Jazz saxophone technique building

Beyond your major/minor scales and thirds, 3 great technique builders are: 1. Transcribe/memorize the complete solo of your favorite jazz saxophonist. 2. Memorize Cherokee or other Bebop tune in all keys, with metronome. 3. Utilize current great jazz exercises that speak to you….you can even write your own. Practice with metronome in all keys. The one I used today was: “Exercise 10 Enclosure Ex...

Jazz and the melodic minor scale

Jazz and the melodic minor scale. This sound is pretty basic to a more modern jazz sound, and here I just talk about some famous applications. NOTE: You need to shed this in all possible keys. It will take time, but it’s really important.

Jazz Ear-Training…one exercise
Переглядів 3 тис.3 місяці тому
The goal here is to help develop your ear with this simple exercise. Hopefully to unlock those great jazz phrases already in your brain and get them in your solos. The tune: “Have You Met Miss Jones”.
That profesores
Hi Jim, I was looking at your ear training videos and I was wondering if you are able to play a melody from a song on your sax right away after hearing it.
Yes, I can do that. Most jazz players have that ability. But my ear training exercises will increase that ability!
I just stumbled upon your UA-cam channel. And I absolutely love it! Great lessons. Thank you for putting these together and sharing them with us!
I’m so glad you like the material!
Thank you
You are welcome
Awesome! Great tips! 👍🏾
This actually helps a lot you actually hear what the song is about hearing the vocal notes and transposing to the saxophone.
You are a handsome man.
Thank you
Thanks
You’re welcome!
We had fun with this
저도 선생님의 설명에 공감 합니다 .
Great
Nica’s Dream
Bing Bong!😊👍👍👍
I love this, in jazz we use the ascending melodic minor, in classical we use regular ascending and descending melodic scale.
You are exactly right! The jazz use of melodic minor unlocks all sorts of modern sound ideas. Not just jazz…also in orchestral works by 20th century composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, and others. The MM scale is big.
This is really impressive. I saw the same technique recommend by Barney Kessel. He whistled while playing guitar.
Thank you! I’m very glad to share, after all these years!👍
Thank you! I will try this technique.
By all means! I hope it helps!
another great video!!! I love the click on beat 2 and 4!! !excellent!!!
Thank you Grant!
i love this , ...the development of melodic ear training.
Thank you Grant!
great video Jim!!!!!
Thanks Grant! Did you notice the green mug that we all got from the Thailand Embassy in Bangkok?
You guys rock 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
Thank you!
so you try to scat your lick you already know and play it..
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this, Jim. I'm just starting back up after 20+ years. Principally, long tones and interval exercises have all I've been focusing on for the past year. I appreciate the advice. Will spread the word about your channel. Best of luck. Peace :)
I’m so glad you liked this, and I hope it helps! I wish you all success!
@@jimbutler2784 Thank you. The same to you. Peace.
Nice phrasing
Thank you! Personally, the ear training helps with the phrasing.
Thanks so helpful.
I’m so glad!
Wondering what changes you were playing over at the start of the video?
“Have You Met Miss Jones”, in concert F….Sorry for not including that information!…I’ll add that to the “description” section now!
@@jimbutler2784 Many thanks - really useful
Hello Jim, from PA here. Great job, Informative and simple to understand. Showing where to play the notes is helpful also. I need lots of jazz theory made easy as I play mostly by ear and need it simple to understand. Jazz is difficult. I listen to alot of it pretty regularly. Started sax about 3 yrs ago. Been practicing off & on in-between hectic wrk schedules and haven't been getting the time in as much as would like tho. I am working on perfecting my embouchure but I am dealing w cheap equipment and very difficult to play and control and sounds like heap of junk but I am glad to at least own one. I love playing and just improving. I like all types of Jazz but comfortable playing and jumping right in on some acid jazz funk melodies. Glad to kno ya. Look forward to checking out some of your other videos.🎵🎷
So glad you decided to keep music in your hectic life! It’s a great thing. I put up 3 new videos today, where I focus specifically on intervals in jazz…anyway, I hope this all adds to your enjoyment of music!
great video. definitely trying it out
I’m very glad you enjoyed it!
What an excellent idea, Jim. Sounds like fun. I definitely give it a try, doo be dooby ba ba do ba 😊
Thank you very much for enjoying! Hope it adds to your jazz!
Wow! Where do you ever find so many beautiful phrases?❤
Tá perfeito. Parabéns!
Muito obrigado 😊
Nice
Thanks😊
Can listen so many times, gorgeous solos, good to the last note!
Gentle,tender and lovely❤
This is one of my favorites still!
Love this, so much to hear, places to soar to, repeats and never repeating...
Thank you!
As always....sounding great!
Thanks Chet! Great to hear from you!

@@chets-a-song-a-day6053you too, my friend!

Hey Grant! Nice to get your note!
Still one of my favorite versions😊
love it 🎹🎷
I’m very glad you enjoyed!
Well done, Jim 👏
Thank you!
Fantastic 👏🏼
Thank you!
nice chops
horn players could do something useful when they're not playing, like tidy up or get coffee for the band. just a thought. nice arrangement.
Well, before the tune started I made sure everyone’s glass was filled. Once in place during the song, I could not leave that spot without climbing over Jeff’s shoulders and the couch! I take it you are not a horn player?
a favorite of mine from this cd!
I’m glad you enjoy it!
Fabulous - great job by all Jim! Well done!
Thanks for listening
The entire CD is terrific! The compositions are brilliant and original, the band is tight, the vocalists are amazing, and Jim will take you to the stars and back again. Shipping costs to the US are a bit extreme, but worth every yen!
Thank you!
Nice! ❤❤
Great....not sure if your sidemen make you sound good, or if you make them sound good - - nah you are all so great. Well done all!
Thank you kindly!
Fabulous! You two are beyond "AWESOME"!
Hey Chet! Thank you for your nice words!
Very nice indeed!!
Thank you!🙇
