Rotax Temperature Gauges - why don't my EGTs read the same? A tale of thermocouples and thermistors
In this video I describe the operating principles of temperature sensors based on thermocouples and thermistors (thermal resistors). The video is based around instrumentation used in the Rotax 532 and 582 aircraft engines, but the principles are the same for lots of other temperature sensing applications.
Thermocouples work by generating a voltage which varies at a predictable rate as the senor is heated. For K-type thermocouples, like those in the video, the output is 41µV/°C, i.e. for every degree of temperature detected, the thermocouple will produce 41µV. When connecting thermocouples you should ensure that you get the polarity correct, because the sensor has a positive and a negative side. When extending thermocouple wires you should use special thermocouple extension wire. Thermistors usually don't care what wire you use or which way round you connect them.
You should NEVER connect your EGT gauge to a 12V supply!
In the video I mention the MGL Blaze EMS-2 engine monitor. This device is able to accept inputs from up to four thermocouples and four analogue sensors like fuel level senders or thermistors. This capability can be expanded by connecting the instrument to a separate sensor input module.
I should probably issue a health warning about using hot things in experiments - if you're going to copy my experiments then you should take precautions to make sure you don't burn yourself or get hot stuff in your eyes.

This is a version of my previous Rotax 582 unboxing video made for the LAA video competition. The documentation I mention in the video is available by going to www.flyrotax.com The music in the video is from www.epidemicsound.com and is licensed under a personal plan support.epidemicsound.com/s/article/what-is-the-personal-plan

This is an unboxing video of a new Rotax 582 two stroke aero engine. The engine was purchased from www.cfsaero.com. The part number of the engine is 582-99-BASE. In the video I mention that that you can download all the Rotax manuals and other documentation from www.flyrotax.com.
Flying Vlog #1

Some flying antics around mid Wales in a Cessna 172. in the process we tested three different cameras - a Panasonic G7, a DJI Osmo and an iPhone7 to see how good they were for recording flying videos.

A flight in a Cessna 172 from Welshpool Airport via Ironbridge, Telford, Shrewsbury, Chirk and Oswestry.
Did you find a water temperature sensor that was thermocouple type?
hello there, what was your current setting at 12v??
Good question, I’d need to go back and check. It’s a while since I did this experiment
make sure the cold end doesn't get warm by restricted air flow or from sticking the probe too far into the manifold. The dial gauges are calibrated at 75 degrees, if the end where the wire comes in is too hot the readings will be wrong. can someone tell me what kind of EGT readings they get on a 503 for a given RPM?
Hi do you have a video showing how to actually connect the wires? Which color wires go where ? Thanks
I don’t I’m afraid
@@iantoguy2613 ok thanks
How did this gauge work out in the end? Was it a worthwhile purchase. Thanks
U can get them from a sled for a grand on ebay
I'd like 1 engine, how much is it?
we need complete engine
Fantasti epic intro !!!!!! What would it be like for the rotax 912i ??? ;-)
what u want do with this engine?
Fit it to my CFM Streak Shadow
@@iantoguy2613 what that? im not understand. If i want to make heli homemade,so this engine can support that? how much a price and how much horse power?
Both my regular viewers! Ha! Thanks for the taco info!
Nice unboxing
How much it cost you?
£5,000
@@iantoguy2613 how many hours I have to change oil gearbox and how many ML?
After the most ludicrously ostentatious video opening sequence in history (which I could only tolerate for 65 seconds) what an utter disappointment that there's a Rotax 582 inside! The cardboard box manufacturer produces a better quality product! What a pity that the sudden stoppage the Official Manual refers to only applies to the running of the engine, rather than its manufacture...
Rotex 582 engine price
About £4500 in the U.K.
I just installed the EMS-2 into a 912ULS powered LSA (Sky Ranger) for a fellow pilot at my airport and it displays 2 EGT channels (K type) at the bottom left and 2 CHT channels (VDO sensors on Analog 3 and 4) on the bottom right. The middle display is the oil temp and oil pressure (on analog 1 and 2) and the top of course is RPM and voltage. We removed 6 instruments from the panel (made a new panel) and the EMS-2 replaced all of them in a single 3 1/8" hole. This is a great instruments and you'll love what it can do. Looking forward to your review. It's amazing what MGL put inside this instrument for the price.
Great video. I am installing an AvMap Engibox to Rotax 582. Your video has really helped. Thank you very much.
Really super... I have a question here ... End of the day purpose of this engine is rotating the Fan right ...? What if we can manage that fan with other sources... Ex.. I have a bike , that bike rear wheel can alter to connect this fan ... Is that fan only the important thing from that engine or is there anything important to push forward..? Let's talk wings/controller in next point..
Basically yes, the function of the engine is to turn the propeller. It also produces some electricity, but that is very much a secondary function. By bike do you mean motorcycle? There are plenty of examples of people using motorcycle engines to power aircraft, although you usually need a gearbox to ensure that the propeller turns at the correct speed.
how much it costs?
About £5,000
Thanks for sharing. Mind telling us what gearbox, ratio and porp you plan on running?
Thank you. I’m using a B type gearbox and a Precision Propellers 52x55” three blade prop.
I am also making helicopter, I do not know the machine, Sir Pliz, you will give me information
Good information sir
I feel a little ditry like I just watched hard box porn. I need to take a shower.
Thank You for this nice presentation!!
Well done, lots of good info on the 582! Safe flights!
How long did it take to make this video WoW!
edwin kania it was probably about three days total - a day for all the B-roll at the start, another day for the actual unboxing stuff and another day to edit.
Please make a video about castle around Bangor anglesy from above
unboxing video as an art form. cool! used to know David Cook and I have helped someone build a Shadow. Will be watching your progress
Job Chithalan thank you! I’ve been trying to make this unboxing video for ages, but it was always really dull, so I thought a bit of ‘cinematography’ might liven it up a bit! Now I just need to get the engine on the plane 🤦♂️
Id 💩 myself haha ❤️💋
Super. Great. With love to.
