Episode #1- Giant Pumpkin Patch Soil Prep
So how did the Cas and the Rod do? Did you cross pollinate those 2? How they turn out?
@jamesllewellyn7631 caspers was a dud Rodebaugh grew great till about dap 50 at 1300# it when down in the high heat
@growinggiantswithscott I had same problems with my Casper's in the heat. Gonna try the 1965 next year.
How successful do you think you could be at this over the winter without a grow tent. At this point I have grown giant pumpkins for the past 4 years without a grow tent, grow lights or a heating mat. I just ordered a smaller grow light for playing around with things over the winter.
You can still be successful its just harder to maintain a consistent air temp and humidity without the grow tent. But painters plastic is a cheap alternative that can help
So I work with other plants and we use something called STS spray to grow male flowers on a female plant this might be useful u could pollinate it with its self if the pollen is viable
@webbmoah1 no need, pumpkins produce bothe male and female flowers and can self pollinate. Also in the video I talk about how I don't want to alter the plants natural hormones. Thanks for watching
@growinggiantswithscott then you should probably just try to backcross a lot of generations back to that original clone I have no idea this video popped up in my feed I think cuz I used the word clone 🤣 trust me I'll stop watching
I never thought about cloning my squash, gourds or pumpkins before. Thank you
@lauramumma2360 thanks for watching, glad you are inspired
Is that a tiny capacitor that you also replaced next to it? If so, how to find the specs on those?
لدي مصباح يشبه هذا ،وبما أنني مبتدئ ،فلاأعرف ماهي المشكلة ،فالأضواء خافتة جدا باستثناء 5منطفئين ،الدائرة تبدو سليمة ؟
🍻
Those are not the kind of clones I'm used to seeing in a grow tent. But it sounds like you have some of the same motivations. Lots of people take cannabis clones from nice plants for breeding. Or they intentionally cause female plants to create pollen and then they create seeds that only produce female plants. I tend to grow feminized seeds because I only grow my own medicine and I don't need male plants. I've grown lots of squash, zucchini, pumpkins and gourds but not inside. My last crop in NC was devastated by squash bugs. Now in VA this past summer I grew some squash and zucchini. It never occurred to me to grow them inside. If you don't watch videos about growing cannabis indoors you probably should. Those folks have organic and living soil figured out pretty well and they've got hydroponic and synthetic liquid nutrients ironed out too.
Thanks for the watch, I have watched several videos from medical cannabis growers and alot of there views and styles work great for indoor growing. It's once things go out doors, you don't see alot of medical cannabis growers be as successful.
@growinggiantswithscott I have never tried growing cannabis outside. But it's legal here in Virginia and I have my indoor garden. I plan on putting a couple autoflower plants outside in the spring and a couple regular photo period cannabis plants outside for the summer and fall. Autoflower plants don't require the light change to trigger flowering. They come from the extreme north and their growing season is very short so they have to grow up and flower quickly, before the days are less than 12 hours long. Photo period plants need shorter days to trigger flowering. The only way to have mature plants outside in May or June is to grow autos. It's interesting how different plants are. Squash plants are hermaphrodites with male and female flowers. Cannabis can turn into hermaphrodites too, but we try to avoid that because we don't want seeds. Especially not seeds that are prone to turning into hermaphrodites. There's a way to force female cannabis plants to turn hermaphrodite, with sprays that inhibit hormones. The pollen is used for making feminized seeds that can't be male because no male chromosomes are involved. Very different from squash and pumpkins.
well done on your successes, i agree with your methodology behind not using hormone.. (not scientifically backed) i graft, airlayer and clone via cutting and have never used hormone powder.. i have used tumeric powder as disinfectant on certain cuttings to help healing without infection..
@Wooden_Spoon_BA thank you! Never heard of using turmeric before. Have to look into that.
I think you will get a nice fruit off of her and for sure some premium pollen. Looking great Scott.
@docrodebaugh that's hope anyway
I hade same problem with 3 of my Casper's plants this past year.
Yeah all genetics have some seeds that just don't take off. It happens
I'm gonna try a 1965 Casper's for 2025. See how that goes.
I'm looking to build a 3m x 2.5m frame to weigh around 1 ton. What steel thickness would you suggest for the frame?
What is the maximum width that you can build a plate
That was kinda cool, didn’t see how you calibrated it. Did you stand on it?
what is the ideal location on the plant I have a few options right now and do not now how to pick the proper one
The ideal location is on the main vine around 15-18 feet out.
That’s a beautiful pattern and clean lines. 🎃🧡🎃
So what if every single diode lights up with the multimeter like it did in the video and with the driver still functioning. Output power is reading in the correct ranges, the adjustment to dim or Brighton functions and even wired a new panel (identical) to it and it had no issues lighting up the new panel. The one that went out barely lights up about half the panel normally but multimeter all of them lights up
what gauge/thickness tubing did you use?
@@kennethrutt7986 .120
That's 11 gauge
Why do you zip tie after pollinating?
So that unwanted pollen from another plant or bee contamination. We like to control the genetics so we know what to expect the following year
Thank you first one to make it look simple
Looking good
@frankpumpkin2350 ty, you get a keeper your happy with set?
@growinggiantswithscott not really happy with either but one's ok I guess 😅
@frankpumpkin2350 understand, good luck
My 1707 is the largest footprint I've ever grown.
@@hematitehomestead9410 pretty close on mine too, just need a fruit to utilize it
@@growinggiantswithscott yeah i understand, mine is on a secondary..didn't have any viable main vine candidates, and it's highly questionable right now but hopefully it'll be ok. Good luck on yours
@hematitehomestead9410 same here, I am trying on the main but may run with a secondary
Sorry what does dap mean
@@MS-de7bb days after pollination. So how many days old it is
That 2560 on the scale looks great 👍🏼
@@dawson_acres thank you, hopefully it performs
Yes I am!! 🎃🧡🎃 going for thr biggest dang field pumpkin possible lol
🎃she is looking good!
Thank you for the video! Very cool! 🎃🧡🎃
@jesusisGod1434 thanks for watching, hope yours are doing good
I had that dip in mine last year. 🧡🎃🧡
Looking good sir
Thank you sir, yours are looking great too
Your pumpkins are looking good mine is are little bigger than a softball
Good luck, hope yours take off
Plants are looking great! Nice and big!
Thank you, looks like your plants are starting to take off
Hey Scott, any chance you could elaborate on what "deeper pollination" means?
Absolutely it just means further down the main. I like to pollinate about 20' out with 18-26 secondary vines behind the fruit
That 1707 looks real nice 👍🏼
Thanks, very happy with it for sure
Looking 👀 good 😊
Big happy plants. Excellent storm recovery on the 2560's.
Here in Indiana it was a hot one today. Some of my young leaves got cooked. It's gonna be like this all week so I may do extra afternoon watering.
have fun with mildew
I use fungicide and PM preventative products, but thank you for the comment
What is a good square foot before pollination?
300-400 minimum
Gibberish is my language, wish my 1707.5 was that nice!
Heat and hours in the patch had me whooped. Been waiting on an update from you
@growinggiantswithscott Sunday we'll get one out, same boat last weekend still trying to get caught up at dark and ran out of time
Plants are looking great. The weather is looking better for all of us. That 1707 is going to be a good one.
Moby Mike is growing in his yard and it ain’t that green lol
One thing I can say Im better than Mike at lol growing lush weeds
Positive attitude I like it.
Great looking plants. On track for very nice fruit.
Glad you didn’t have a complete loss of those plants. With the storms we have had so far, I am lucky enough my plants are small enough that they are still in their hoop houses.
Still in the race, just a small set back. You will be out of the hoops soon with warmer and hopefully dryer weather.
Nice looking patch Scott. I'm already letting some tertiary vines go a little to choose which ones to use after my wind storm battle. Thanks for the tip about using the stronger secondaries to do that on, I'll definitely consider that when deciding which ones to keep.
I have had to do it a few times over the years and it works out well, hope your plants are doing well
First time growing a Atlantic giant, when do you start burying vines?
I don't bury them, It's too humid and chance for disease. So I put some soil under the leaf nodes where a tap root will come down into the soil.
I have a few plants that are not growing in vine length, they are about the size of these here. They are growing all the normal leaves, just all bunched together unfortunately. Is there a way to fix it?
Hard to tell without seeing them, but usually, calcium nitrate and lots of water helps them to grow out of it
@@growinggiantswithscott watching a lot more of your videos have helped me describe this more. The node to node length is very short. Like 1" or less, then it keeps making another leaf
Team Scott!

Its been soooo hard to find info on pumpkin anatomy. Why do you push so hard for opposing leaves? Do you run high nitrogen early or balanced or what fertilizer schedule are you on? Awesome stuff thank you
The natural anatomy of a plant is to grow leaves and vines on both sides it creates air flow and with them alternating it allows enough room for each least to get sun light without block the others. As far as fertilizer everyone does something a little different. You must start with good amended soil. After that a ballance fertilizer to start, leaning slightly towards nitrogen. Then switch to a flower and bloom at fruit set and finish wit a ballance fertilizer slightly heavier in potassium. Good luck
