My car preps are a work in progress - UK prepper

A glut of blackberries and the tomatoes went wild - August gardening UK
Переглядів 532 місяці тому
Hey, hope everyone is doing well! I neglected the tomato patch and paid the price by spending about an hour pruning it all back. Let's not talk about the plastic cover that is hanging on for dear life... Currently loving blackberry-picking season, and am out picking these every other day. We have lots of patches of blackberry brambles growing - I know it looks awful to the perfectionist-gardene...

    Exercise, wellbeing and engaging in hobbies etc is a prep in itself, alongside learning new skills/information. It can get overwhelming but theres nothing wrong with just focusing on one area at a time at your own pace. Over time you will feel great satisfaction with the effort youve put in as a whole, and theres no use in rushing it because as long as you have passion for self improvement, progress will be made :))

    I’ve heard comments that the hot plate area even above the fire doesn’t get massively hot…takes quite a time to boil a pan of water for example. How do you find it? Can you actually brown things like meat in a frying pan without having to have the fire running at full blast? Thanks.

    • @StrivingforSelfSufficiency
      @StrivingforSelfSufficiency 18 днів тому

      It's been a while since I boiled water on the stove but from memory, once the fire was roaring it took around 30 mins or so for a stove-top kettle of water to boil. I'll have to test it again next time the fire is on. I personally thought the stove top directly above the fire was roasting hot but so far I've only heated up a tin of soup (which started to boil quite quickly and I had to move it to a cooler section of the stove top). I wouldn't want to risk cooking meat without the fire running at full blast but I'm a bit particular about cooking meat. Hope that makes sense!

    Sounds like you are putting undue pressure on yourself to have it perfect and to a pro level which is then halting progress. Breathe. You are doing. This is more than most. And it will be refined to pro level-ish over time. You have an MRE in your car. That is pretty good! Please cut yourself some slack that you are trying and own your journey to becoming whatever level of prepper you want to be, whether that is interested amateur or pro. Your voice as a lady prepper is genuine and refreshing. You are aware of improvements to make so that is great. On the torch front I recommend tactical torches as they can be used for self defence more too. I also have a gadget that cuts seat belts and can shatter glass in case I need to escape/ help rescue someone else from an accident-sorry I forget what it is called.

    Sounds like you're approaching burnout to be honest. Happened to me last year. I was working full-time, caring for an elderly person, gardening, taking care of my rescue animals and trying to find the time for my partner (we don't live together). I also have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I ended up so exhausted and in so much pain I had to take six months of off work and am now only working part-time as bills still need to be paid. Make sure you ease off and take care of yourself, you don't want to end up damaging your health trying to juggle too many things. As for prepping - just do whatever's right for you. You're still way ahead of the masses so pat yourself on the back and relax. It's all ducky, as my lovely man says.

    You don't need to have a vegetable garden to be a prepper. You can just put a thick layer of mulch on top of your growing areas and that will keep your soil alive, or you can do cover crops each season. Store some water, food, weapons, electricity, and iodine tablets for radiation. There's no need to make it an entire lifestyle.

    My growing year sucked too with constant temps between 38-43 degrees c nothing wanted to grow well. Prepper burnout is real but prepping and self sufficiency are not the same thing. Having a large garden and living off the fruits of your labor does not make you any less of a prepper. After having similar struggles i decided to grown smaller amounts in grow bags as they seem to be so much easier to maintain and i still prep other items and just use my local farmers market for fresh produce that i am unable to grow.

    My view is that it isn't really a stand alone deal but just part of what we do each day and a lot of it comes down to how we do things as well. If you're doing some camping, growing some food and have some supplies stashed away then really you are still prepping in my view. It's all about balance and you have a lot on your plates already. I agree about the Chickens. We had them for years but they're hardly a good return on investment if you have to buy food and the infrastructure to keep them safe and well. They're a bit like some other things in my prepping schedule. We have the yards and stuff ready to go if I see the need but not until then.

    Prepping is not a competition, you have to enjoy life and live it to the full when you can. Just having a pantry with food in and knowing how to grow puts you a long way in front of most out there. Relax enjoy all that you are doing is preparing you for the future. All the best.

    Honestly it's perfectly natural and the majority of people who have been involved for any length of time will have gone through a similar shift. Gardens are hard work but worth it especially with young kids as you get them involved and they learn about food. Chickens I get it, we kept three with such personalities and the fresh eggs can't be beat BUT yeah things go wrong sometimes just the same as any animal including people. Ours had free reign of the garden while we were home but with a big enough run, going away for a few days was no hardship. As for your personal views, they're your views just because they are different to others I don't see why that would affect you prepping. I'm personally too right to be left and too far left to be right 🤷🏻 We've "deprepped" the garden with a view to selling (downsizing) but still regrow onions in pots and a few herbs.

    I totally get it hun I do. Balance is so important and finding your way through everything so that it works for you is the most important. I think people use the word prepping too much. They get it confused with being prepared which is much the same thing but more of an everyday level of things rather than a SHTF kinda thing. There is nothing wrong with wanting the slow life with the slow chilled balance. Having more liberal views can be difficult I'm not on either side of the fence so I know what you mean. Everyone has struggled with the gardens this year honestly. I might have had some amazing raspberries but apart from that and some triffid like cucumbers that is pretty much it honestly. You got this and you gotta be able to do you without feeling guilty about it. Take your time. Always here for you hun xox

    Prepping isn't a "hobby", it is a mindset and a way of life, by doing the fruit and veg preserving you are still prepping. Everyone's view of prepping is different, for some it is all about the BoB and wearing camo, for others collecting freeze dried foods, some, like you are growing their own foods. Prepping is just doing what you can to help the future be a little bit easier and there is no set route to follow. The tomatoes' looks like it will be a good harvest, so you are doing something right and many people are saying that this year has been rubbish for growers (and the farmers) with lots of them having failed crops. Ana has had a terrible year with her garden, so you are not alone. I think that the call on the chickens is a good idea, especially with the upcoming need to register them and the start up costs, all for a few eggs 🙂

      @@StrivingforSelfSufficiency So take heart, if experienced gardeners are struggling there must be something going on, namely the weather, it is not your fault 🙂 Also take into account that you have started your garden from scratch and this is only it's first year, so to even produce anything is a massive bonus. And finally, if you didn't have the garden to look after, you would be stuck on the internet watching videos of cats doing funny things, like me 😥😥
