Benjamin Britten - Sinfonia da Requiem: Sir Antonio Pappano conducting the LSO at the Proms in 2001
A real serendipity find as this was thought to be lost. A trenchant performance on one of the hottest days of the year in 2001.

Actually it sounds great on youtube. Better than many of the Karajans uploads .
No this is from Moscow RTV Grand Symphony
Sorry to disappoint, but this really was the LSO and Abbado in 1975.
Just unbelievable orchestra playing and music making. Out of another time. The energies relished here are almost frightening. Probabably what Tchaikovsky felt on his soul when he wrote the piece. The performance is boiling with energy but always transparent and colorful. Can only wish I had been there!
romantic melody

Un'interpretazione meravigliosa, rimpiango il Maestro Claudio Abbado, uno dei piu grandi direttori d'ogni tempo.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is performing this next week 4th Dec. Looking forward to hearing it live.
The concert also celebrated Stokowski's 90th birthday as well as repeating the exact same programme marking his first appearance with the LSO in 1912. It was a long programme by today's standards, featuring Wagner's "Mastersingers" Overture, Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" and the Glazunov Violin Concerto in the first half, with the Brahms 1st Symphony coming after the interval. Tchaikovsky's "Marche Slave" was also on the 1912 programme so Stokowski kept that as an encore. When tickets went on sale, the concert was sold out on the first day of booking. However, as luck would have it, the Royal Albert Hall was available the following evening, so the whole concert was repeated. As stated above, Decca 'Phase Four' recorded the second concert and not only that, Stokowski added several more encores. These were duly recorded and came out on an 'encores' LP. Extraordinarily, for a 90-year-old, Stokowski remained standing throughout both programmes. He appeared with the LSO a few more times, the last occasion being on 10 February 1974 in an all-Beethoven concert featuring the "Coriolan" Overture, the 8th Symphony and the "Eroica." Tragically, the BBC decided not to record or broadcast the concert, which was a pity, as he proved to be a first-class Beethoven conductor and received excellent reviews.
Impressive performance of a piece I almost never see anyone program. It's a pity! It's so good!
Fellow saxophonists, here you go: 16:34 and 27:30
Since the fanatically picky Szell liked this piece , why would I care what a " critic" sez ? Did Robert Simpson diss it ?
Previn at the top of of the Classical world and loving every minute of it. Walton was a kindred spirit; tried to not let work interfere with life. This is a terrific version of this outstanding Symphony. Not much more than a decade old, iirc, when this was recorded. I have cherished my Szell recording of this but the Previn might move into first place.Gotta hear his finale first.
Gracias magnifico
Gracias por esta interpretacion es oro puro
Cameron giving a superlative performance
Love this 1874 version! Wonderful performance! CD information please. Very happy it is here--thank you!
Gran interpretacion del maestro
I keep returning to this stellar performance of RVW's symphonic masterpiece that he dedicated to Jean Sibelius and was first performed and conducted by him in London in 1943 during the blitz - and that makes it all the more poignant ... Thanks v much for uploading
Unbelievable. I spontaneously started to sob after reading that. I can't imagine such beauty thrust against such darkness. Vaughan Williams was a spiritual giant that used music as his conduit to the World. I always feel blessed when I hear him, and I'm not religious.
A wonderful performance by Abbado and the LSO - even better than their studio recording imho - and utterly, utterly brutal at the climax by resisting any accelerando, but staying in tempo - exactly as written ✅✅✅
MTT is a great Stravinskian. Herbert von K could learn a thing or two from him about tempi and pacing.
Music by Igor Stravinsky; Makeup artist, Leopold Stokowski.
There is only one Gatti and we love him...he is a most Divine Mahler interpreter !💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Previn also led the BSO in this piece at Tanglewood in an all-American program the year before. The program included Gould's Fall River Legend, Copland's Clarinet Concerto, this piece and Gershwin 's Rhapsody in Blue.

Mind blowing music, mind blowing playing. On a totally other level.
Pace of the 1st movement astonishing, bravura. Crisp and clear playing. I'm coming back if I have to take off midplay.
empfindlich !
I. 0:05 to 14:11 II. 14:48 to 25:31 III. 26:00 to 31:52 IV. 32:27 to 51:57
I never thought I'd hear Monostratos as Waldemar! And Tove giving a masterclass in the art of the vocal wobble. Extraordinary. The orchestra, however, is truly excellent (seriously).
Hard to believe this was forty years ago.
Splendid live performance. Davis 'judges' the tempi perfectly and gets wonderfully rounded sounds from the brass section.
Andre Previn at the peak of his powers a grade A performance from one of the greatest conductors of all time
Wherever Previn went, the orchestra was improved. Whether it was the LSO, the PSO or the LAP, Previn brought out the best. Here in Pittsburgh, during Previn's tenure more of the top artists were attracted to come here to play with Previn. He was the best and put Pittsburgh on the map..
I believe this to be the most intense and "believed in" of the CK Sevenths we have available. The most "convincing" of our sense that these tempi might just be the way the composer "heard" this music in his head.
Who is the saxophonist? Magnificent recording.
Uncharacteristically lucid for Goodall.
Superbly dense sound from the Groot, nuanced by phrasing of exceptional lucidity. Stunning performance.
What a fabulous performance. Thanks for the upload.
Fantastic, BRAVOOO!!! MANY MANY years ago, when I was just a student, I bought the Deutsche Grammophon vinyl recording of this wonderful ballet with the same artists (Berganza, Davies, Shirley-Kirk, LSO and Abbado). I don´t remember it was a live recording and after hearing this version detecting a small defect in the trumpet and some coughing in the audience, I think it is not the same DG vinyl version. But I find incredible the similarities in performance and recording itself, among the studio and the live versions. It tells a lot to me about how fine was Abbado as conductor, his musical sensitivity and his communication with the musicians. Great experience. Thank you very much.
Such a wonderful concerto. Heart felt. Heart written. Heart played. Heart performance. ❤❤❤. The violin soars and sings. Andre Previn rest in piece and may your music Bless Our Ears for Centuries to Come. The scoring is rather sparse through out making punctuation points. Almost like Violin with orchestra obligato. An interesting approach. Ann Sophie Mutter is an remarkable virtuoso. She got his message and performance responds loud and clear ❤❤. I listen captivated.
I love how the end of the 1st movement bursts into a brief, Stravinsky-like attack, then just leaves you hanging... ...absolute magic.
Hard to believe this was criticised when it was premiered; surely something many critics later regretted after hearing it more than once. I hate how Walton is dismissed in comparison to his 20th Century peers, he was great. As a kid I saw Battle of Britain and the music during the finale blew my tiny mind; I KNEW, somehow, that whoever had scored this ancient movie wasn't the composer they used in the actual battle, and when I saw the LP in a second hand shop the first thing I noticed was, "Includes 'Battle in the Air" by William Walton. I bought the LP, of course, and wore down that one track until it was almost impossible to play; thus began my love of Walton.
One of my top favorite 20 th Century composers. Such a d intelligent man , had an extraordinary intellect but made piles of money from his music. Couldn't have happened to a cooler. Find the story about the South American (?) second wife and their fantastic tropical gardens.
I was at that concert: great performance.
why is it transposed
Based on his writings - it took him years to get this difficult symphony right - I think he nailed it with this one, so clear and pure!
I was lucky - twice! In Amsterdam in 1989.
Far from impeccable in terms of accuracy and sonics but this performance captures the spirit of this marvellous and underrated piece like no other I’ve heard,
Two motnhs after this performance, President Kennedy announced the presence of nuclear weapons in Cuba and put American forces on alert.
Wow - stunning playing from everyone. If this is Roy Jowitt on clarinet it's exceptional playing. So different from the players of today who don't find the levels of nuance he displays here. Thanks for this link.
Cor de Groot was a great pianist, but unjustly underrated....
