In 2019 I moved to Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales. Since then I have been exploring the beautiful unclassified roads that cross this region. I take a camera with me so that you can discover these trails at the same time as I do.
My videos have been described as the ASMR of off-road riding - slow TV for green-laners - so sit back with some tea and "biccies" and enjoy ...
If you would like to explore any of these routes then I am happy to act as a guide. Contact me via the comments to arrange.

That looked a nice ride out. Next time your in pateley bridge, try a pie from weatherheads butchers at the bottom of the high Street, you won't regret it!
Argghh!! 😭 I would have loved a pie! Add that to my "must do" list - thanks
Thanks Stuart. Some lovely lanes in that ride. 👍
@@SteveInskip no problem - I enjoyed riding them for you 😄
Great video again, right past my house at bottom of Moor Lane. I know them all apart from Tinkler Lane, where does that go from ?
@@GrahamParker-o7m Thanks Graham 👍 - Tinkler Lane runs between Birstwith and Burnt Yates - just west of Ripley. There’s a full gpx in the description
Do you live in Hall Barn by any chance? There was a lady hanging out her washing there and I felt obliged to explain my weird behaviour to her (only the bits that involved riding back and forth past her garden 😊)
It must be 20 plus years since I’ve been to Embsay, I may have to do that route, thanks for sharing 👍
@@701Adventures I really enjoyed the trails - not challenging but very pleasant and quiet. All new to me - for some reason I never think of heading down that way. The pack horse bridge on Tinkler lane was a highlight

Cheers Stuart. Lovely little ride and thanks for the ‘Winter info’. The Kawasaki looks really smart!
Glad you liked it. The green of the bike really seemed to pop in the low sun 👍
A new one for me Stuart. Thanks for sharing the experience 👍
The pleasure was all mine - a quite ride on a sunny evening - what's not to like 😁

Lovely looking and sounding bike.

No - it's more of a twisty sprint but it's still good entertainment 👍

As you could tell my dad was a lot faster than me 😂. Also Gary Pickering is my dad’s rival he was unlucky this year cos Gary beat my dad by 200ths of a second, hope to see u at hoghton tower later in the year.
It was sad that I couldn't find you for a chat 😕 but I hope you enjoyed seeing yourself (fast or not). If I get to Hoghton Tower I'll keep an eye out for you and your dad 👍

Stuart, many thanks for giving me a shout out, it's not a bad route is it? Incidentally I got a phone call from North Yorks Council last week regarding the closed route at Blubberhouses where the gate was padlocked. They confirmed that the gate should not be locked and they are currently trying to identify who has locked the gate. I suggested I would just go and cut it off but they didn't seem to like that idea. 👍
Well the idea did come from your video so it's only fair to acknowledge that 😁 Weird that they let you know about the gate as I contacted them last year about it and got nothing! Oh well, as long as it gets opened 👍
@@uphillanddowndale The chap who called me mentioned that you had also complained about the gate but then I already knew that. Hopefully it will be resolved shortly, they’ve only had a year to deal with it. 😂
@@701Adventures 👍
Well done Stuart. Some lovely lanes there, not too technical and great scenery. That area of UK is superb. Your bike looks like it’s going well too!
Thanks - Yes, Rita behaved herself 😊👍
Hi Stuart, I have the Insta 360 X4 and have been trying a few things. In off road situations I find the stick just too flexible and have gone for a static fixing point on the screen of my nomad tower set up. Even then it gets shuck about a bit but I can see what's going on with it. On my 2 stroke I mount it next to the handlebar clamp with the clamp that came with the camera. Works pretty well. With it's size and weight its pretty vulnerable so i'm careful when I use it. I use a dji action 4 as well and that's impressive with the dji mic linked via bluetooth. Might bump into you in Leyburn at some point. Good work 👍
Thanks Robbo, I also use a handlebar mount for my regular filming - I was just exploring some alternatives. As you say the selfie-stick is too flexible for this. If you check out my other vids you’ll see that one of the great uses for the 360 is the panning shot where you place the camera at the side of the trail and you ride past. Very jealous of the X4 it’s supposed to have better quality which is where the One R can suffer. 👍
@@uphillanddowndale yes the trail side aspect is a great feature. I’m on a coast to coast ride early July so hopefully I will get some good stuff 👍🏻
👍
The first one was best but a bit bouncy, maybe use something stiffer. Also I got wet as well as bruised..😂
Sorry - it should come with a warning 😁
Hi, I think the 360 cameras, regardless of brand are a fantastic concept and are ideal for certain specific filming situations. However when compared with the ‘normal’ action camera they are miles behind in terms of one of the most basic requirements, that being image stabilisation. I’ve been tempted to purchase a 360 camera for some time now but for motorcycle use, in particular offroad motorcycle use they’re simply not quite there yet in my opinion. Having said all that, the viewing angles they offer are exciting and from those examples you demonstrated I preferred the looking ahead angle. All the best, Steve 👍
Hi Steve, I'm shocked you think that the stabilisation isn't good - its usually regarded as one of their best features because they fix on a horizon independently of the camera position. Take a look at the view looking rearward - even tho the camera and bike are waving up and down the horizon stays pretty fixed. I think the one area where the 360's do suffer is in image quality. You're cramming a 360 degree view into 5.7 Mp and then editing it down to just one angle and then zooming in .... not many pixels left at the final edit. 🤔
@@uphillanddowndale I am comparing it with for example the GoPro 12 which I use. I can turn that camera a complete 360 degrees and the horizontal plane stays level. Plus you then have the latest version of Hypersmooth which works brilliantly. 👍
@@701Adventures never seen the GP so I 'll take your word 👍

Great video! I’m new to trail riding but I think I’ve found most of the lanes on your ride here. I had a ride up fremmington and a few others on Saturday, I did consider heading over to goats but I had a feeling the water might be up 😂 I wouldn’t want to tackle it on my own! I like the view from the lower mounts on the handle bar where you can see the front wheel a bit, it give a sense on how rough the trail is. Thanks Mike
Glad you enjoyed it - if you look in the comments for all of my videos there's a map and a gpx file that you can download 👍
Ah amazing! thank you!
I like it how you didn't want to go wading in the stream 🤣
I did ask Pete if he needed help - honest. But, yeah, I’d rather stay dry 😅
Another great video Stuart - I thoroughly enjoyed that and an 'interesting' route as a gentle run-in for Rita 😳😳
Yeah - I should have known better given the amount of rain we'd had. Good to know I still bounce quite well 😁

It was better when it went all the way through to Otterburn 😢
It's a continuous erosion of our rights, isn't it.
Goats looked exciting from the front camera 😂
I was a bit of a passenger at some points!
PS - I only have 1 camera but it's a 360 recording - ie both front and back at the same time 👍
Some nice routes there, I’m not convinced I would have had the courage to go through that first river crossing, it looked a bit deep! Thanks for sharing. 👍
It was a bit deep - I should have known given the amount of rain we've had but then Paul on the XT sails thru and you think "well, if he can...." 😁

You’ll have just as much fun on that Stuart, then there’s the reliability which should be most excellent 👌
Most excellent indeed, dude 😁👍
I really like the 360 work you do Stuart. IMHO it really adds to the videos. One question though, is it difficult to edit the 'turning' point from the 360? I've often considered one, but never taken the leap. Rita is looking good, and what a thorough 'going over' she's had 👍
Hi Paul, thanks for that - the 360 is really easy to use as all of the work is done in post-production on the PC. The software does have switches to lock the pc view relative to the camera so I can point it to a forwards view and lock it. Even tho the camera bounces about and the bike turns it will stay locked on that forward view. It does require quite a high spec graphics machine to handle the files but apart from that it's easy. For the pans it's just a question of plonking the camera and tripod at the side of the road and riding past. Once it's captured everything I can sort out the pan on the pc. I've found the trickiest part is getting the pan to turn smoothly. The software has a facility to lock onto a target and follow it but I tend to control it manually. The big down-sides of the camera are 1. it's very vulnerable with two domed lenses sticking out - you have to factor-in a supply of lens protectors - and 2. on auto exposure it doesn't handle dark shadows very well - it goes quite grainy. I'm starting to play with the manual settings but it's not very practical to keep switching exposures as you ride. As you can see it's great on a bright sunny day 😁 and 3. altho it films at 5.7K when you finally select a small portion for your view and then zoom it in (eg for the forward facing bike view) you've reduced it down to about 1K quality. I bought the Insta360 ONE RS but if I were starting again I'd maybe look to the X3 as it's lighter and easier to mount on the bike 👍
@@uphillanddowndale Thanks Stuart - some really good tips there and lots of info. There seem to be a lost of X1 and X2 360's floating around on the used market - perhaps I might take a look at the X2 as they seem relatively inexpensive as a 'first try' option. I guess the 360 is like the drone - it's good, but due to the faffery, it has its place - hence I never really carry it on the monthly socials. Many thanks for the reply - very much appreciated.
A job well done happy you are back riding
