In Illinois, servers won a labor dispute related to this very thing. The judge ruled they cannot be forced to work for less than minimum wage when performing duties not relating to being a server, and that would not provide the opportunity to make tips...so fight that that shit!

agree! i work there and we only get 2.56 an hour and we spend about 2 or so hours after our shift has ended washing dishes and restocking and such. and when people tip shit we are basically free labor.

whoa whoa, i think i misread before, but no, applebees servers dont have to pay out of their own pocket when they make mistakes. i've never heard of that and i've worked at two locations and know various managers from other stores. at more upscale restaurants though that is the case if it's the servers fault for ringing in the wrong item though, but they know that when they get hired.

Well I'm here to tell you that it is illegal, and you could possibly sue he company to get your money reimbursed.

Um I worked at Applebee's for a few years and yes, employees pay for their meals, though it's usually discounted some.

there are a few states that have mandatory minimum wage for servers

& your server most likely had to pay for your bill .. sadly.

i dont know what applebees you work for my the one i work for in indiana i get paid $2.13 an hour so please let me know so i can move there and make more on my check than i am now plus after i get cut im not required to wash dishes or prep anything

I went to apple bees with my dad and it was terrible. The waiter never checked our table. My food took forever and by the time I finished my dads food still wasn't ready. Evn though I waited twenty minutes before eating bc o wanted to wait. When my dad asked someone to speak to the manager she took forever and when she came she said something about a mixup and didn't offer us anything. My dad made us leave without paying and I felt like a criminal. THE END

Gotta love how applebees will force their servers to do NON-TIPPED work after being cut (rolling, cutting, misc prep, dishwashing) and then claim tip credit to the government even though their employees have been cut and are not receiving tips and are therefore only being paid 3.63 for work that should be paid 7.50 an hour for. Yet they are too cheap to actually hire a separate person to do these tasks.
