As a CareFree Runner, I lace up my running shoes not to break records but to break free from the rigid norms of traditional training. I'm not here to meticulously track every step or obsess over split times - I'm all about the joy of the run and the freedom it brings. There are no rigid schedules, no strict regimens-just the pure, unfiltered joy of hitting the trails or even some pavement, at times.
You'll be the first to know if I stumble upon a new running technique that adds a skip to my step. If I find a nifty product that helps with my running, I'll share an honest review with you.
This channel is about embracing the run for what it is-an adventure. So, whether you're a seasoned runner or just lacing up your shoes for the first time, come along as we enjoy the running world together. Let's uncover the joy of running without the rulebook!

7 Ultras, 1 Bear, and a Year That Changed Everything…
In 2024, I set out to run seven ultramarathons, but life had other plans. From encountering a mama bear and her three little cubs on the trail to experiencing the highs of earning my first 100-mile belt buckle-and the lows of losing my grandfather-this year was nothing short of transformative.
In this video, you'll see the thrills of running iconic races like the Traprock 50K, the Midstate Massive 100, and the JFK 50 Mile.
This isn’t just a story about running-it’s a story about resilience, growth, and finding strength in the unexpected. Whether you’re an ultrarunner or just looking for inspiration, this is a journey you won’t want to miss.
I’ll also share my plans for 2025, including my goal to run multiple 100-mile races and tackle even bigger challenges on the trails.

Helluva year Igor. Looking forward to seeing what you can do in 2025!
Thanks, Hopefully I’ll get into Vermont 100 so that would be fun to do, so we’ll see what 2025 has in store for me!
Great storytelling.
@@Shevock Thank You! I appreciate that!
Great video, Igor! The storytelling is getting better and better. Congratulations to everyone.
Thank you! I really appreciate that! It’s really good when there are other participants besides myself in the video. Need to find others to tell their stories! Interested?
So wild.
Too wild!!
Such a great video! It makes me feel like I am running alongside the 5 of you.
That's my friend Brian Patrick Mulligan in the beginning!!
That’s Him! And he’s In the end too making a triumphant finish!!
This was a wonderful story Igor! Well done on the creation, and the race. Everyone did an amazing job!
Thanks Brian!!
Awesome video Igor and congrats to all of you! Really loved this one. 👍🏼
@@RhodySeth thanks Seth!! My most historic race so far!!
Beware the spicy salami!!!
You don’t have to tell me twice! But it was so darn good for at least that moment!
Great video! Im hoping to make this my first ultra as an MA local. Thank you for sharing your journey
This is a great Ultra Race- just make sure you have plenty of battery for your gps watch, cell phone, and headlamps. A lot of people were getting lost on this course! Also, they host a recon run so I would go to that and since you live in MA I would recon the course on your own so that you’re familiar with it. This was a fund adventure!
Congrats on your buckle. I was looking and it seems like you could run Cairo Illinois to Blytheville Ak to hit 5 states in 100miles.
Thank You! Is Cairo Illinois to Blytheville a 100 mile race?
@ not that I’m aware of, but you can always make it one!
@ sounds good! I may do that one day!
Awesome work Igor! You had some good crew. Great summation of the race!
Thanks! It was a fun race and the crew was awesome!
White people be like: Frost who?
I don’t know how wet it’s been down there, but if it’s anything like New England, the trail will be pretty dry. So traction may not be an issue. I’d probably opt for a road shoe just because I don’t like running in heavy trail shoes on pavement.
I think that you maybe right. So I think that I may just suck it up and run the 11 miles of Appalachian trail in road shoes.
always road shoes, regardless of terrain. trail shoes are a gimmick and they’re heavy as bricks
You don’t think that trail shoes give a bit more traction? I tend to slide a bit on rocks in road shoes when running on trails.
Would you recommend swallowing the ring for a more accurate temperature reading? Maybe with the charger too if overnight?
I Cannot condone this type of behavior, although this sounds like a joke but just in case please do not swallow any rings!!!
Typical democratic weather
I say you should have to complete it before he can run for president
I agree Every Presidential candidate should complete this before running for President!
@DavidGoggins 😂
Very nice Gear
Thanks!
Damn i thought they're a little more durable.
@@lilcrisjan Folks tell me that the ALTRA’S are getting worse. My latest pair, the front toe guard started separating after about 400 miles, so maybe they’re right.
H Yeah! F these dumm-s tall foam shoes!
Congrats! 👍
@@Vlxne._.Mica20 Thank You!!
pros and cons?
Haha, whoops!
Does the Adv Skin 12 fit an iPhone 15 pro max in the front ?
It should, it fits my iPhone 14 Pro Max in the front zip up pocket with room for more stuff.
I am hardly over 9 and 3/4 inches so I’m between the 40 and the 41 (10inches). Which would fit better?? I ordered a 42 and it was too large so returned but not sure which size would be better. My foot is in between 9 3/4 inches and 10 inches
You should go with 41 or even 40-but that may be too tight. Remember they are rubber so they do stretch after a few times wearing them. There should be no spaces between your toes and the shoe.
neopentyl glikolu!
NATURE SLIDE!!!
I'm on my 2nd Adv Skin 12 after my bastard cats chewed the straps on the first one. Works well but I made the mistake of getting the larger one - now the water bottles sneak deeper into the depths of their tubes as I run. Otherwise I'm very happy. Been meaning to put together another load out video on it but haven't gotten around to it.
So far the vest is great-hopefully it holds up and I’ll need all the storage capacity that I can get for Midstate Massive that I’m running in October!! Now that I made this video I can finally get rid of the advance skin 5.
@@carefreerunning good luck at Midstate! Did you end up running Anchor Down?
@RhodySeth no I had a family emergency
@@carefreerunning hope everything's okay!
@RhodySeth everything is good-my grandfather passed expectingly
Thanks
You’re welcome!
The toe box is so shallow in the 6. My toes went numb. It's a terrible shoe. Goes against everything Altra. Awful shoe
Oh no, sorry to hear that! They seem alright for my toes- not numb yet. Maybe the shoes you bought are too small and snug against your toes?
@@carefreerunning I had the 5s. I've seen a lot of people commenting on the shallow toe box. It's just not Altra. Gutted it didn't work for me because everything else is bang on
@@pete801 maybe with all the negative reviews they’ll make a better shoe with the 7
Great video, really inspiring content! I’ve recently uploaded a few new videos on my channel, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Your support would mean a lot!🦾🦾
Cotton socks? 😄
I was just making a comment on Kyle Running the backyard ultra in Hanes Cotton socks!! It worked out for him- he did like 52 miles with this being his longest run ever.
@@carefreerunning the touch, the feel of cotton. The fabric of our runs!
how do they work for everyday use in the city/parks too? like for a barefoot transition
I mean I use them for trail running only and I like to use TOPO ST-4s for road running. However, I do have a friend that uses these on roads and loves it, but the TOPO ST-4 stack height is lower so there’s less cushioning but better for transitioning to barefeet
I always wanted to do one of those but I don't think this old body would care for VanLife too much.
I don’t know, I think Van life may be right up your alley!!!!
Hell yeah, what a great adventure you captured for us!
You got to get the RAGNAR Yearbook from Eric!! Unless you have already done that.
Meh. Topo Athletic has proven to many to be a better shoe, especially with regards to durability.
I run in TOPO Athletic’s when I run on roads, but I haven’t used their shoes for trails. Do you know if they make 0 drop trail shoes?
@@carefreerunning They do indeed, it’s called the Pursuit. After experiencing and being unsatisfied with Altra’s lack of durability in the last few years, I bought the Pursuits and haven’t looked back. “Darwin onthetrail” did a great video here on youtube called “the Atra Lone Peak KILLER”. Good review there.
@DookeyRidr thanks for the tip. I may switch over. It’s hard to switch when I’m so used to one type of shoe.
Can u feel vibration when you turn them up.
It depends on the volume. If the volume is high then yes! If your music has a strong bass then possibly. I don’t listen to music but podcasts and books and these are perfect for that.
I tested them out at Best Buy I’m tired of having one ear bud in at work I feel like I’m harming my ears so I got these and I love em I work in construction so it works very very well
Great race report Igor. That bear sighting sounds terrifying and amazing. I hear you on the hill training - definitely some thing I also need to work on. Tough living here in the ocean state. Traprock is a race. I’ve always wanted to do but just never have.
The bear sighting was a bit trippy, nothing like a scare during a race to keep me on my toes. I got to get out on more mountainous terrain. It’s a nice little trail Race! You should try it out one of these days.
God is good
I might have to stop by!
You definitely should!! There will be a lot more people than last year!
Keep doing you bro, this is awesome. Bought myself a nice guitar this weekend, we gotta be happy about our purchases at the end of the day lol
Heck yeah! You Keep doing it too!!
I used to work in the factories that build campers... they are absolute trash heaps waiting to fall apart. The entire rv industry is a joke.
Yeah, I know but they’re fun!
I was always jealous of people that can just go running everyday instead of working a job
Yeah me too! Maybe one day I’ll be one of those people 🤞
@@carefreerunningGood stuff lol. Mfs hating they gotta focus on the 5-9 not the 9-5
This is some real NPC screaming into the void stuff
Heck Yeah!!
You had to comment twice. You’re the real NPC watching youtube shorts not doing shit 😹😹
Ok
Congrats
Thanks!
Looking forward to what you put together for Ragnar!
A Trip to Valhalla and Back!!!
Now that is AWESOME. Jealous...
Jealous? I almost got mauled 😂 just joking they wanted me to ride them but I declined, you know with the race and all 😊
