    I’ve got the same renogy batteries and a 30A mppt charger. I’m not liking my renogy inverter @ 2000w. I think I should look into the Victron multi. I cook with an infrared cooktop. I do run into diesel heater startup issues at times having to shut off everything to get 12.5V for the glow plug to ignite. I run water heater pads to keep the batteries in the warmer charging zone and it’s served it’s purpose keeping temps above 41F. The bms kicks in preventing charge but it’s vital charging in cold climates.

      I have to say as a dinghy the general stability has been great. Towed around the med on short hops no prob. If you have a massive catamaran also no prob. But lifting onto the deck is a hassle with the weight...

    I expected this video to include setup of the Victron to the Renogy batteries and was surprised when it ended without re-configuring the MultiPlus. The MultiPlus charging parameters are not the same as the Renogy batteries, if you are doing this buy the adapter to connect your laptop to the Vistron and set the charging parameters according to your batteries - Renogy batteries are not listed as supported by Victron so settings need to be adjusted. Even the charging voltage is different. Hope the original poster actually changed the parameters.

    Your assessment of Lithium vs Lead Acid is seriously wrong. Been using lead acid in my boat cruising, 440ah bank of Trojans last 6-8 years and I get thousands of cycles. Doesn't mean LIFePO aren't worth it, but the mis-information makes the rest of the video suspect.

    Hi thanks for this vid - 3D were on my shortlist because of the weight. I think I might stick with Highfield now! You mention it sits on your deck - do you lift it using a spinnaker halyard? Does that work ok? Do you lift vertically or horizontally? Many thanks

    • @duncan7875
      @duncan7875 Рік тому

      Yeah we use a stay halyard that isn't used and the spin halyard. Bow sits on the rope side of the windlass. It's quite a bit of of effort, we've got dual winches at the mast. We usually lift horizontally switching between bow and stern with one person pushing the dinghy off the side to keep it level. Then once it's at rail height I pull it forwards which lifts it a bit more and centers it. Bit of a big lug to do. So when we're short-distance cruising we just leave it in the water locked with a cable lock. If it was lighter we'd be able to just hoist it on the back overnight which would reduce the risk of it disappearing... I'd probably go for a UL290/UL310 but after this experience I'd only buy it if I saw it first! I did almot sell it to a chap who had a cat. He was able to pull it onto his davits no probs with the outboard on. Different set-up....

    Regarding your boat speed vs RPM at 4:58. I am familiar with an N42. It has the EVEN bigger engine as many seem to have. 4LH-HTE 130hp continuous 140 for a bit. It does 5kt at 1,000 RPM. Owner often uses 1,200 for those no wind days when passage making, I forget the speed but it is about 6kts. Now whether this is good for the engine is another question 🙂 This para EDITED. I wonder if your propeller is optimal? "My" boat has a maxprop 3 blade with 24 inch diameter and set to 16 inch pitch - now confirmed (possibly really 600x400mm). Original fixed pitch prop was definitely 23" dia x 17" pitch. Now this is NOT a recommendation. Maybe your apparently finer pitch prop will be better for those times when you really need it? In a howling gale and rough seas when against a lee shore. Also- The pre-purchase survey reported - "A maximum speed of 8.7 NM’s was recorded at a max 2900 rpm." "[after] the removal of the crustaceans below the waterline, the vessel recorded max revs of 3,150"

Found the specs on their website and its a Quad core unit with 512mb. Juicy. I agree with you re speed shaping etc. I was with Telstra in AUS and have switched to Optus 100GB more for $15 less, but it's not as fast even though signal strength is the same as they use the same tower. Good upgrade but can’t understand why you didn’t get 5 years or more from your leas acid/? You must have had too small a bank so you were discharging then too much, over 50% regularly. Lead acid, for instance AGM if kept to 70% deepest discharge, so not using over 30% most of the time should last you 5 years easy.

    • @ChasingMermaids
      @ChasingMermaids 2 роки тому

      Yes, somewhere between 300-500 cycles at 50% so for us living on board about 1-1.5 years unless there's a mistake and you accidentally drop them all the way down. We had I think x5 lead acid batteries, there wasn't space for many more. The daily cycles combined with the cold knocked them out too often. We had a voltage cut-off to protect, but when your heating doesn't come on in the morning a few times you know it's time to upgrade. Overall the lifetime cost of the lithium will be lower and for longer multi-day sailing passages we've found them a godsend.

Our batteries are still going strong after 3.5 years. Victron AGM. Our boat is heavy on power with electric bow thruster pulling over 600 amps, electric winches electric furling genoa, electric furling main, etc. Our previous boat still has the same batteries we installed, so now 5 years old, over 10000nm sailed, full-time l8ve aboard by us and new owners.

    Hi, thank you for the video. I have a set up with renogy DC -DC that controls solar pannels, and vehicle alternator power ..to the LiBatt .. no shore power capabilities. I'm considering replacing Renogy inverter with the victron multipluss 3k .. any reason why you have a solar controller in addition to your Renogy DC-DC? do you had any issues setting up Victron to the Renogy batteries? Thank you so much

    • @ChasingMermaids
      @ChasingMermaids 2 роки тому

      Renogy DC-DC is quite limited on total W and voltage. We do have some panels on the DC-DC which does a handy trick of topping up the starter battery every morning, but most of the charging comes from the Victron solar controller. Any reason you're not looking at the Renogy inverter of the victon one? It's about half the price and has a remote to switch on/off. The charger in the victron invertor is handy but not really essential..

      Heya, I don't have the ones on the multiplus as they were set by someone else and I don't have the data cable....but we just went with the supplier's recommended voltages. As for current, they set it a little low around 70A. From looking at the solar + the multiplus, the renogy batteries are very good at regulating their input current so it's not that important as long as you get the voltage right. The earthing settings are particular to your set-up.

    Looking at renogy producs to put on my 27ft boat. How are you finding the renogy products over the victron? I would love to go full victron but the £1000 per battery is putting me off.

    • @ChasingMermaids
      @ChasingMermaids 2 роки тому

      The renogy batteries are great. They deliver a higher discharge rate at half the cost of the victrons. There's no reason that I can see to go for the victrons. Yes you cannot see them on the victron app but you can on the renogy app. Renogy also have a better dcdc charger that includes an mppt solar charger. If your plan is to run AC power for cooking, you could avoid any victron and use a renogy invertor/charger. They now have a 3kW one at 800 quid. If not just keep your existing charger and run it through the DC/DC. You should be able to move to lithium for about 700quid for one battery or 1300 for two. You can always add a second lithium battery if one isn't enough. A handful or even a few months of cycles isn't going to make much difference. Just make sure that you makeup all the cables at the beginning so you have the same copper to run any additional batteries through. Given all the renogy products now available, I would have opted to not buy any victron. Battery review here from someone who sounds like they know what they're talking about: ua-cam.com/video/aahHWaV6Zdk/v-deo.html

    Hmmm, you probably need to read the victron manual. There is a setting called "has DC SYSTEM" so you can see exactly the charge/discharge from the dc to dc charger on the cerbo screen. Also, it's a lot easier to just leave the multiplus on, it passes through when it isn't inverting. What I really want to do is link the renogy bms to the victron canbus. Then the soc will be accurate :)

      @@ChasingMermaids I haven't managed it yet. There are some interesting discussions on the victron community pages, apparently somebody has managed it with a raspberry pi. Problem is its the j1939 protocol rather than canbus/NMEA2000 from what I have read, there are converters around, but victron will still need to read the messages correctly, which is not necessarily in their best interests given their own battery range.

      Right yeah that makes sense. Surprising for Victron they do support some 3rd party batteries (www.victronenergy.com/live/battery_compatibility:start) but notably Battleborn and Renogy aren't in there. Hello, I was very impressed with your review of the 4G router you made some time ago now, particularly the way you tested it at sea, under real offshore conditions. Have looked at the Mi Fi Netgear Hawk M1 and possibly M2 as options for their portability and battery powering method, but for a similar cost, your system, although fixed, looks to be a serious option for us for coastal sailing in the UK and over to France etc in due course. If you have a contact to the company that supplied your unit, could you share this with us? I tried calling them but so far haven’t been able to connect. Many thanks. We will be cruising down to the West Country next spring and hope to reach Plymouth like you did!

    • @SuperHighq

      We did use a similar MiFi but it wasn't very good. I generally try to go for prosumer / enterprise gear as we need a good connection for work. The issue with that MiFi is it doesn't appear to have any antennas so I'd guess that there are some signal strength compromises. You can email outdoor router and they're pretty responsive. I'm also testing a RUTX11 at the moment, slightly different as it's more of an indoor unit but there are pros/cons to each option. Upside of something mounted outside is you can sometimes get signal in some unusual/unexpexted places. Coming down past Portgual this summer we randomly got service for a few minutes ±36mn from shore on the outside of the SW TSS which was enough to get a grib file for the rest of our trip into the med as well as fire off a few whatsapp messages, golden.

    • @duncan7875
      @duncan7875 3 роки тому

      Looks pretty cool. Wouldn't survive living on our railing though. My main criteria is that there are antenna and that those antenna are wired directly to the modem chip which reduces noise/improves signal quality. The problem with MiFi's is they have inbuilt antennas that are quite small. It's whatever works for you. If you phone works in your boat everywhere you go then a MiFi will. If you're going offshore and really need range ext. antennas will do better. The router had signal when my phone didn't. My backup solution is as good as a MiFi which is to put my a spare phone in a dry bag and pull it up the mast with a halyard (make sure to have a line to pull down).

    Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. It's not about following the law - perfectly, as it's impossible - it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. If you have any questions let me know

    So 6 months has passed can you tell me how you getting on with the router and has it held up to task?

      For sure! I am actually about to review the new version. After this video they said they would send me the next one to review pro-bono so that's nice. The WiFi has been great. We left the UK 6 weeks ago and I haven't tested the 4g as we've been super busy but next week I'm going to work on setting it up with a new SIM and seeing how it fairs.. but generally in the UK it was faultless. I'll do a side by side with new and old and we'll see where we get to.

      Look forward to your new review, as we would like to install one as it looks to be the best solution for us. Will the company supply a 12 Volt power lead so that the router can be connected up to the ship’s 12 volt supply? Finally what is their “new version” compared to what you fitted originally? Is it just more stainless steel parts for corrosion resistance in harsh environments or a real upgrade of the router? Look forward to getting your help on this.

      Hi again, Sophie Tong has been helpful at Outdoor Router and checking how we wire up the router directly to the ship’s DC supply and if they can provide us with a simple twin DC cable with the appropriate connector to go into the router. Is this how you did it to power the router when away from shore power? The plug and connector they supply is an AC to DC converter by the looks of it, so ok when plugged into shore power but not when at sea..Thanks

      @@simonstell8018 There's a DC connector on the router it takes 9-48V so fine for the variance you get on most boats... They supply an optional DC connector or you can buy/reuse a connector from a 12v supply you have lying around and wire it in that way.

    Plymouths my home town and iv been shore fishing all my life, I could take you to marks which are full plastic rubbish but cannot access it by foot, just the other side of Mountbatten break water, which looks like were you landed is a mark called white patch, is an anchorage for yaghts, well we climbed back up the steep cliffs after all night fishing with six bin-liner fulls of rubbish, I'm 48 now, never seen it when I was in my teens I was about mid 20's when I first started noticing plastic being washed up, all the older generation of people I went angling with always took their rubbish home, unfortunately it's seems like my generation that couldn't be bothered and chucked it in the sea. Great videos btw 👍

      I think it was in an earlier video but we've rehomed the amazing Waffles. She didn't like sailing or water, swimming etc. and wasn't enjoying coastal/offshore passages. So instead of putting her through the trauma of the next few years of quite serious offshore sailing we decided that it would be more fair on her to find someone who was looking for a dog. In the end we rehomed her with a colleage's mum of Camilla's who had a 1yr younger cockapoo who was lonely. They're now best buddies and sleep in the same bed hugging each other in a house with a nice big garden. We're obviously very sad to not have her around as she was a joy but we had to do what was best for her in the end....we miss her a lot but it was the right decision for her.

    I noticed on the stern you have what looks like a Sat dome I assume that's an fb150 system how do you find it?? I am currently looking at purchasing a Nauticat soon either a 441 or 42 in the new year.

      We actually moved all the sat phone gear off when we bought the boat. We're planning on putting a strut supported Rutland 1200 in its place. For internet we now use a commercial grade 4G LTE router that's mounted on the Comms post and gives connection 5-15nm offshore. For longer term, isatbroadband have a plan that's much better value, alternatively wait a little longer for Mr Musk. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch. Have a small WhatsApp group of nauticat 42 owners.
