What year is your 580K?
Lol
My partner ran 71Star cable tools until I bought him out.. LOL
Good idea to fishplate if you are driving pipe..did that shit for almost 50 years..had three 71 stars until buying a Portadrill in 1979..then upgraded to JEFCO 30 Ks Retired now..its a hard way to make a living!!!!
Is your rig a 71 Speedstar? Bought an old timer out in 1972 and learned drilling from him..bought a second one a few years later...finally changed to rotary and sold out six years ago..company is still active in Northern CA 100 years young!
You guys skipped the most important parts to show. What was the point to even moving forward with the video?
How deep do you usually drill ?
100 +- with cable 3_ 400 in bedrock with our rotary drill in some areas as needed, thanks
How similar is this to the wet brake system on the Ford 555b?
I have not owned a ford 555, or worked on one... sorry cant help there
Wow glade you have video because i need to do mine
Eric, glad it was helpful
Great video, I need to buy those , where can I find them ? 🤔 Thank you 😅

I just did the brakes on my 580C which is a different design. Its a dry brake shoe/ disk design. The bearings were worn on the 1/2 shafts that drives the brake hubs. To remove them I had to pull the axles and move the bull gear out of the way so basically I had to rebuild the differential with al new bearings, seals, brake linings, wheel cylinders, etc. Its allot of work. I also replaced the rear tires myself which was fun. To do this to the extent I had to you do have to know what your doing as you have to set-up the ring and pinion clearances and bearing pre-load which takes some time with a dial indicator.
Thank you for the information, that sounds worse. I have a old case 680.. i has breaks that ride on the pinion shafts, easy to replace, just pull a cover off slide steels an discs off shaft, to renew, reverse procedure with new break parts. but one problem, disks are way o small a diameter, so on a good day here is very little breaking power.
Amigo llevo muchos videos y no encuentro ninguno encuentro si los frenos de una case 580 K trabajan en seco o con aceite
Algunos me dicen q lleva un retén donde esta la flecha
Ellos corren en aceite They run in oil, I hope i got translation correct, thanks for watching I hope everyone got some help from this.
Was this in Washington state ?
North central washington
Donde podré conseguir esos discos
Sorry, don't understand, but thanks
Just brake on one side?
no, we did both sides, they are identical
@@upsidewithstephenkreider589 I'd like to think Case would make it easier to replace brakes. I've been thinking about replacing my current backhoe with a case, not new of course. Good video.

thank you for watching
Hello, 😘
Thank you for watching
I have pulled two different backhoes apart for brakes in forty years and they are terrible to work on . The kick in the ass was one didn’t actually need the discs it was the linkage was rusted under the floor board . I would soak the new discs for a day or two before I installed them. Just something I would do with transmission discs probably just old school how I was shown.
these discs are no fiber or normal break martial, there is a grainy metallic material imbedded on the disk? did not think soaking would do any good, thank you for the commend.
Thank you for your video ,..working on a 580 as well
Sure hope it helps, I could not find much information when we did this.
I did a transaxle rebuild, the easiest way is disconnected everything associated eg drive shafts etc plus wheels whilst sitting on the rear legs, then start engine lower transaxle onto the ground on a piece of wood, remove the bolts that hold the trans in place once on the ground then start it up and raise the backhoe, once your done that pull the whole tranny out and ok on it that way, easy as 🇦🇺
Is the 580D that bad.nice job.
I'm gonna find out pretty soon. 82 580d
Cuanto aceite lleva esa trasmicion
Don know it is bad, just difficult to replace brakes for sure.
Thanks for making this video,we just bought a 1995 ,480 super K , runs great, have to replace the swing & out rigger seals but other than that its in great shape. Thanks for showing us your video, what a hick in the ass this was.Come on Case you can do better than this..See Ya
Great film ,allways wondered how you drilled with cable
Thank you for your comment, glad you liked the video
I used to use a bar and chain tightener on my little rig but my uncle always used a circle jack on his 22-W but they were runing 2 3/4 X 3 3/4"' joints too! Love those little Speedstar's
Thanks for sharing, i have a bar and chain tightener, but after using it several times, joint kept coming loose, I just could not get it right, so went to using the chain fall
@@upsidewithstephenkreider589 Stephen,we never had any trouble with the bar and chain tightener . When you changed bits do you take a wet stone to the shoulders of the bit and box? We always did that every time we changed bits, put on jars etc. but if the chain fall works that is good. When tools come loose on a cabletool rig it can be a pretty bad ending . I love those little rigs. I still want to buy another one but I am now over 70 and the wife said "NO"!!!!! With another word ahead of it. I would love to have either a 20W,22W or possible a 60L that I could use to drill a couple shallow gas wells on my property. I think by 1100' here I can have a couple or three shallow gas zones.
I love these little rigs. The Speedstar is a great rig. That is a 55 isn't it Stephen?
Had a 22w made in 58. A 55 ss 3-51 keystones
Drilled 50 mile radius of Westminster Md. 30 years. 65 years old now. Retired early to help care of mother in law, alzhiemers.
The last thing I’d ever call a 580 would be complex, compared to modern machines it’s a walk in the park
I don't think I would call it complex, , but difficult to work on
@@upsidewithstephenkreider589 yeah i can agree with that
Where are you located Stephen?
im in okanogan county Washington
Is your rig the 55 or 71 Speedstar?? Thank you. Love the cable tool rigs ! Where we drilled in western PA we did not encounter formations where we were required a screen. It is amazing how different areas have to do different things toi drill a well. Great videos, please post more.
Thank you or your comment. It was actually a fun machine to run
@@upsidewithstephenkreider589 Looks like a model 55?
this one is a star, of unknown designation
It looks like a 55 Speedstar to me. The bean is a lot heavier on the 71. After watching the video again. Love the videos keep making them. I miss hanging on the line ! Thank you and have a most safe and Blessed day !@@upsidewithstephenkreider589

Charles, thanks for the comment. this is the last cable tool rig operating in our area. Air rotary drilling has pretty much replaced cable tool drilling. So much faster. I sold my rotary a while back after heart surgery. I ha not use this machine for probably 15 years, I could not resist, had many people wanting wells drilled. So I resurrected it , drilled 3 more , as shown here. have it up for sale now. Due to another recent surgery.
Helped my grandpa for years on a cable tool rig here in indiana
