2022 Ninja 650 Riding home...Why you need a motorbike in Auckland, New Zealand
Welcome. This is riding home on 19th July 2023 after work. Heavy traffic as always for Auckland (New Zealand). In my car at this time of day, typically takes about 70 minutes to get home, we do it in approx 28 minutes on the bike will taking it chill.

Going over the first mods/upgrades to my new 2022 Kawsaki Ninja 650L. I got this as a commuter for running around local erands rather than having to drive my cars all the time. Whats the max cc bike you can get in nz?
@@numbpavonis2045 hey 👋 you can get any bike you like on a full license. You're restricted to LAMS approved bikes on your learners/restricted licenses. LAMS bikes can go up to 660cc, but also cannot be over a certain power.
@@jarsky so if you have full license u can get a 1000cc
Or 660 is max
@@numbpavonis2045 yup you can get a 1000cc+ with a full license and whatever power. You could go get a Kawasaki H2 if you have the $$. You can own one before that, but you can't sit your full license on it and you could be fined if you get pulled over
From East Auckland too! that's the same reason I want to learn a bike. Your video gives me more confidence now mate.
@@heyronmar awesome! riding on the motorway is easier, just keep an eyes on cars that could cut you off 😊
Do we have laws about lane splitting in NZ? I just bought my first bike yesterday (KLR650) but will be riding mostly off road/gravel roads so it doesn't really apply to me, just curious. It's cool to see some drivers giving you space to get through, except old mate in the Ranger... expected lol. And what was that clown at 3:05 up to?
@@KiwiPokerPlayer hey mate 🙂 yup we do have laws around lane splitting, you can look it up in the road code for motorcycles on what you can/can't do. Basically you can split on the right if traffic is slow, but shouldn't exceed more than 25km/h faster than traffic flow. Haha yeah typical ranger. I posted a snip of him on tiktok which has got 10s of thousands of views 😅
Oh and that clown decided they went the wrong way and were reversing back up the on ramp 🤦
@@jarsky oh ffs, what the fuck goes through some people's minds? "Yeah, I'll just reverse up this on ramp in Auckland traffic, that is a totally normal thing to do"
I just got my learners the other day can't wait to ride auckland just killing me in a car😅🤣
I ride outside emergency lane most of time,be careful though much safer
@@brucecormack1840 that's illegal so I'd rather not
That A-hole in the ranger at 9:25 was trying to block you!
8:55 ford ranger drivers are the worst.
Nothing like a bit of lane splitting at a reasonable pace
lmao i brought a bike after watching this then whisky throttled and almost fell into a lake 🤣🤣
@@Momosvlogsies oh damn man, hopefully all okay! Yup make sure ya don't sit to far back, so you've got plenty of movement to let go of the throttle! 😱
@@jarsky hehe yeah not a scratch just a sore arm I'm taking my BHST lessons so I don't get hurt again lol
Nice vid bro thank you. Thinking of getting back into riding, Auckland traffic is horrendous. Be careful out there bro, drivers out there be crazy.
@@72evenant35 you should, so much freedom with getting around! but yeah have to be hyperaware on roads like this
Yeah in a car that commute would rive me insane! So tempting to get a bike. I used to work on city road many years back, so I knew where that was the moment the video started lol
THIS WAS 11 YEARS AGO?!!!
But mostly....... you need a motorbike to do some wheelies! :-)
Loved the POV ride! I'll be getting my bike in New Zealand soon, and have a couple of curiosity questions (if you can answer). 1. Is lane changing allowed while riding a bike in NZ? 2. Is it legal to wear a half face helmet on a bike, or does is has to be a full face one? 3. Is the helmet compulsory for the pillion as well? 4. How is the situation of road rage with bikers? Do kiwis easily get offended the moment you cross them on a bike? 5. Are there any legalities when it comes to changing the exhaust of the bike? 6. How long does the rainy season lasts in Auckland? 7. Are there any speed cams installed on the roads or is it just the cops with the speed gun you have to be careful about? Again, just curious!
@gaurkshitiz hey mate no problem 😊 I can answer those for you 1. You mean lane splitting? Yes it is legal (what I do in this video) but there are rules around it which you can read in the NZ road code. 2. Yes you can wear a half face helmet, as long as the helmet is to one of the accepted standards which there are about 6 which you can read up on. 3. Yes helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger. It's the o ly safety gear which is. 4. Road rage is okay most of the time, but I've had several incidents with people in Auckland. Some drivers get enraged when you pass them bc they don't actually know that splitting is legal. Most of the time it's fine though. 5. Yes exhausts need to meet noise and emissions standards. They're pretty good with letting you run louder exhausts but if it's obnoxiously loud then they may fail you on yearly inspection, so consider keeping g the oem exhaust or a silencer for passing checks. 6. That's hard to answer as mostly just spring and autumn, but we've had a lot more rain in the last year. Also Auckland is the city of four seasons. It can change very rapid here because of being between 2 large bodies of water. 7. Yes there are fixed cameras, not too common but be wary of those. Also if you don't have a nz bike license, there are riding courses you can do whcuh are subsidised, they teach you about riding in NZ and they reduce your time to get your license by completing them. www.rideforever.co.nz
That reversing back out the onramp hahahaha
Typical NZ driving; deal with this stuff every day wether im in the car or on the bike 🤣
How is the traffic so bad in Auckland? It's not that big of a city and the whole of NZ only has 5,2 million people or so. Did they just copy everything from Australia who copied everything from the US?
@@Xerdoz copied in what way? Auckland is nearly 2m population, this motorway is the main arterial route through the city from south of Auckland to North of Auckland if you're passing through. It's also built with water on both sides so limited space to expand sideways. Unfortunately it was poorly planned for a growing city, slow development and a lackin public transport system.
highly recommended t get an exhaust in auckland. they cant see you they better hear you coming haha
Yeah i want a Two brothers S1R black, but exhausts are expensive for the ninja when i have other commitments too. Sponsor me two brothers haha 😅
@@jarsky haha i wish i could brother xd but i already spent like 7 k nzd in mine haha
Nice. I have the TST blinkers, Womet Tech shorty levers, I will get the crash protection pack like yours, and definitely need the swing arm spools. Thank you for showing the throttle derestrict. I am going to do that now.
😍
MONKEY, NOOOOO!! 😂
I be getting my a motorcycle license to get myself a motorcycle
Awesome bro, i recommend doing the ride forever course when you get a bike, it's only $20 and will teach you a lot 👌 it will also shorten your wait between licenses.
@@jarsky oh okay thanks bro
And what was that driver doing must be reversing @@jarsky
Hey what cc did you start on I’m looking to start riding when I turn 16 this year and just wondering what’s the best cc to start on
Hey! I first rode a Ninja 300, but when I started riding again I got this Ninja 650. It's a LAMS so restricted in power. I'm 100kg, so if you're lighter probabaly a 400cc would be better. Less torque but much lighter
Good vid…thanks
Thank you for all that wish you had light on connectors filming as most important part. Was great to see all you have done. Curious what changed when you restricted throttle?
Removing the restrictor allows you to do full wide open throttle. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes though but is only on the LAMS (power restricted) bikes. I'm not sure what you mean by light on connectors sorry?
Thanks for all video. I want to rebuild a ninja 650 crashed.
Hey is the srk 145 compatible with hicas on r33?
Lo canto a tutti i clienti russi che mi capitano; tranne che non una, ha successo.
I have seen a longer version of this video please upload that if possible or if somebody has the link please share it. Thanks 🙏
This is the full clip as far as I remember
@@jarsky In the New Girl episode this was the full clip but there was another extended part of the video which was not aired. That video was a few more seconds longer and in the beginning the song started with something sounding like : “De re va! it’s very! Matishka pai otanne sukhari !…” and then the song would start: Matishka matishka.. I had a few Russian guys listen to that original song but they couldn’t confirm the language themselves. They said it’s bits and pieces of Russian words jumbled up with heavy Russian accent. This was probably back in like 2013.
The fact that they hired someone who spoke Russian, wrote a jingle, then animated a monkey to look like a caricature of Zooey Deschanel just makes this joke complete 😂
That person didn't speak Russian, he was reading Russian words with English transcription

Hello, I don't want to keep clock Spring and I also don't want quick release. I do however want to keep my horn. Please recommend me what to get. 93 r33 skyline gts. Thank you so much.
Hey, if you don't need any of that you could just use a Works Bell 622 boss kit. It's a longer one and still comes with horn wiring
@@jarsky good deal. Will I still need the bushing that you printed? Thank you in advance.
@@Homemade240sxturbo i dont think so, mines just bc of the incompatibility on the short hub that eliminates the clock spring and short enough for a dished wheel. The Worksbells ive never had problems with like that
@@jarsky cool. Also what steering type would you recommend for 622 to make it feel more like stock?
Great video. A best instruction video I've seen online. A+
Nice video l, I’m not very mechanical and just got my r&g sliders and usb socket to install for my ninja 650 2021.
its a shame so many dont come with a usb socket. they typically get installed at the dealership as an extra. but it makes a huge difference for adventure rides!
Love to see it. I haven’t thought about the USB mount, brilliant! I have the Similar set. I installed the TST integrated taillight with the adjustable license plate holder tucked in. Did a passenger peg delete. It look really nice. I already did an ECU Flash and Exhaust.Future Mods I’ll be going for will be Racing RearSet, carbon fiber back seat cowl a lower handle bar for a little aggressive position. Enjoy your ride!
Here are some updated pics with new black adjustable pegs, gold heal plates to go with the rest of the gold, black radiator grill, tinted windshield and few bits n pieces. Still want to upgrade the exhaust for like a Two Brothers black carbon. ibb.co/L9w5qrR ibb.co/9gtW0kH ibb.co/64C8KpY ibb.co/WPj4vYd ibb.co/WkP7WHR The Kawasaki DC Power outlet is part 99994-1373 if you need one. The USB charger is the Aukey 30W USB-A/USB-C Dual Port Charger which fits in the socket nice and flush. Did you find the Ecu flash made a difference or did you do it and the exhaust at the same time? I might do similar with the handle bars I was looking for some because I find with highway riding and wind here i need to tuck down and in a lot more and lower bars would be much more comfortable for that. TST really do make some great stuff 👌
@@jarsky Looking Greattt! It definitely did gain some more horsepower with all the restrictions out. Good fuel mapping. It runs much cooler now. I live in Florida and it gets hot especially in Summer before flashing it runs hot 225 degrees Fahrenheit and how it doesn’t go pass 204 it stays around 170-190. MooreMafia did that.

For Bubble Windshield check out PowerBronze Two Brothers are awesome. Akropovic, M4 Street Slayer. I really Want to Try RaceFit exhausts but I don’t think they make it for our Kawi 650. It’s so loud they come with earplugs. Maybe when I get a Zx6r or Gixxer 750 I’ll definitely be putting in on So when I ordered my exhaust, I went ahead and our DNA air filters, and Graves Block offs plate from Revzilla installed them and did pair valve delete and 02 sensor. Took off the ECU to MooreMafia. I did all at ones so I don’t have to go back and forth. Put on some Vortex chain and sprockets.
@@XJENERAL nice, I work in C but in F im going to say it sits around 205F while riding and goes up to around 223F if sitting still idle. But its also been the end of Summer, so not sure about mid summer. Id be keen on a flash just if it can get the temp down for summer. I was looking at bubble shields but decided I liked the lower sportier shield. Yeah DNA airfilter + TwoBrothers S1R Black Carbon was what I was looking at. I also want to be mindful of spending to much on a 650...you can spend way to much once you start going down the modification hole. Once I get my Full license and am unrestricted from what bike I can ride here, id like to go for like an Indian FTR Carbon or Yamaha MT-09. I do for sure need a street rack though, i'd like to do a few shortish road trips and its a bit hard carrying everything in a backpack.
It's so annoying to have ninja650 as the first bike due to LAMS. Like I have no idea what bike to upgrade if I pass the CBTA full. There are 3 bikes with both sharp appearance and comfy riding triangle: Ducati Supersport 950, Suzuki S1000TRQ/GT, and Ninja1000SX. But Ducati is still 2-cylinder while the other 2 are 20kg heavier than Ninja650. So a bit hard to think about how to spend that 15K on an ideal upgrade.
Well for me it was between the Ninja 650 / Z650 or the R7. I'm glad I didnt go smaller because it has some good guts for overtaking and riding the motorway / state highways. I've gotten pretty comfortable in riding it in 300km. Probably do a Ride Safe course and then go for my CBTA-R . I probably dont need to do it for the R but I think I will anyway since its so affordable. I think once I get off LAMS id probably like an MT-07 or MT-09 (non LA); beautiful bike, and they sound so good. Theres really quite a few really nice bikes once you get off LAMS if ya got the money.... BMW S1000RR Ducati Streetfighter V4 Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX Indian FTR R Carbon Suzuki GSX-S750 I think if I could justify the $$$, my ultimate sport bike currently would probably be the Ninja H2, the 2023 is open for Pre-orders right now but I have other priorities at the moment. Then of course theres the whole cruiser market too. I do love me a nice blacked out Indian Scout / Chief Bobber, or a Harley Breakout. 👌 I'm pretty keen on a cruiser as well so may just stick with a cheaper sport bike; an FTR carbon or MT-09
Or just derestrict the 650.

Hey mate, yeah I just cut them off with a cutting disc 😊 some say you can pull them out with pliers but I couldn't pull mine out
@@jarsky I couldn’t pull ‘‘em off either so I just cut them. Awesome tutorial mate thanks for the reply!
Hey mate, I’ve managed to watch your video great video , I was way off with the horn wire and will have to get the a copy of that 3D printed part made up. Super video mate, don’t suppose you have any idea on fuel gauge, speedo and reverse lights wiring ? Non of mine work, cleaned up the fuel sender that did nothing so wondering if it’s a wiring issue? Speedo hasn’t worked since I got it back on the road. Also subbed you should do more videos mate
Hopefully it helps you out with finishing yours off and explains how it works :) My fuel gauge has issues as well, but I think mine is still the sender unit even though I took it out and cleaned it with Acetone and Isopropyl, I never took the actual float apart and cleaned the head. Since youve already done that, i'd probably recommend testing the the wires for continuity (Theyre the Red, Green, Black (?) wires that go into the fuel hat). If you can easily get the fuel sender out again, id test the resistance on that as well (Attach a multi meter to the Black & White wires and move the float). The multimeter should read between ~5 Ohms at Empty to about 90 Ohms at Full. If that is working fine, then theres probably an issue with the wiring somwhere back to the ECU or dash. The wiring harnes for the fuel pump & fuel sender you can trace it, it goes up the rear of the seats behind the fuel pump hatch, and it goes through the rear firewall and is part of the harness that runs down the right hand side of the car , crosses over the driver footwell and over to the ECU. Then the ECU sends the signal to the cluster. Everything for the cluster comes from the ECU. Speedo (and I assume Odometer) is probably related to the speed sensor. Theres a sender at the front of the gearbox that perhaps has an issue. The wiring for that goes up into the engine bay, through the relay box, then into the main harness that runs behind the engine and through the firewall to the ECU. You probably need to get the car in the air and remove that sender and check the teeth on the drive are ok ( its like a worm gear). It's on the right hand side near the front by the bellhousing off memory, the connector harness is about 20cm long to the plug. The reverse lights, I actually just tapped into mine for a reverse signal just 2 weeks ago for my reverse camera install. I can tell you that the wire is red & blue, and I *believe* it runs through the harness on the left side of the car. But considering you have a Speedo issue which is probably at the gearbox as well, id guess maybe the issue is more likely to be the reverse switch atthe gearbox, you'll probably have to check the wiring into it. I believe its a green (positive) and black (negative) wire. It's also on the right hand side of the gearbox behind the slave cylinder. Pull the cover back on it and check the connections and do a continuity test on it putting it into Reverse gear. Given that both speedo AND reverse lights run into the gearbox harness that both go to the relay box under the bonnet, i'd also check that the gearbox harness is connector is plugged in properly.

NRG have now made a Short Hub specifically for the these cars. It does appear to resemble the design of the Works Bell so you may find its too tall to use with a standard Quick Release / Dished setup. Unfortunately their Thin Quick Release is not compatible with their Short Hubs without a 3rd party adapter. There may be other thin quick releases that may work though.
