    I think this happens on the thunderbird 900 too when the battery is low. I know owners keep the battery fully charged.

    Thank you kindly, friend. Just brought up numerous reports of same issue. Now I know how keen Triumph are to address, help and behave as the only entity that could be errant in this situation, I will not be spending my finest Great British Pounds sterling with this manufacturer in the future. Fair enough, the Japanese seem keen to earn my business and dont have a record of treating customers this way. So be it.

    I have exactly the same year and model, even same colours. I've had a flat battery once and a tired battery at the end of its servicable life, and the bike must have a failsafe as it just won't turn over.

    So many negative comments about Triumph who had no obligation to repair this 7 year old bike under warrently. I can tell you what caused this, the safe starting system gets bypassed for some other starter problem - then crunch comes as it becomes possible to engage the starter on a running engine

    • @simsey33
      @simsey33 5 місяців тому

      Hey Andy. Can you elaborate on your response above? You said "safe starting system gets bypassed for some other starter problem", what other problems do you mean? Is there some preemptive maintenance I can do to prevent this on my bike? Have you seen cases where starter has been engaged on a running engine leading to this failure or is this more an educated guess on your part? Thanks!

      @@simsey33 Hi Yes, i can, I have a T100 efi, 11 years old now, with a starting issue where it turns half turn and stops. If I let go of the starter button and reapply it may repeat, if I keep a hold it will reengage the starter, 9/10 starting correctly. So I've been down the search path rabbit hole, looking for a fix. So many fixes suggest the cure is to bypasss the clucth cut-out, the side-stand cut-out and the neutral selection switch, oh yes and replace the relays. None of this is necessary, the real problem is the low voltage detection in the ECU is too high. I guess you can have bikes where the component tolerences add up the wrong way and make this problem worse. My bike is sitting with a brand new battery on a battery monitor and it can still do it! But those bikes that have cracked their cases didn't crack them on just the starter kick back, mine does that half the time it gives up on the first half turn with that wonderful backwards running whirr. Let me know what you think.

  • @andyb.5268
    @andyb.5268 6 місяців тому

    This is what happens after 'fixing' the half turn starter problem,, clucth switch, side-stand switch and neutral switch get bypassed. Then it's overly easy to engage the starter with motror running and in gear, just hit the starter instead of the horn. You won't know until you restart. The 'fix' for the half turn issue is just misleading, the problem is within the ECU and not bad switches.

    Triumph should be ashamed of themselves for not taking responsibility and not helping you out , I'm sure they wouldn't like that to happen to them. Thank you Serge for bringing this engine design fault (which could happen at anytime to any other T100, so be ready) and poor customer service, to the public's attention.

    There's a UA-cam video somewhere that points out that (in alphabetical order) BMW, Harley and Triumph have the worst repair records over the first few years of ownership. Disclaimer - I've owned five Harleys and the bikes gave me no problems. It was the quality of work done by Harley dealers that proved problematic.

    This was a failure on early bonnevilles. It didn't happen that often and only seemed to happen if the engine backfired while starting with the starter still engaged. Triumph in I believe around 2005 beefed up the casting. There are some out there that even with this update the problem could still happen. Back then triumph did help out with some of the out of warranty failures. There is an aftermarket kit/ plate that can be installed to beef up the area so this doesn't happen. I have also seen online that some have repaired the bike using the kit, it is called Safe Start. Hope this helps. I have a 2007 T100 and keep my fingers crossed when I start it hoping it doesn't backfire.

    I have 40,000km on my 2010 T100 and so far I have no problems. None! It is stored well and been in the rain once thanks to the Aussie weather. However if the Australian marketed W800 was available at that time I would have jumped on. I’ve been involved in Japanese vehicles from a very young age and a mechanic for almost as long. Always a fan of Jap built anything.

    before you give it away, a pproach a really good tig welder and see if they can reinstate/reinforce those parts of the engine cases and outer cover that have disintegrated.

  • @bigred8438
    @bigred8438 Рік тому

    This story is really sad and disappointing, because all l have heard about these engines is that they are bullet proof. This is obviously a lie, a con, and plan wishful thinking. But this so typical of the British bike industry through history. Machines were poorly designed, poorly made with worn out machine tools etc, and the public had to accept it. If this was a BMW they would never have let this happen in the first place, and if they did inadvertently let some type of flaw like this get through, they would be embarrassed enough to fix it, because they have pride and integrity in their product. Not so the British obviously, and not so Triumph and John Bloor.

  • @bigred8438
    @bigred8438 Рік тому

    It also means that if it is a design flaw on your bike, that it could happen to others, that there should be a recall of the bikes to fix the flaw in all of that model engine.

    I understand this is an old vid but 2 question, if you have time and you don't mind. What caused the failure in the first play Any Idea, would like to know as I"m looking at buying a used 2013 Bonneville t100, and the 2nd question is, what bike did you purchase to replace the Bonneville, Thank you Karl Squire

    • @annecy5487
      @annecy5487 Рік тому

      I believe the failure was caused either by a casting defect, quality issue, or by the fact that the guiding boss for the intermediate starting gear shaft was undersized, design issue. I understand that there are after market kits available to re-enforce the boss in the clutch cover so it seems to be a well know problem. I replaced the Bonneville with 2019 Ducati Cafe Racer. So far I still love it. Different style of bike. Good luck with your purchase!

    I only heard last week talking to a motorcycle shop owner in perth Wa he had sold a Triumph speedmaster not sure of the year and the same problem had happened being under used bike warranty they had to fix it, they eventually found another engine from somewhere in the eastern states, fitted it up, within a short period of time it had the same problem, the motorcycle shop managed to find someone that could weld the problem area properly, the shop lost a lot of money sorting out the problem, the bike shop did the right thing

    Triumph know their transmission is flawed. They should put their hands in their pockets and fix it under warranty. A lot of potential customers will make other choices for their bikes.
