There is one thing about this anime that I like besides Kotonoha's character. It's the way it takes Makoto as a harem VN protagonist and works with that concept. First, Makoto goes after a shy and sensitive girl who is struggling to trust him. She's difficult, and this begins to tire him out. Refusing to be patient with Kotonoha, he agrees to practice with Sekai, which gets him the physical intimacy that he wanted. But most importantly, he gets away with it. Unfortunately for him, seeing Sekai also brings its own fair share of baggage that he doesn't want to deal with. So, he goes after the next easy option. And once again, he gets away with it. And it goes on and on. The little concern for the girls' feelings that he had in the beginning is long gone, and now that everybody hates his ass he returns to the only person who welcomes him with open arms. The dude's wild. When I finished the anime, I decided to play the VN just so I could give Kotonoha the best ending. Which I did. The one route where you're entirely loyal to Kotonoha is pretty nice. But then I also thought to check out other routes with Kotonoha, which requires you to choose Sekai in certain moments. Then it hit me that if I go that route and force other endings through cheating on Kotonoha I will essentially follow down the path that Makoto took in the anime. That is pursuing your goal with no regard to how it affects the girls involved. It's weird to think like that, considering that this is just a VN, but then again in the anime Makoto does start treating everything like it's a game that he's playing with no consequences. It's just interesting. Sorry if my rambling doesn't make any sense. On the topic of Kotonoha her story hurts me personally as I can very much relate to being a hypersensitive person (both emotionally and physically) who gets too attached to people to the point of being blindsided. Too close to home. Also, VN was alright. I like the soundtrack, but the dialogue is godawful in this game. The characters talk about nonsense for 5 minutes and it has little to no importance to anything. And if it is important it's dragged on for too long.

I agree. No show is perfect, there are no 10/10 anime out there. It is simply impossible. Ashita no Joe comes close to me however.

I recently rewatched this anime after randomly remembering this guy's funkyass hair, then proceeded to read the rest of the manga. Absolutely love the mind games in this one and how the Lycaons developed into a strong team thanks to Tokuchi's plans/schemes. At some point, he even thought he was comfortable with the team! But he says a gambler can't have such feelings haha. Its quite the read, although it may not be everyone's cup of tea. I honestly wouldn't have watched this show cause its art style wasn't appealing to me at the time. But I'm now glad my late cousin sat me down and convinced me to watch a few episodes of it with him. Its my favorite baseball anime/manga now thanks to him 🙏

Yeah, the anime is a dumpster fire, like the worst routes of the VN. I am not sure you know of it, but the manga version of School Days is *MUCH better than the anime.* Drops the filler and superfluous elements and has actual character development. Makoto is more likable there as he actually regrets his mistakes and tries to better and he does not sleep around either. The sex and superfluous elements are dropped in lieu of actual character development. Also, the art style is better too.

I think you're forgetting that not everyone is comfortable with kissing or getting physically affectionate in public, not to mention Kotonoha just met the guy

I actually haven't watched School Days, but I remember watching some stills from the infamous ending in some forums back in the late 2000s or early 2010s, I don't think it was the first violent anime scene I saw, but the thing that surprised me is that it seemed like a normal school series, that was the thing that confused me. I've watched anime since my early childhood with shows like Dragon Ball, Ranma ½ and Pokémon in the late '90s, during the mid 2000s I kind of stopped watching anime because it became rarer for new series to be shown on TV, but when I finally had more access to the internet I found more series which were different from what I used to watch, School Days was one that always got recommendations. Interestingly, there's been a sort of resurgence in interest towards School Days here in Latin America, because just less than a month ago it finally received an official Latin American Spanish dub, with Makoto being voiced by the same VA who dubs Atsushi in Tokyo Revengers, Kotonoha sharing the same VA with Mina Ashiro from Kaijū No. 8 and Sayaka from Keep your Hands Off Eizouken! The VAs for the dub weren't aware of the ending either

I know it's a standard for old anime to have better atmosphere becuase of the cell shading but my goodness and I a sucker for the choppy animation and color pallet. This isn't exclusive to this show but it's still beautiful.

Even though School Days premiered over 10 years ago and is still being talked about, it means the show was right to do its job. At first it's a romcom with racy scenes, then it turns into a drama where you see the main characters committing immoral acts out of selfishness. Makoto wasn't an evil person, he's just a hormonal teenager who acted out of selfishness. Sekai had good intentions at the beginning, but in the end she let her emotions rule her, becoming a selfish person to the point of not caring about Kotonoha's feelings. And finally, Kotonoha was a shy and demure young woman, but her low self-esteem and her own illusions and admiration for Makoto clouded her judgment to such a degree that she suffered a mental breakdown. The show is not a romantic comedy, it is not a love story composed of a love triangle; it is the deconstruction of three characters who let love and lust dominate their lives to the point of suffering the consequences. Just because the characters do bad and unfair things doesn't mean that the anime is bad, I agree that they exaggerated too much with the ending, but at the end of the day everything they showed in the anime is a watered down and incomplete version of the visual novels.

I don't agree with the conclusion that this show is bad. I truly think it is a really good anime, and the VN is even better. Having immoral characters doing immoral things doesn't make it bad. It might make it uncomfortable, weird, or infuriating to watch, but that doesn't mean it's bad by any means. In fact, I think the writing is genius, although it's better in the VN. Almost every situation that happens is realistic, and the whole plot makes sense for the most part. I might be biased because I played the VN first (I got three endings before watching the anime, none of them were bad endings, but boy, they were depressing as hell). In the VN, you get a wider view of how the characters truly are. Kotonoha's breakdown is even deeper and better developed, as she suffers much more there than in the anime, so you might need that context to understand some of her psychology. The same applies to the rest of the cast. This anime/VN is about psychological horror and romance, showing you the worst possible scenario if you cheat so much. Regarding realism, it is very true to actual teen/young adult behavior. There is almost no idealization of human relationships. I truly think this anime deserves a deeper look because there are so many things to talk about. I believe there are videos and written reviews that actually cover the deeper aspects of the show. And there's another genius detail about this show that you didn't mention, which I think is key to the whole plot. Setsuna is an interesting character in her own right. She literally fell in love with Makoto when he saved her from some bullies at the beginning of the school semester. During that time, she told Sekai about her feelings for Makoto, and Sekai did the same thing she did with Makoto-trying to bring them together. However, Sekai developed feelings for him and one day, when the school was setting the new seats for the classes, Sekai asked Setsuna to switch seats, and she accepted. That single detail is huge, it implies a lot about the series' nature, it's like an infinite loop of girls getting interested on Makoto, boycotting anyone even if they are friends to get some Makoto, absolute insane stuff. You can see a lot of how much Setsuna did develop if you play Shiny Days (which is a remastered version of Summer Days), her is way quieter and reserved there, and in that story (which happens before the second school semester) neither Kotonoha nor Sekai knows each other. I think I explained everything wrong, but I hope you got the idea lmao.

I think it is sort of a realistic reaction for makoto. I think a teen boy curious abt s** all of a sudden get a harem of girl he would take advantage of the situation and sleep with all of them. He not oblivious to the girl feeling. Him forcing himself on kotonha is realistic bc their is real sexual harasser in the real world. Kotonoha forgiving him also make sense she was bully and the first person that show her kindess and love she would probably get attach to. Setsuna and the other girl on the other hand aren't. Agreed I don't know why I kept watching it. It so bad it good is the accurate description of this anime

The entire universe of this visual novel is something i would never imagine creating in my life. There was another youtuber who uploaded a video about a separate universe called "Summer Days" which surprised me, but nothing made me more speechless the hearing about Makoto's Dad . I honestly thought he was doing fatherless behavior activities, turns out the fuckboy apple doesn’t fall far from the fuckboy tree

The mangas (Yes, they're are mangas) somehow make even more out there and somehow the MC is worse in them (Especially Cross Days)

I first watched this like 10 or so years ago after a reviewer on TGWTG talked about and showed the infamous stabbing scene clip. I couldn't believe an anime like that existed, so I ended up watching it lol

I first watched anime in the late 1970s, and I've watched it off and on since then. Many years ago, I experienced the craziness that is School Days. I even bought the visual novel but haven't felt up to playing through it yet. I'm not even convinced that School Days is bad. Whether it is or not might depend on how you interpret it. Before I encountered School Days, I had encountered many school romance/ecchi/harem anime series, and I watched them out of morbid curiosity and a desire for some quality cringe. The entire concept behind this type of anime is stupid and more than a little creepy. I see School Days as a subversion of this type of anime. The typical harem anime is highly unrealistic, far too positive, and little more than a cringeworthy fantasy for malodorous basement-dwelling neckbeards who have a fixation on women's underwear. School Days shows what could happen in a high school harem situation with the sorts of jerks that are found in high schools everywhere. Then, it takes it up a few notches and allows the situation to spiral out of control. I love how it starts like any other crappy high school romance series, and then it goes horrifically wrong. As crazy as it is, it is far more realistic than the stereotypical harem anime. If this type of situation could play out in real life, it would surely lead to death and destruction.

I don't think this was necessarily what you were trying to convey, but it would be a good idea to clearly distinguish between bad quality (direction, writing, animation, music, execution) vs. the character is a bad person or makes bad decisions. That is to say, the video sometimes veers close to suggesting that the quality is synonymous with the likablity or behavior of the cast. From the surrounding context, I don't think that's what the intent was, but at times, it did get muddied enough that it would probably be worth noting for the future. What matters most when dealing with characters as bad people is whether or not the way it's conveyed recognizes the bad actions for what they are. I only watched it in high school as it was airing, so I couldn't possibly comment on the actual execution; however, the show definitely treated the characters like they were awful, melodramatic scumbags. While that does sound like a bare minimum, it's shocking how often this is handled wrong by writers putting their characters on pedestals or directors that miss the point. Whether or not it's done well is a whole other matter.

fun fact: school days is part of a larger universe of visual novels and EVERYONE IS RELATED BY BLOOD tho most characters dont know that. the chart online for family relations in the franchise is a fucking mess. its not even a circle... its a spiral where the arms cross each other multiple times... and even over multiple generations.

Man, I ended up watching this in like, middle school. Back then I would just choose random animes off the list of whatever free site I was using at the time. I thought it was just going to be a love triangle, and oh boy I was NOT prepared for everything that happened. Its been over 15 years since I've seen it and its always stuck with me.
