The Smart Garden: Rom Yen House
Thailand
Приєднався 21 сер 2023
In 2021 during the peak of the pandemic, I took the first step towards a personal goal of mine, which was to live a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle on a small farmstead .
To that end, we acquired some land in NE Thailand and in the middle of 2022, I left the corporate world so that I could live and work solely towards that dream.
I would like to take you with me on what has been, and still is such an amazing journey. To setup up a fully off grid, sustainable farmstead in Thailand - from a fallow greenfield site to a fully self sustaining farmstead.
There have been many ups and downs but overall it has been immensely rewarding
We are using permaculture and agroforestry techniques to develop a small organic garden/farmstead of around 5 rai in size. I would love for you to join us, on this journey of discovery.

Fear stopped me from watching this. 😅 Quite a deep one. Thank you. 🙏🏽
Thats ok @mumster It appears to have stopped everyone else watching it too.... 😉
Hi Matt. I think what you have achieved is fantastic - and so much of it is down to your mindset. Even knowing the challenges that would be in the way, you’ve done it one step at a time (stepping off with your left foot of course!). I’m writing this as I’m sitting on a train full of commuters heading into London and wondering how many of these people are following their dreams? I’m lucky to have made a positive choice to do what I do and can change if I don’t enjoy it any longer. You did that when you walked away from corporate life and that is admirable. You are creating your own reality from those initial thoughts a few years ago, which is really remarkable. Keep it going, keep the videos coming and I will talk to you very soon!
How nice !! Bruno on that straw. You are right...My dream is to sit by the nature , listen to the nature sound , calm , around with nice and simple people....I wish i can follow my dream soon...Hope you have a good time.
Thank you knews! I hope you can follow your dream quicker than you had hoped! Thank you for the comment!
Good points mate. As you know it's finances for us. I agree with your point on leasing as an initial step especially if it can be 30+30. I also think it can be done cheaply with accomodation. The original container while not ideal could easily be used as a tiny home, with minimal cost. Solar on that with another shipping container as a store could work at least for those who are on tight budgets. To the point on age... Actually most people will need to be 50++ I think, to do something like this. Retired or on the way to being retired, to have the Visa and time to dedicate to the project. I'm so proud of everything you have achieved mate. Not so long back we couldn't even drive in. Now look at it. Amazing.
You are always supporting mate and I really appreciate that. Chat soon my friend!
You are an inspiration Matty!! I would love to do what you are doing.. fear of not knowing where or how to start, and the comfort & security of my job (which I do quite enjoy, but it’s not what I want to do forever!) are What’s stopping me! (And figuring out what it is I actually want to do!). Def have given me some food for thought and maybe time to start thinking and doing some research and figure it out!!
Hey Nat Nat, its never easy making decisions like this as there will always be pros and cons. Hope you can bring Mia to see the farm one day and play with Rudie. Take care and thanks for your supportive comments as ever.
Sooooo Precious🥰💕🦋!
Ah thank you! Thanks for taking the time to comment so appreciated!
Absolutely beautiful. Your living the dream . Look at that beautiful happy dog of yours that was the best part ! Thank you for all the smiles ( Oahu 🌸).
Hi Oahu, thank you for your kind words and support. Really appreciated!
Ollas work extremely well in our AZ desert climate. I never thought to make my own ollas. They are pricey online. Thank you for a great how to video.
We do this. We put drip sprinklers into it so it keeps filled. I guess it helps?
Hi There, Things definitely improving now, hope to see you soon!
I have a hard working dog team too! They place land mines in walking areas and obsess on the little lizards that live in the garden!
I had to laugh out loud at this comment!. Yes you are spot on with the land mines and lizards. The good news here in thailand is that generally it's so hot the landmines are like little dried out hard bullets and don't fortunately tend to stuck to shoes or cause problems!. Thanks for the comment t made me really laugh.
Level indicator us a good idea as it keeps you from causing too much spill over which not only wastes water but slows down the movement of moisture through the terracotta as the water should move from wet to dry. I would stick with the cork or wood stopper, which would seal the opening better than the indicator and have less evaporation, but carry a level indicator with me when I go out to check the water levels and stick that indicator in after removing the cork.
I tried this but my Ollas were too small and the spot I put them were the worst …. I will do it right next time. Thank you - love the level idea too. Do you sell these ollas ?
Honestly I wouldn't be too hard on yourself! Any Ollas will add moisture to the soil around them and even tiny amounts can have a major impact on soil microbiology. Keep trying they can make a really big difference !
If you've got a lot of plant though this hack will get expensive. I see a really good use tho' for new trees you just planted. In the USA clay pots are 4xpensive and the trays are more tgan the pots! Crazy.
Your dogs are so cute and obviously love you! Good dad!
Haha thank you so much. There aren't even really my dogs they just sort of came with the land and stayed, and then had puppies and then....you get the idea. I love them to bits, for me they are such a blessing. Thanks for the comment!
Placed my first clay vase in the earth yesterday. I will be using more as I add more young trees.
I honestly thing this is one of the best ways of using Ollas, for specific plants that need a bit more support likesmall trees! Great comment
Terracing is the goat of uneven landscape in agriculture, and it can be tweaked to make swale.
Very true - I don't think we are quite steep enough for terracing but you are completely correct! Thanks for the comment appreciated!
Thank you ! Your dogs are so adorable! Much love from Oahu . My babies send their love too ( maile girl , koni loni , abs shire and chun chun kitty :) how did you keep the dogs shirt on so snug ?
This is such an amazing comment, it really warmed my heart. Thank you for the kind wishes from the whole "family" sending love and best wishes back too ❤️
Sorry meant to say the first shirt she ripped off so I sort of custom draped one of my T shirts, cut a whole for her tail and then draped and tied it in key areas. It lasted nearly 4 days before she destroyed it!
Thank you for responding personally my dear . Sounds just like my little precious destroyers lol . My babies drive my absolutely bonkers but they are gifts from Heaven above ( better than any human friend I’d say ) . What kind words to say my dear . If only folks like us didn’t live a gabillion miles away I would love to introduce your precious critters to mine we could talk about all the terrible things they have done in the last 5 minutes lol . I do love them so , they are my prize possessions ( well I guess I should also include my husband who I adore and my two boys LOL can’t forget them :) . I have 11 bunnies( I bought one didn’t know she was pregnant then came 11 ) , 1 cat 3 dogs , yes - my life is a whirlwind. Your videos are wonderful but so much more delightful sharing your tender heart with those smiling precious luv bugs . Take care from Hollie 🥰🐶🐱🐰. Geez Louise , how could I forget my chickens : let me introduce you to Pebbles and Sweetie 🐔🐔💕and to think I live in the suburbs lol oh my goodness let’s not forget most importantly: Jesus Loves you Precious :)
Where did you buy your Terra cotta pots in that shape?
Embarrasingly I had to order online. I have now found a local supplier right in the village which is great news!
Saw a video about OLLAS a few years ago, and suggested to put a cork or ping pong ball on the end of a bamboo skewer in the olla for a water level indicator . They liked my idea! Your idea is great, too!😊❤
These are all great ideas too! Thanks for sharing!
What are you doing the pipe fills with rainwater or irrigation water?
Hi there, it's mainly borehole water but I also use rainwater collected from the roof areas too! Thanks for the comment
Is that a Decker Terrier?
Hi There, now I always thought she was a jack russel cross but now you mention it - I think it is likely she has some Decker (Rat) Terrier in her. She is an amazing hunter and has many of the traits of a decker!. Thanks for the comment!
bead the silocone then place pot and saucer together ... land marker and wine corks are great ... once the olla is in the ground size of pot doesnt matter so much but you only get radius to 10 inches max water dispersion to plants... so a 20" radius pot will only give 10" access if air is really dry and hot... a coin / round over the top of the olla fill hole is awesome completely cover the olla you can also fill a saucer with water to fill the olla fill hole this works really well for watering ground fowl like quail remember olla may become root bound from the outside if you plan on recovering them latter
Love the floating salamander and lizard protectors! If you put a big funnel instead, you could harvest rain to fill them.
Thank you so much for your comment appreciated!
Very neat!
Ah thank you tons for taking the time to make a comment - always appreciated!
Amazing idea and video 🥳🥳🥳 get a patent!💪🏾😎💯
haha maybe! Thanks for your support!
Nice, but you could save a step by finding a local potter to make you an olla for the same price as the flowerpot you siliconed together? Not saying it's easy to find a local potter, but if you happen to have on in your community you should work together to make ollas popular again.
I completely agree with this and it is the best sustainable solution! Thanks for your comment!
I have a dream like yours. I hope i can doing this by the time I am 60. How old are you?
Hi John, @johnlim6108 this is a really interesting question actually and something I have spent considerable time thinking about. FYI I started this journey 3 years ago - when I was 55 and I walked away from a senior corporate role. Its not really about age but you do need to prepare yourself and think a little differently the more years you have under your belt. You have actually given me an idea to talk about this in a video! Many thanks for the comment - really appreciated!
I had no idea that terra cotta was water-permeable!
Hi Nate, @garfieldnate yeah amazing isnt it? Very slightly water permeable - they have also been used as water filters because of this! If they are glazed however they then become very water tight! Thanks for the comment - really appreciated!
Oye Cómo Va.
Hi @environmentaldataexchange3906 Very Good! & Thanks for the comment!
I use plastic bottles filled with water that I put into the holes in the bottom of the pots after I have filled them for the first time. I refill these plastic bottles when they are very low which keeps my pots constantly full.
Hi DJ, @djcoffman6505 sounds a cunning idea to me - work smarter not harder everytime! Thanks for your comment and input - appreciated!
We use the triangular longer terracotta pots, bung it with our old cork from bottles. Been using for a long time. Sure helps in summer. We have in our vege raised beds, surrounded by thick mulch so only have to water 1x weekly except baby seedlings. We top up with tank water as needed. Our friend has added tunes via his watering system so they keep full when he turns it on as like us they have about 10 in the garden so it saves him bending down as he's in his 80's. They have amazing veg
Hi @rosemaryryan6455 this is wonderful and pleased he gets such great performance from such a simple system. I am shocked at how effective these seem to be - but they appear to work absolute miracles for the soil health and provide "just enough". I am also adding these to my raised beds by the way! Thanks for the comment really appreciated and great to hear your experiences too.
I love how dedicated your helpers are to your mission. And they never complain!!👍🇺🇸
Hi @zoeyshoots yes! They're little grafters all 3 of them. All joking aside ...even though they technically aren't my dogs, they just live on my land! I love them to bits, they are such a huge blessing to me!
I would like to do this. And put a mark to indicate critical low level. And figure a way to fill all up with a flip of a switch. Time savers for me are extremely important. Wish i could do things in the garden in a slow way, but it is simply not possible.
Hi @DGibsonxio - I think your last line says it all - it SIMPLY isn't possible. I did some thinking along these lines as I was making the video as I had similar thoughts - can we automate this. Actually we probably can but to do so would be pretty expensive and complex. In which case you might as well install actual drip irrigation or other irrigation systems. I think the beauty of this is in its simplicity. And can be used where the irrigation systems aren't setup for. Thanks for the comment its really appreciated that you took the time to actually comment and support the channel in this way.
@@TheSmartGardenRomYenHouse the slow way in my garden seems impossible because I can get it planted ok. When it comes time for actual taking care of it, weeding and watering, my farm related job comes into play and I am so busy from about 30 minutes after daylight till dark all summer and fall. Our projected end of season is November 15 this year. With sporadic calls all winter and random during early spring.
Great video! New sub Hit that like button on your way in 👍
@Mr.G_Rattlesnake Legend! Many thanks for the sub and supporting comment!
Why not seal the olla with clay. Then bake it in your oven for 3 days at 150 degrees f.
Hi @DHunt-w2h It is definitely one solution worth looking into further! Thanks for your comment!
BEST
@daynight4902 Thank You for taking time to write a comment - really appreciated!
Great idea on the water indicator. Thank you
@annharlan8926 Really pleased you found it useful and a good idea. Thank you for the comment!
Great ideas!!! Your helpers really did their jobs, eh! Thanks! I'll (try to) remember these ideas if I should ever need them! Thank God, we get plenty of rain, and hubby waters the garden every evening.
I didn't appreciate untill recently what a huge blessing it is having unlimited water supply. You can still use this method of watering aswell if you want too. The helpers are always gorgeous honestly. Thanks for the comment really appreciated!
@@TheSmartGardenRomYenHouse it was the "4000 YEARS OLD"... that caught my eye when your video just slid across my feed. As I am a Bible student (I dare not say scholar), those words always catch me. Yours was a very interesting video. Thanks for sharing! I thank God, though, that we have gotten .... (and i'm afraid to say this - lest I curse us) our share of rain for the season!
You got a product there...call it a water pumpkin!
I love this lol
Powerful 😊Voice.
They look like pumpkins
Donno, but all those I've seen are three gallon jars with a long neck and flaring opening. People used these to water gardens in the Sonoran Desert for long ages. Swales and dams were common as well. niio
Hi @MarSchlosser Absolutely originally the design you mention is common across different cultures too. This is just a (not so wonderful!) attempt at reproducing cheaply with moden methods such an age old technology and have some fun in a sustainable way at the same time. Thanks for the comment always appreciated!
I would use clay to "glue" the terracotta pieces together. Can be bought in most gardencenters.
Hi Ken, @kenaar I agree that would be a more sustainable solution - I will try that in the future. Many thanks for your comment.
@@TheSmartGardenRomYenHouseterracotta pots about that size by me in Louisiana USA would be near $10 for each pot and the bottoms would cost about the same! Also I have never seen an terracotta pots shaped just like yours. Ours all have straight angled sides.
Any opinion on using a "ditch witch" to cut a 1-2 foot deep trench in the swale to facilitate faster water infiltration? Thanjs
Hi Will @willbass2869, Adding volume and surface area should aid water infiltration in general. In our situation though the soil is so overfarmed and compacted that the water just sits on the surface and takes for ever to infiltrate the soil (because of compaction). Over time this will improve as we grow more and more trees and other plants on and around the swales as the roots will aid water ingress. If you have good healthy soil already this will probably help alot. It doesn't hurt trialing different techniques such as this to see what performs better. Many thanks for taking the time to comment Will - really appreciated!
Wow.now I learned something 😅
@conorgraafpietermaritzburg3720 Thats great! Glad you found it useful! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Love the level indicator and those helpers.
Hi Mum, They are soooo hard working!
That's awesome...And it's a good idea...I will make it one for keep my cocktail cold.
😂😂😅❤
Mateeeee. This is awesome. Love these ideas. Just wondering if it's worth soaking tye pots in the little pond first to soak it through? Maybe help speed up the process? Maybe cap on the end of the depth indicator. Heavey rain might fill it? Anyway awesome mate and a great solution for people with smaller gardens etc.. who are going on holiday or away. Keep em coming mate. Awesome.
@davewillcox All great ideas mate will definitely try these..!
