Started Seeds and Taking it Slow | Simple Homemaking | Homesteading Chores and Soil Blocking
This year on the farm we are adding a cut flower business, so with just 10 weeks until our last average frost there are lots of seeds to be started! On this slow morning I spend some quiet time preparing and getting this week's seeds done. I also get to enjoy the time spent with the kids making them breakfast using our water glassed eggs and doing our homeschool with the oldest. Lastly, I get our morning farm chores finished!
Here at Raising Haneys, I share our journey of turning our small homestead into a working farm, from the livestock to the garden, and a little bit of everything in between.

Come along as I hurry to get things done around the farm before the cold weather sets in. Since pushing off our biannual chicken coop cleaning, I had to make sure that was put as a priority and get it done! I also get our frost fabric put over our fall-planted flowers to keep them protected from the upcoming low temps. Here at Raising Haneys, I share our journey of turning our small homestead i...

Your poor pigs need shelter …be kind to them for winter please😢
Our little piggies are definitely well taken care of! They aren’t always separated but being the smallest of all our animals we like to keep them apart most of the time, especially for feedings that way they are getting plenty of food and not getting picked on by the larger animals. They do have a little shelter they are welcome to go in most of the time if they chose too. Just remember, what you’re seeing online is a small glimpse into the whole picture 😄 I appreciate your concern, there’s a lot of people who have animals that may not have their best interest in mind, so it’s always important to make sure these animals are well taken care of!
You might try to run a barbed wire along the bottom of the fence. It should discourage the goats and dogs from going under the wire. Not sure if it would detour the pigs.
I love farming.

Growing up my parents raised Angora goats. They were notorious for getting their heads stuck. They learned to buy I think the 6 by 12 inch net wire so they could get their heads in, then back out on their own. Not any help now, but in the future might try that. They seemed to learn to turn their heads after a few times. Like jumping in a trough, just goats being goats.
I really admire your interest in gardening/canning, Erica! It's an extremely rewarding interest. I've read where it is nature's anti-depressant...touching soul changes your brain chemistry. It releases serotonin in your brain--- the happiness harmony. Anyway, I'm in my happy place when I'm in my back yard tending my garden. I enjoy your videos!!

The best to have
On top of the brooder box build you a border fill it with contractor sand and scoop it out like a kitty litter box
Your side roosting bars are right there next to studs so why don't you drill holes put bolts and washers through therefore you can lift it make them hook to the top of your shed and hold them up so next time you clean it would be easier to get around the roosting bars
That's a great idea! I don't think I showed it here but our side roosting bars aren't actually connected to anything, I just lean it against the wall and being nudged against the wall and the floor it holds nice! It's held that way for over a year even with all of our chickens weight on it. So whenever I go for a full coop cleanup it's easy to take it out and bring it back in. In the future when I update those bars I will do something a little more secure that I can lift up though! :)
Aww
So cute ❤
I made a self filling waterer with a float device from Amazon and some PVC pipes
I bet that works great! We have a large IBC tote that I plan on making a self filling waterer with a float device and all that for our goats and pigs sometime soon!
Why did I never think of putting feed bags down under roosting bars? Duh!
I saw the idea a while back online and thought it was brilliant! I love how much easier it is to clean and it helps keep a barrier to protect the wood from soaking everything in.
I like this idea of being able to remove the perch easily. I would put wood chips/straw to catch the poop and then compost it later. I also got those drinking cups, I made the mistake of using them with our chickens, turkeys and ducks in one pen. The ducks would empty our 5 gal bucket everyday. Lol, our poor chickens and turkeys. Thank you for sharing! 💜
بالتوفيق إن شاء الله❤❤
Hello Good morning thanks for very nice sharing well done keep it up
It is always hard when an animal dies for no apparent reason. One of the hardest things about homesteading is having to deal with death on a fairly regular basis.
It is hard and it’s definitely not for everyone! You just have to take pride in knowing you are doing all you can even if things don’t work out.
Godbless you always sweet baby ❤❤❤❤🙏
Are you still doing the rabbits? Why not try putting the droppings on your garden?
We are, and we have plenty of the droppings 😂 I had put some directly on one bed early season and they still haven’t broken down, but I have a friend that makes a “soup” with it that I think would work really well. Since my garden was lacking so bad in nutrients I just wanted something I felt like would be quick and strong, but I’m definitely going to utilize the free fertilizer the rabbits give in the future!!
Sweet baby you have right there
You are fertilizing at a pretty light rate. I would think more along the line of a handful per 4X8 bed, but it is safer to apply a little at a time. You can also sprinkle the fertilizer on the ground and then use the noozle to water the fertilizer into the soil. You might also try to fence your garden in and let the chickens free range everywhere but the garden. No need to keep a rooster that is mean. Most people will give you roosters since they have more than they need. If you lived close by I would bring over 4 roosters and let you choose which one you wanted. Of course while you were making up your mind, I would slowly slip off and drive away.
Haha! We don’t need anymore roosters than the one!! That was my first time using the fertilizer, and I agree it was not enough. The next few times I upped it from about 2 gallons to 4-5 gallons and I saw tremendous improvement in the garden in the weeks that followed! I even started to get a few (small) jalapeños! I’ve backed off a little to not overdo it with the fertilizer but the next time I use it I’m definitely going to do what you suggested and just sprinkle the fertilizer then water, that seems much easier and quicker! Thanks for the tip!
Your garden is looking good for a second year garden. This time of year things can get tough, at least where I am at. For me broccoli is much easier to grow in the fall than in the spring. Once it gets hot they are done. I am in Texas, zone 9a and I will plant my seeds inside this week for transplanting this fall. Planting time can be pretty important depending on where you are located. In the south we really have 2 short growing seasons, in the spring and in the fall. Not sure where you are located.
I’m in the south too, north Arkansas, so I feel that long summer heat! I’m giving broccoli another shot this fall, I’m starting seeds today so hopefully I can get a little more practice in before the last frost 🤞🏼
Bro is in 2nd grade. 💀
Godbless you always 🙏

🤩 wow
I don't know if it is that you don't water enough or that you don't have enough wood chips in your garden beds, but honestly my squash beds are going crazy and I don't maintain them at all. They just grow and keep giving us new vegetables. Not much effort on my part. No fertilizers or pesticides. Holy cow, now that I watched the rest of your video I am shocked. What is going on with your peppers? I think you might be right and it may be the soil... It shouldn't be this hard for sure... Where did you get the soil from? Is your compost safe?
@@NeoKailthas I definitely don’t think watering is the issue, I’ll admit I’ve slacked off quite a bit after not seeing much return, but I definitely stayed on top of it for a while! In the next part of the video I test the soil and I think we figure out what the big issue is! That should be up in the next day or too. We got our compost from a local plant nursery and I assumed that would be good enough without amending it in any way, probably a rookie mistake 😬
@@RaisingHaneys Looking forward to it. I am glad you figured out the issue. The reason I asked about the source of the compost, is because I've seen people kill their soil for a year because the compost they used wasn't ready yet. Either way good luck with your garden!
❤❤❤
❤❤❤ ❤It's great, my friend
You have a great farm, sending you greetings from Vietnam 🇻🇳 ❤
Rose like I don’t want you
Tip just fill up one jar at a time and leave rest in the pot until it’s full , jars will stay hot and no worries about shocking the jars! Rings finger tight only!
I’ll try that next time! Thanks for the tip!
👏
Don't throw the overgrown beans out you can save the seeds to regrow :)
I totally didn’t think about it until I threw them out! I’ll definitely be saving seeds in the future!
Mmm…chicken snack 🐛
Oh yes! The chickens loved these!
Garden is coming along nicely ❤.
Thank you! I checked out your page and everything looks so wonderful! Y’all are doing a FANTASTIC job!! 😄
