Please change the name Exclusive Brethren for Plymouth Brethren Christian Church which is a sect giving brethren a bad name. The PBCC is a limited company involving its members in many wealthy enterprises.

Brethren generally are not the only evangelical denomination who will refuse communion at the Lord's table to those who are following a lifestyle that is clearly condemned by the Word of God, the Bible

This documentary is unfair in the extreme. Although I am not PB and would never join such a legalistic cult, it is clear to me where they are coming from, assuming their motives were pure based on strict adherence to biblical truth. The narrator is making out that the Brethren were making up their own moral code and imposing it upon this man. I don't think that is necessarily what happened here. The Bible is extremely clear on what homosexuality is considered to be, which is sinful. When someone comes to Christ, they are meant to turn away from their sin and follow Jesus. That means they cannot adopt and practice a homosexual lifestyle, whatever their preferences. It's the same with fornicators, adulterers and any other sexual sinners, so gay people are not at a disadvantage here - as single people. The only sex that is permissible is inside the marital bed as a heterosexual couple between born male and born female. That is what the Bible states, without exception. The first real problem here is that his poor man was born into the Brethren, therefore his parents brought their child up as Brethren too, which didn't give this man a chance to develop his own faith in the Lord Jesus. This is the only way you can become a Christian. You can't inherit Christianity, even if brought up into the faith. If he were to turn to the Lord and be saved, he would have repented of his known sin and prayed and asked for forgiveness and then set about 'cutting off his limb (so to speak) rather than go to hell, if temptation got in the way of true repentance." That would inevitably mean some sort of conversion therapy if he was unable to control himself. It seems he asked for this therapy, and it didn't work. For any reader claiming that this would be shocking and cruel, it is no different to anyone who claims to be sexually attracted to children who claims they can't help themselves. Would you consider that cruel too - to be expected to repent of that desire - and not hurt children? No. The second real problem that it seemed wrong to me that the church threw him out. It was not his inherent sexuality that made him sinful it was any desire to act upon it or to adopt outside cultural norms to engage in sexual activity or to marry another homosexual - which would not be acceptable to any true Christian church. It seems that he was chucked out simply due to his sexuality as being inherently sinful, which seems wrong to me. Some Christians believe that homosexuality is a choice. I don't but acting upon it is. If he had committed to remain celebate he should have been allowed to stay in. It is not being homosexual that makes a gay person sinful, it is acting upon those desires. That is what the Bible stipulates. It seems the church went too far and this man was caught in a bad situation by being born into the Brethren. He must have been very hurt indeed.

Someone help me out. I've watched many documentaries trashing the Exclusive Brethren. Most include dark music and spooky b-roll video clips. But when it comes to substance, there is nothing. The EB seems to be nothing more than a quirky religious affinity group whose members support each other. The worse the media can come up with is, a) the group believes homosexuality is immoral, b) some neighbors don't want a new church in their neighborhood, c) the group is tax-savvy, and d) it is highly skeptical of the media. What am I missing here? If the group does something illegal, issue arrest warrants. Until then, leave it alone.

I'm an ex Brethern, around 25 years ago I was a member, I didn't agree with the doctrine so I left and that wasn't easy, I was being followed when I drove my car, the phone would ring and no one there, my roof was rocked, I even woke one morning with blood-red dye in my pool, I had to leave so I quit my job and left to a far off country town. I still have my faith in God, but these people are not Christian, they're a cult.

The Bretheren church is rife with child sexual abuse, domestic violence and alcoholism. Spouting a “loving religion”, they are hateful, spiteful and abusive. Apparently it’s perfectly fine to molest underaged girls, but if you use a mobile phone to text you’re going to hell. Disgusting people.

The priests etc who asked those questions are in the closet, why else would they want to know about something they're supposedly so appalled by? I have had to listen to children telling me about abuse as a teacher, it was horrible, I'd rather have never known, but, I was glad children reached out for help. I wouldn't have wanted to ask the dirty scum bag child abusers about what they did etc. I would be sick. Or attack them. So why did they want to know? So many religions cover up child abuse whilst screaming about same sex couples, abortion, women showing too much skin etc. I've read and seen countless reports of supposed elders and leaders in churches saying they're almost a saint, protesting loudly about a couple of consenting adults yet they have been convicted of child abuse. It's as though if they scream about that then it will deflect suspicion of them being pos child abusers. How a mother can choose a church or anything else over her child astonishes me. That isn't a mother. Religious groups act just like abusive partners, they cut off family and friends if you don't do exactly what they want, you can't speak to someone unless they approve. They tell you what you can and can't wear, they tell you what to read, you can't watch TV, movies or news or use the Internet because you might realise the life you're living isn't right.

That poor sweet man. I can’t understand what is wrong with these parents. I’m a garden-variety Christian. Our daughter came out to us at 13, and it was like, “Hey, mom. I think I might be gay.” My only response was.... “Ok! We love and support you, you know that, right?” “Oh, yeah! I know! I just wanted you to know!” It would never have occurred to me to do anything but love and accept and adore my baby, who is perfect exactly the way she is. My husband, of course, feels the same. That’s what parents DO. I don’t understand these people at all.

It's a cult. I worked in one of their businesses for a bit over 3 months and couldn't believe their naivity. Well I could cos I knew that would excommunicate any family who didn't agree with their ways. They employed me cos I am a Christian. While I was there I watched how they treated a young man who was only 20 and who wanted to leave them. I knew he wasn't getting any support so tried to give him as much as I could. I also tried to educate him a little on what to do in the outside world. The abuse and control was horrible to watch! They tried to lure him with buying him everything he would ever need but he stuck to his guns and left. This poor kid lost everything - family, job and friends. He's now living happily in Germany. I also worked out quite quickly that I didn't want to work for them long term as it was hard having a naive and controlling 24 yo as my manager. I also didn't want to witness more abuse! They let me go before my trial time was up. In the end it was better to be out of there. On a good note the group is currently being investigated by the Australian Taxation Office because of the way they set up their finances. They do things so they pay minimal tax! I am hoping the ATO takes them to the cleaners cos their whole financial system is suspect!
