LIGHTROOM RAW EDIT : AUTOPSY of a RAW EDIT with GREAT CONTRAST
DEHAZE works great!!
When we start with a RAW file in LIGHTROOM, even one a few years old, we have great flexibility in LIGHTROOM no edit to our liking. The LIGHTROOM{s DEHAZE slider give us CONTRAST and SATURATION with an intelligent approach to images that need it. And the flexibility of LIGHTROOM masks gives us the ability to retouch specific parts of the photo.
In this video we start with the final result and then we turn off ALL the edits in LIGHTROOM. We then see the effect of turning each edit one at a time until we end up with the final image again. I call this approach to show you what I did the RAW AUTOPSY.

      Hi Pierre. Thanks for the suggestion. I need to do some testing. I would have assumed that scaling just stretches the image reducing resolution or reproducing pixels and therefore reducing detail. But I’ll take a look.

      Thanks for sharing a great suggestion. The DNGs are large files, 2-3 times the size of the original RAW. If you edit the JPEGs, as you said, you can always generate a new DNG as noise removal software improves and copy the old JPEG edits to a new JPEG. Thanks for watching.

    Lovely photos. As someone from the UK I have yet to visit the lake District. I’ve passed by on the way to Scotland but never been, I really need to! • @AndrewWilliams-vg5lg
      @AndrewWilliams-vg5lg Місяць тому

      @@PabloGEPhoto Hey thanks for the quick reply! I'm not sure the difference between the desktop and cloud version. I'm using the "app" on a Mac (also new to Mac OS), but I don't see the term "Classic" in my version anywhere. Under system info I see what's called Adobe Lightroom CC and also as follows: "Lightroom version: 7.3 arm64 [ 20240507-1433-eff47f4 ] (May 7 2024)" I've even tried searching "print" in the software and nothing comes up. I'd really like to figure this out (or maybe I need to look into Lightroom Classic) because all of my photos have printed great so far except for ONE particular photo where the foreground is coming out exceptionally darker than what displays on my monitor or phone (even with my monitor brightness at 15/100)

      My pleasure. Only turns on my if you had use any of the intelligent masks and then use the healing brush in areas covered by those masks. The more traditional masks (grad and radial filter, etc) get computed mathematically every time the visualization is updated. But the intelligent masks create a mask (s) that is stored in the catalog that has to be updated to reflect the healing corrections.

    Thank you for posting this informative video. I plan to visit in October. Two questions: First, I probably won't have a flash with me. I have pretty good technique with handholding and will be shooting a Nikon Z8 with IBIS and 24-120 f4 lens, but could also use a support. You mentioned that tripods are not as practical. Would a monopod be more practical to get sharper photos? Second, would an ultra-wide angle (14-30 f4) lens be useful? Thanks in advance!

    • @PabloGEPhoto
      @PabloGEPhoto Місяць тому

      Hi Peter. I will definitely take a monopod to help stabilize. As I mention in my video the paths are not very wide, and with other visitors around just get two tight. Cameras with IBIS now give us much more opportunity for handholding. I suggest you out your shutter in 2 second delay to even help more. You will have a lot of opportunity to use your 24-120mm lens. I am not so sure about your ultrawide. There will be some opportunities in the Big Room to capture with something wider than 24mm. I think it will be better to have with you than not and then say “darn, I wish I had a wider lens”. 😀 October will be a great time to visit. If you have time, go to White Sands NP about 3 1/2 hrs away. Great time of year for White Sands. I also made a video for White Sands. I visited both in the same trip and complement each other very well. One dark and one very bright. Enjoy your trip and please do share your photos.

      @@PabloGEPhoto Thank you very much for the personalized advice. As it happens, I will be heading to White Sands right after Carlsbad, and will spend a day there. I watched your video on WS last night, and got some great tips. I was interested in your advice about shooting with the 100-400 there, and will have that with me, as well. The 100-400 is great for White Sands. If you have a second body, put your 24-120 on it. I carried two bodies with me to avoid changing lenses while in the dunes. Even with almost no breeze there is powder like sand in the air that can get on the sensor. I forgot to mention on Carlsbad is that now with noise reduction programs like DxO Pure Raw 4 (my favorite) , Topaz Photo Ai, etc you can use ISO of 10000 or more and get clean files to edit.

    • @PabloGEPhoto
      @PabloGEPhoto 6 місяців тому

      Hi Alan. My settings change a lot depending the amount of light and how much depth of field I want for a given look. Typically I will shoot the RF 100-500 relatively open at f5.6 or 6.3 if I want a more “dreamy” effect with a very shallow DOF. Or I may go to f16 or even smaller if I want a bit more DOF. Since I usually shoot handheld I put camera in high speed shooting to get 4-10 photos every time I press the shutter, hoping at least one will give me focus right where I want it. Specially if there is a bit of breeze that moves flowers. For extension tubes I have used Meike for the R5 and just bought a new Meike set and for my new OM Systems OM-1 micro four thirds camera. I bought them at Amazon.

      Thanks Thomas. The “intercept mask function” can be very useful too to help refine masks. For example do Select Sky, and then Intersect with Color Range, selecting the blue of the sky and this way abound touching the clouds.

    Just traded my 5D Mark IV, EF 100-400 mm L IS II, EF 24-100mm L IS II and other older equipment for my own RF 100-500. Already have extension.tubers and looking forward to macro photos. Good luck on your channel

      Thanks Allen. I think you will like the RF100-500. Just got back yesterday from Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley and I paired this lens with the R5. Great combo with a lot of flexibility. My other camera was the OK Systems OM-1 with the 300f/4 and 1.4X for an effective reach of 840mm in a small and light package for far out subjects.

    I want to thank you for your advice. I watched your earlier version of this advice video ahead of my first visit ever to Carlsbad in March 2023. Here was my experience; First, having long ago sent my kid into the world I overlooked that the dates I chose were in the middle of Spring Break, so I was shocked at the number of people in the Visitor Center. But, with two 8:30 entry permits and two full days to explore, I did not have to be in a hurry in the Caverns. I tried a handful of flash photos, early on the first day, but felt VERY intrusive on everyone else’s experience, so changed to ambient-light-only shooting. Also flash produced flat images, so I left that behind on the second day. To facilitate ambient light shooting, I used a tripod, but mostly as a monopod (because o0f crowded trails), and used the railing or stone trail edging to brace my camera (Lumix G9 with 12-60mm lens). I shot with burst mode a lot, hoping that at least one of the images might not suffer from camera shake (works well, if you use good anti-camera shake technique). And, I shot some HDR sets, to gain dynamic range in post production. I used the shutter release 2 second timer and/or a remote release cable to minimize shake. Finally, I made use of Lightroom Classic’s new Enhance Noise Reduction feature to clean up the inevitable sensor noise. The end result is that I have a lot of sharp, low noise and pleasing images captured over two full days inside Carlsbad Caverns.

      Hi Misha. Thanks for sharing your experience and approach when photographing the Caverns. As you saw, photographing there is challenging but with modern cameras we have much better options. Add to that the great AI driven noise reduction options now available in Lightroom, Topaz Photo AI, DxO Pure Raw 3 and others. Hope you had a great time.

    Is this glitch in PureRAW 3 with version 3.8.0, build 30, 64 bit? With this - my impression of 'perfect' suffered a bit ;O) But to be fair I have rarely used it with that high ISO.

      Hi Eigil. Sorry for late response. The problem with all the AI tools is that they are image dependent. In other words, how close is our image to the ones (ten of thousands) that were used to train the AI model.

    Many thanks Pablo! This was extremely useful…. I am thinking to buy Pure Raw 3, because I also see from the trial version a very slight improvement in the demosaicing of raw files (over Lightroom). This is quite subjective, I realise. Also, the lens corrections are much better. And the colours I also like a little bit more. My question, you are using Pure Raw 2. Is this because you prefer that version - or you just did not upgrade yet? My only real concern with Pure Raw is the limitation of sharpening choices, there are some choices, but I would prefer more control in this area. Thanks for your thoughts - and happy Christmas to you 🎄

    • @PabloGEPhoto
      @PabloGEPhoto 9 місяців тому

      Hi Mike. I have moved to Pure Raw 3. In addition to the AI model available in V2 they have a new one that works a bit better. Also, you also get the option to apply sharpening corrections, but as you say, you don’t have a lot of control. The workflow is the same. Topaz Photo AI has continue to improve and they do weekly updates. Most of this fix minor bugs, but they also have been improving the various models and adding other functionality. But I still prefer the PureRaw for just removing noise. Feliz Navidad to you and your family.
