Line for much of its route and is very synonymous with London Euston to many rail enthusiasts. Typically the 3xx routes are given to more remote or lesser used routes, mostly single deckers. However some do break the rule as they are very busy such as the 321 or 333 which are replacements for previously shortened routes.

These buses may not be classified as awkward but I still think they should be looked at before the Silvertown Tunnel opens. And thats the 129 and 335 buses from North Greenwich to Kidbrooke/Lewisham. Especially the 129 bus if you know its history, it barely went anywhere. 330 is another one as well since its a Silvertown now.

I have an idea to save this branch. Just like Romford to Upminster with Emerson Park in the middle, how about converting it into a London Overground service. I also have these ideas as well, it sounds ludicrous I know and where the money is going to come from but hear me out on this one. The Bakerloo line should first serve Beckenham Junction, then Bromley North and finally Bromley South where the trains terminate and connects with other rail services, hoping the extension beyond Lewisham is given permission. That way we can still save Bromley North and other vital links. No matter where you are in the town centre you are on the Bakerloo line. My next suggest is this one, its a bit more wilder and I am jumping ahead here and we probably never see this solution but here it is. TFL and Department for Transport really should look into Crossrail 3. Crossrail 3 should improve links from North West London to South East London. Supporting the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Met lines The North West section should have two branches serving Watford Junction, Harrow, Wembley Park, West Hampstead, Finchley Central, Mill Hill East and Edgware. The Northern line shuttle from Finchley Central to Mill Hill East should be replaced by the service and the new tracks should link Mill Hill East to Edgware due to its history. West Hampstead could be a major interchange point with Thameslink, Overground and Jubilee line. Quicker journey times for Wembley and Harrow. The South section should definitely involve serving Elephant and Castle, Camberwell, Peckham Rye, Lewisham and Hither Green. It then splits to serve Lee, Mottingham, New Eltham, Sidcup, Bexley and Craford and the other branch to Grove Park, Chislehurst, Petts Wood, Orpington and Sevenoaks replacing the two Southeastern rail services. That way the Grove Park to Bromley will have a useful interchange with Sunridge Park and serves Bakerloo line and Crossrail 3. It will serve both Camberwell and Peckham Rye due to Bakerloo line extension opportunity loss in consultation. This is just my idea/suggestion, like I said before where is the money going to come from and also Bakerloo line extension and Crossrail 2 hasnt started yet due to pandemic and lack of finances. Please dont roast me, I am aware of the issues and I am just offering a solution. This was all inspired by the Elizabeth line changing commuters lives from East to West. I really do hope the Bakerloo line extension and Crossrail 2 happens as soon as possible. Im open to other people's thoughs and lets be nice to each other. 🙂

I haven't been down The Bishops Avenue for a long time. Last I heard, a lot of the houses were pretty much derelict. Maybe that's just the East Finchley end. Quite a few were just bolt-holes for wealthy Arabs to stay when they came over to have the fun they're not allowed to in their home countries. They were crazy! You'd go into their houses and they'd dump an entire forest of 'herbs' on the table and tell you to help yourself. Then it was off to a club to meet ladies. One guy used to park illegally outside Harrods because he'd rather pay the fine than walk a couple of minutes. The amount of parking fines those guys racked up. I don't think most, if any, were ever paid. Crazy times! I always thought it was strange that buses were driving down it, but now I think about it, it's a long-ish road so I imagine it's used by the people who work in the houses, which would explain why it runs infrequently.

Brilliant. I knew the history of the line already but it was great to have it brought to life the way you have just presented it . And thanks for learning the local pronunciations . No gayt acre from you . But a proper "gattaker" you must have asked a scouser😁😁. . Did you know the original "loop and link " line plan for merseyrail was to have terminated at Gatacre. It made it as far as Garston but the money ran out partly thanks to runaway inflation in the mid 1970's So was opened with Garston as the temporary terminus . Later extended to Hunts cross by which time the rails had been lifted to gatacre. Im old enough to remember the whole lot being built from 1972 to 77 . There was also a plan to re open the line to where it goes under broad green station approach like an outer loop with broad green as an interchange . ( For the children's hospital ) But was decided that local buses could do the same thing. ( Even though they couldn’t) Keep Up your excellent work Cheers.

There is no need to build an additional spur at Bordesley. With diesel multiple units, the trains could reverse at Small Heath along the already-existing connection. which the New Street to Camp Hill lines will be using. But New St. is already overcrowded. How are they going to thread two additional trains per hour into the current working timetable without reducing services elsewhere? You forget that the Midland line through Camp Hill was originally part of the Midland Railway, and, before they redesignated it the Cross-City Line and sent the services through to Lichfield, the pattern of services was from Worcester to Derby, which also served the now-closed stations at Saltley, Bromford Bridge and Castle Bromwich, the reopening of which has been promised for as long as the Camp Hill line reopening. By the way, moves to reopen the Camp Hill line didn't start in the 2010s ...they started in the 1960s.

    • @somenorthlondoner
      @somenorthlondoner Місяць тому

The suggestion of additional lines between Moor St. and Snow Hill makes no sense. Moor St. was built as an extension to Snow Hill because it was impossible to add extra lines through the tunnel, which used to be a cutting, but was boarded over when they built the Great Western Arcade and the North Western Arcade. It was impossible to add new lines then, and even more impossible now.

the thing about chartwell is that it isn't a village or a hamlet, it's just the mansion so it doesn't make sense for there to be a regular service. also while i agree that improving bus services around westerham, oxted and the nearby towns is valid, it's far outside the scope of TfL and should be organised by kent county council

Until they got their new Class 707s, the Northern City Line was a heritage railway from the 1980s pretending to be a commuter line into London. Reopen Mill Hill East to Edgware as that's out in the sticks anyway.

    • @somenorthlondoner

Not too sure on whether it’s out in the sticks…I think there would be merit reopening it although it would be extremely difficult and the vast majority of it particularly through MHB would need to be tunnelled. Maybe you could reopen MHE to Copthall or something as a heritage railway but it would be quite boring and short and the line side property purchases to build the railway on wouldn’t be worth it
