Porsche 356SC Engine Rebuild - Episode 3
Due to the BABVVO and TEBBVO laws, all petrol cars will unfortunately soon be banned from public streets in the EU, CH USA and Scandinavia :-( In Germany, the Green People's Party has given the order to shorten the fuel supply from 2025 by reducing all conventional gas stations to just one state-run central gas station per city or county Now they even want to slow down all gas pumps by 20 liters per minute to 2 liters per minute... From 2027, some car spare parts will also be banned in the EU... such as exhaust systems, turbochargers and even some engine and gearbox oils. .. California and New York will do the same from 2027... So no more investing in petrol cars... They even created a new type of crime here called emissions and smoke crime . "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbotsverordnung" BABVVO in Germany and HESCHLAVVO in Switzerland and SMORVERBIDDEN in Sweden.
Truth was the Alpine and Tiger were built on a Commer Cob floor pan and bulkhead which went out of production with the rest of the Hillman Minx Audax range mid 1967
The X brace was added to the Alpine and Tiger the floor pan which was actually same as the pressingasc Commer Cob van and Hillman Husky. From the factory floor sill to rear wing seam was lead filled.
I remember these first being available on the British market. We knew a salesman at the local Rootes garage in Norwich who allowed us into the showroom one lunchtime. The bonnet (hood) was open and we looked at the Ford power plant and were impressed but then we looked at the steering and counted five universal joints to connect the steering column to the wheels. Yea Gods what happens with wear! We could not believe it! We were now out of our time window and from then until the late nineties when my friend died we laughed at the steering. It worked but it was amazing!
Make sure that you install the rear brake line that goes over the transmission before you install the transmission, also the wiring harness.
@@50zoomie thanks, great advice. I've been a bit bogged down with the front suspension, so hopefully I'll get to the rear soon.
Almost any interior color can be used with Light Ivory. I like the dark green and dark blue. I reassembled my 65 C also so know what you are up to. I had a fair number of missing pieces also. A 3 North Caolina owner C.
There are some differences between Reutter bodied cars and Karmann bodied cars just so you know.
Thanks for doing these videos. Did you need to do an machine shop work on the 356 motor and if so did you use someone in NC?
On the '65 356 I used Mountain Machine & Performance here in Asheville. They do great work, as long as you're okay with complete disarray in the shop! The engine in the '64 is already rebuilt, so I'll probably just use them to refresh the rusty flywheel.
I didn't need to do anything with the motor ....it turned out to be fully rebuilt, just like the transmission. One of those rare moments in the classic car world where things turned out better than expected.
Thanks for doing these videos. Did you need to do an machine shop work on the 356 motor and if so did you use someone in NC?
Great insight into a unique front end set up. Love seeing it come together.
awesome video, sounds to me like you did enjoy figuring it out if not the actual installation . You as always are an artist, my car will never be on this scale of perfection.
Yep, true that I liked figuring it out. And, I learned enough from the first torsion tube that the second will be a lot easier. But, after that, I don't really want to do another!
Very useful thanks. Ps you could probably have drilled out your existing jets to the new size
Yeah, good point.
Did you ever figure out the issue?
2 things. The throttle linkage in front of the engine was worn to the point where the throttle was only opening 75%. And, more importantly, a venturi was installed upside down. In both cases, no amount of adjustment was going to fix the problem!
@@mvpclassicrides1834 dang those are some gremlins right there! Did you stick with the bigger jetting after you fixed the problem or go back down to where you first started?
@@bryand3276 stuck with the larger jetting. It ran great when I sold it. As usual, I regret doing that!
Had my Tiger 47 years. Last winter ter went to the 15 inch wheels plus Jegs Wilwood brakes. Big difference.
What changed? Thanks!
Your are an artist
🤷 Promo-SM
Awesome, take the good when can get it.
You got to do shinny I mean come on man
Wow what luck
Cool car. Most young people would probably not know what it is if they saw it on the road as Sunbeam never lasted as a brand. Different era. Better to get one now before the prices creep up too much.
Funny looking, sort of beautiful in her own way ... looks like a Jetsons car.
Or a Karmann Ghia morphing into a Type E
@@Individuo80 I like the way you think.
Thanks for the history lesson ... I love the rear end of the Tiger.
Looks like a Tr4
Two things…the pinch welds under the doors look like they sag in the middle, does yours? Also i have a Chrysler emblem on the front quarter panel. Any idea why?
I haven't noticed a sag, but I'll take a look when I'm back at the shop. Yes, Chrysler bought the Rootes Group, which pretty well doomed the Tiger (Since Chrysler didn't have a V8 that would fit and didn't want to sell a car with a Ford engine). I'm assuming you have a later Series 2 car with a 289 engine. They're worth more than the earlier cars. Watch my video with the picture of Lord Rootes on the opening screen for the whole history.
@@mvpclassicrides1834 yup 289 with a manual thanks for the info
The last batch of Tigers, Mk2`s got the Chrysler emblem because Chrysler bought the Sunbeam company and wanted their emblem on the car, the decision was then taken to stop production as Chrysler didn't have an engine that would easily fit and they wouldn't use Ford engines in a Chrysler made car.
The Tiger was a real mongrel. The body/chassis unit was made in Scotland by Pressed Steel and a trimmed Alpine shell was delivered to Jensen Motors in Birmingham, who also assembled Austin Healey 3000s on the next production line. Jensen took an asbestos pattern and put it over the bulkhead/transmission tunnel and cut out around it with an oxy-acetylene torch. They then welded in a new larger pressing with an oxy torch .... a good point for rusting. Holes were burned inthe X-frame for the exhausts to pass through and the battery box cut out (the r/h exhaust would have passed through it), the panhard rod tower was welded to the chassis leg and a bracket onto the axle. The front crossmember had steering rack mounts welded to it and the wheel arch was clubbed with a wooden mallet until the dynamo had clearance. Add the poverty spec 260 and BW gearbox, uprated rear axle, rack and pinion with bent trackrods and reversed uprights, some additional wiring and a different tacho, speedo and ampmeter. Touch in the paintwork and add a battery tray and electric fuel pump in the boot, some tags and the job was complete. No body stiffening or better brakes. A real rush job, somewhat Heath Robinson. The car was much better than this sounds with good performance and lovely light steering. The rear axle location wasn't the best and after a fast run the brakes would catch on fire and feel as if a brick had been placed under the pedal! I loved mine but it was a UK car and the rust worms had devoured large chunks of it. I fitted a 289 and box from a crashed TVR. That really highlighted the bad brakes. Ford Capri vented discs and Princess 4pot calipers sorted that problem. I cried when I had to sell it to fund my career back in 1977.
Thanks, John. Great comments!
Thanks for this video. It's really helpful.
Thanks, Bill!
Nice video. The STOC had engine, gearbox, axle and key numbers for my car. The eng number is on a little ledge on the block, just in front of the left hand head. I think you can read it with the head on.
My brother has one. It has original cobra wheels and and some other mods. It is exciting. Fun car. He solved the hot firewall problem.
Well that’s annoying
Cheers! good luck
Alpha’s definitely the prettiest! Love the color and who doesn’t like the smell of a shoe store?
Do you have any project Cars for sale ?
The E Type you see in the videos could be considered a project car. It needs some interior work and some minor rust repair underneath the car in the rear apron. It's fresh off an engine rebuild....details on www.mpvclassicrides.com
Sounds great
Seems like that was easier than the one 40 years ago in another little red car
Easier and harder. Easier with the right jack (as opposed to the tiny one we used on the Beetle with the engine balanced on top). Harder because it's a tighter fit in the Porsche....for the engine and for access to the bolts.
The easiest of all was the 1950 Beetle....the body was off the pan!
Very cool sir nothing like a Buick
Awesome video I learned a lot
