An Alberta Canada based kayaker going on adventures. I have been kayaking whitewater for 25 years. The learning and development never stop. Join me on my journey to always improve myself.
Elbow Falls Rescue and boat recovery 30 M³/s. Not every run goes to plan. Lots of Lessons learned.
This happened in July and we all came away from this with lessons.
1. Scout the falls every time.
2. When the levels are up, set up safety at the ledge above the falls.
3. If there is a swim no other boats run the falls until the swimmer and their boat have been recovered.
4. Next time retrieving a boat out of the cave I would utilize people on shore above it with a rope. Or use two throw bags for a longer reach.
This is our backyard run and many times we don't scout the falls. This has definitely changed for myself and this day complacency got the better of our group.

Nice job catching that eddy
Really good bit of video for demoing the difference between quick-time and slow-time thinking. You brilliantly demonstrated acting rapidly when the moment called for it and then working methodically when you had the time. Excellent work!
Thanks, I really debated posting this. However I think it's important to share. Not always the days we expect but these things do happen and they can happen really fast.
@@gordmccoll5009so true. Thanks for sharing it.
looks good
Wow, what a great rescue in incredibly difficult conditions! Thank you for sharing this, and a big thumbs up!
Wow, that cave must be an absolute death trap in higher water Great rescue!
@@jannik19191 yeah definitely a hazard if covered. There is a feature down stream of the falls that has a big undercut in play at lower levels
Great crew and great problem solving.
Just over 12 minutes of being fixated to the screen. Thanks for posting.
Great stuff! Good points and lessons learned.
great vid!
You liked it better after moving the seat forward from the factory position? Does it come center?
The ReactR or the Indra?
@@Christgoldberg The ReactR yes it performed much better for me after the seat was moved all the way forward. What's most important is how it sits in the water, You don't want your stern sitting low in the water. . The seat is super easy to adjust to find this.
@@gordmccoll5009 yeah, sorry I was talking about the reactr. Good to know, appreciate the quick response. Loved you GC series!! Keep up the great work.
Supernova?
Ooooh yeah 👍👍👍
Great review. Its super stable but still sporty. Ive heard many people talk about this boat as a " big water" boat to which I agree but its also a super fun class 1 to 3 boat also and very stable for the beginner.
Absolutely 💯 I agree
Thanks for the update! Considering a quick trip soon.
@@bobcosterton6430 excellent 😊😊enjoy
I don't know it it was the higher flow, or any changes to the lower racecourse, but it gave me a good swim!
@@SUPBradfish oh geeez
Yeah dude! Can't wait to get on it! I'm going to do so many squirtz
Ohhhh yeah!
So stoked
Thank you, great review
Thanks
Please tell your weight and hight? Do you sit down in ninja with pleasure?
Hi, are those blade made similar to Sho-Gun ? You've mentioned that they are based on a foam. Im wondering on buying some new paddle for next season but hard to get them for testing in my country.
@@stalak The Sho-gun is a good blade and because it's not a tear drop shape you are going to find it grabs more from different angles. The Galasport Manic is geared towards slalom. The paddle provides the most power when it's in a vertical position. I think in a whitewater environment (not a slalom course) we don't always have the opportunity to get those perfect vertical strokes so I prefer a blade that can give power from multiple positions. This may be very different if you come from a slalom background but many of us don't haha. The foam core is very nice to have as I find it naturally wants to float to the surface setting you up for your roll, especially in boily chaotic water.
@@gordmccoll5009 thats all I needed. Will be testing shogun over the weekend and probably will try to get the same. Thx
But probalby will have to stick to straight shaft, as bent is outside budget
@@stalak My friend Brian owns the Sho-gun and really likes it. I've tried it out and liked it too. Found it has good catch and rolling felt really good with it. Let me know what you think.
@@stalak I am preferring the straight shaft these days. It gives you more flexibility where your hands can go and allows you to tighten your paddlers box
you’re going out on an average alberta creek/river- you taking this or the indra? no explanation. they’re both great boats yada yada… which one? thnx, great review.
Had to read this a few times. What is an average Alberta creek/river? They aren't all the same. Also what skill level are we talking about for the paddler?
@@chmith27 different boats will give you different experiences. I would feel safer pushing my abilities in the Indra vs. the ninja because of its stability. If I am running all the normal rivers I do that I know well it would depend. Different boats equal different experiences. The ninja is going to be more playful yet is also capable. You might find the ninja can do the harder stuff but also be fun on class 3. The Indra is going to be less fun on the class 3 because it's geared towards more difficult rivers.
Good call on all of it, Gord! I swam out of mine in shallow, rocky water tonight...in calm water it pops up well, but it's a bit more work in moving water for sure. It does not like shallow water at all, in my opinion...or more accurately, with my skill level. Stability, speed, comfort, and that monster-truck approach to features are its strong points.
@@brentwade9346 great boat, they all have plus and minuses
@@gordmccoll5009 Mine is much better with rolling since shifting the seat back a little and putting the seat shim in.
i agree with everything except rollability- i’d give it a 1. i’m new this yr to hardshell but can roll most any boat decently now except this m/l. You might be right about the suction, but if you just look at the height and width of the side rails and their relationship to the cockpit it makes it difficult to get the paddle relatively flat to the surface of the water because the elbow/arm is restricted quickly. i put it up next to the scorch x and reactr med and phantom and there was several inches difference. i do agree moving seat frwd will help but I don’t think that should’ve been dagger’s solution. Anyway, I appreciate your reviews. I do wonder if the indra s/m would have the same issues. cheers.
You are not alone with this I've had a few friends find the same thing. I know the Steeze can be difficult to roll as well. I've had the Indra and Steeze side by side and they are very similar. I really focus on my knee drive more in this boat than others when rolling. Definitely something paddlers should be aware of when choosing this boat. I have seen paddlers have no issue with it too. Probably different for each person's style.
would you consider doing the same for playboats?
@@jimkennedy2339 I could probably do something with playboats 🤔🤔🤔
ReactR looks like fun, Indra looks like business. ;-)
Coming from an "old school" background I like the knee placement and don't find it high at all. What I didn't like about the outfitting was the hip pads. I have no hips and the little short bumps that Zet provide for hip engagement were next to useless for me as I had to work to not fall out when upside down. I have gone back to the old school outfitting and have made my own pads by gluing and then shaping foam to the plate that Zet provides for attaching their pads. Bonus is I cut slots in the foam to access the bolts so the pads don't have to come out for moving the seat. Downside is the boat fits me and no one else ..... not my problem :) agree with the rest of your comments, especially getting the seat position right.
I found my legs were almost splayed out and straight at the same time with original thigh braces. But I have had people feel the same and then others not mind it at all. I am glad you were able to make this boat work for you because its such a great design.
I am using it since it came out. If I could only own one boat, it's the Ninja!
@@MrOceanmind it's a great boat
How much time did you have in the ReactR at this time? I'm hearing it takes a little while to really learn that boat.
It took me 2 days but I've been paddling for 25 years and can adapt quite quickly to different boats. It was super interesting and so different compared to other boats.
@@gordmccoll5009 Have you paddled an Alpacka Valkeryie? I am thinking the ReactR might be a good choice for me, as the style of paddling will be a little more similar than going back and forth to something with harder edges. Also considering a Ninja and a Flow. It's wild to hear how different it feels to experienced paddlers. I hope you can post more content about it.
@@robinlevick7246 I am not familiar with the Alpacka Valkary. When I searched a pack raft came up. If that's the case I'd have a hard time comparing. Let me Know if I can help you more in finding a boat for your style.
@@gordmccoll5009 yes, it's the packraft that is most like a kayak. It has a dropped floor which allows for secondary stability. It's definitely not a hardshell, but it's very capable.
Where did you end up running the seat in the Reactr?
What rivers are you paddling in this video? I’m planning a kayak trip to Alberta this spring but am having trouble finding extensive info on whitewater there
@@alexlax08ify There are lots of options. I highly recommend you check out paddlingmaps.com. There are lots of options within 2 hours of Calgary. Mid june is going to be your best bet for the best water. Elbow, Pipestone, upper sheep, Highwood, upper bow, cataract, Mistaya, kicking horse are on paddling maps. Also Calgary has a whitewater park called Harvies Passage. The Kanankakis is a class 2/3 that is full of play and flows all year round.
sweet graphics!
Thanks Buddy
I really want to try both of them, but i just bought a new rewind few months ago due to not finding any used ones.

I’ll be curious to hear what you think of the S/M Indra. I’ve been paddling it a bit, and it feels pretty good for me at 5’10”, 175lbs.
Me too let's find out soon shall we haha
Was hoping for a breakdown after the paddle! Im coming from an Alpacka Valkeryie, have been paddling a borrowed Rewind some. Considering this for my first creek boat.
I do a breakdown in the next episode
Just for you I'll release it today 👍👍👍
If you have any more questions about either boat I'll help you out ☺️
What section of the Fraser is this?
The pipeline and canyon Section near Mount Robson.
how is the ReactR in comparison to the Ninja?
I have an end of season review coming out on the ninja and I'll be comparing it to the other quarter slices I've paddled

Sweet videos! I'll be running the Grand in November. My first time. How many extra gopro batteries did you take? What software did you use to edit your videos?

Tried the Ninja 2 today - incredible boat!
Great video btw love it
I’d love to do this. It looks like a rush but I have only ever kayaked on a sit on top fishing one 😅
I would not recommend this until you've had adequate class 3 river skills and whitewater training.
So why not just buy a boat that has outfitting that you dont have to fix? What is this 1995? Dagger has fixed this years ago. I like pyrahna's hull shapes but there outfitting has not kept up with the rest of the field. Not to mention that you can see through the plastic now.
