Shaping or steaming the felt hat to retain it’s shape
The lining is easily removed/reinstalled in the akubra hats. Provides more comfort and versatility. I enjoyed your video.
But I'm not sure if it comes out easily on the models with eyelet vents. I have no experience with those.
too much wind noise couldn't be bothered lstening
Why would anyone wear felt in the summer?
Shade is shade, insulation is insulation. Provided you have no lining and breathing holes, it will cool your head all the same.
Your arms are very sexy
Can I use this on Stetson cowboy hats too?
It's an open crown, so experiment with what feels right for you. It doesn't have to be a fedora bash. I've embraced the hat's heritage and adopted a squatter style.
A cotton sweat band will leave sweat stains on the base of the crown and inside edge of the brim. I have one hat with a cloth sweat band. One summer and it was ruined with stains and salt deposts on the outside. Never again. Get a straw hat for summer wear. Don't blow money on a felt hat with a make believe cotton sweat band that will soak up the sweat and pass it on to the hat leaving some ugly stains and salt deposits. Get a hat designed for summer wear
Or just get a hat with a leather band and no lining.
The Coober Pedy is a great looking hat and cuts the glare. I've got a black one.
Damn excellent video!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
I have a small collection (5) of Akubra hats and they are just all of the highest quality! No other hat really is made better or with higher standard materials and workmanship than Akubra hats do theirs. I love them and stick with them, although I have 2 Stetsons and 1 Lucky 7 from the American Hat Company, which are all fabulous hats, too.
Do you think its possible to change the hat Band? I like the usual hat band, but i like the hat band of the traveller more.
Nicely done
Hello, I bought a Scippis Brandon without a chinstrap and it also has a short stitch length. Thanks to your video, I bought the Akubra chinstrap after all. Thank you!
To reshape the brim steaming it over a boiling hot kettle anti-clockwise then find some swade leather oil and spray it anti-clockwise then get some fine grit sandpaper to get rid of the excess fluff then brush the hat in a anti-clockwise direction
which do you like better this one or your campdraft? do you use steam to shape them?
I actually found myself wearing this more often than my campdraft. This one is not too high compared to my campdraft. Yeah I use steam to shape them.
Thanks for your video... My Akubra is the same color as this one you are showing but mine is an Akubra Squatter Imperial and it really looks the same as yours. I am attempting to shape mine today so your video is helpful.
I have this hat in a lovely brown color (Fawn) with red lining. I just worked on re-shaping the top and hope I will feel good wearing it now.
really like this hat, i have a campdraft too andxjust got a federation aswel. i wanted a,hat i can wear open crown but alotcof the hats have crowns that are too high, so this might be perfect to wear open crown without being too high
I like it, is this possible with every felt hat?
Thanks for sharing this video. I got a Traveller and a chin strap which I didn’t install because the instructions say that it doesn’t work on buckram (soft) headbands, however you demonstrated that it can be installed without problems.
Isn't this the akubra style master or akubra bogart?
It’s similar, but squatter has a wider brim and has even longer brim at front and back.
Also known as the camp draft
It’s actually not mate, camp draft is totally different from squatter. Camp draft has higher crown and even brim all around. Squatter has lower crown and longer brim in front and back.
@@akubraandwhatnot8084 cool thanks mate , looks similar
Also Campdraft has a ribbon while the Squatter has a 30mm band
Thanks. I was wondering if you could use it with the felt brim strap
Back in the day, Akubra made the Stetson Open Road under licence & the Camp Draft is a copy of the hat Akubra made during that era. It is far superior to the modern day Stetson Open Roads
Define “superior.”
@@thewhiteelephant Australian.....
@@michaeleastham3868 yeah, Australia is a great place to live these days, eh? 😂
@@thewhiteelephant That all depends on where you're from, certainly superior to America.. Canada..New Zealand.. Any communist country or third world.. etc.
@@michaeleastham3868 That all depends on what part of the US you live. You’re referring to the liberal commie run states.
Like the tall crown best. Can you get it with a raw edge brim ?
Not the campdraft but I’ve seen some who stripped it out.
Good day. How do Coober Pedy’s handle heat? Do they get too warm with that liner?
Hi. They do get hot with the liner, most folks says to take the liner off but it takes the premiumness out of it if you know what I mean. The holes on the side do help though.
@@akubraandwhatnot8084 appreciate it. Thank you.
@@akubraandwhatnot8084 This is a city/dress style hat, though some wear it for working. If you want the unlined working hat try the 'Cattleman', or the same hat crown shape as the Coober, but larger brim working hat, check out the 'Riverina'. I have three Riverina hats, two Territorial, and one Pilbara. I love larger brims.
I have an older black coober pedy no lining.its been one of my best hot and humid weather hat .some times I ad a little water saved my bald head
Nice overview of the hat. I have one, and you've given me lots of ideas for it. Thank you!
Nice hat!
I bet the Avalon won't last as long. The cotton band will wear and rot over time. Great video. Thank you & thumbs up!
Nice to finally find a video that shows a longer, in-the-field look and review on the Avalon. Can't find a lot about this hat but looks good on you. I also have a Cattleman that I'm glad I pulled the lining out of, and an Angler that I left the liner in so I only use seasonally here in California.
So what's the color of this hat?
I've never seen the campdraft in brown! I love it!
Just bought/ordered the campdraft and the sombrero.... looking forward to seeing how they compare to US Stetson brand!
One of these days I'll get one. I'm waiting to see if they'll ever offer one at David Morgan in a darker color like yours.
This line has been discontinued here in Australia so whatever is with David Morgan is probably the last ones.
@@akubraandwhatnot8084 Thats too bad... they're very popular here.
I like the bushman and the discontinued that too, similar hat bigger brim
I'm on the low low end of a Large. 57.8 cm. Contemplating a medium. I don't want a loose hat. Does the Avalon run large in your opinion?
They do have large. Couple of medium that I tried was totally different size from each other, all medium. Try different sizes when you are there. Reminder also that slightly bigger is better as you can always stuff a napkin under the sweat band.
Man Australia is getting weird with this lockdown stuff, Crocodile Dundee would of never stood for it if the cops didn’t shoot him
Word
Rubbish, stop believing your MSM...
I wear a Banjo Patterson fall and winter and a hemp Range for summer on walk-a-bouts in town. The leather bands are great and provide an excellent fit but I removed the liner in the Banjo. I find that it made my bald head sweat because it doesn’t breathe. I have never conditioned the sheep leather bands but I wear them often so the oils from my skin probably keep them conditioned. My Banjo is knocking on five years old and the Range maybe three, both live on hat racks in my truck/RV while modern day Waltzing Matilda. The Banjo has seen many rain and snow storms. There’s is no evidence of cracking or deterioration to either band but the graphics are completely worn away. I wear a Double H (Darby, Montana) palm cowboy hat that can be dunked in a stream or soaked by other means when working or recreating when it is real hot.
Great tips and insight. Thanks very much bro
Thank you so much for uploading this video! I have also got 2 Akubra hats - Riverina Loden and The Croc - and love 'em! But realised soon enough that a chinstrap was essential when my Riverina flew straight into the middle of the road. Thank god the car stopped instead of running over it! This is the best video showing how to attach the Akubra chinstrap with good step-by-step explanation. Many thanks again 😊
I have a Riverina with chinstrap as well. With such a wide brim, now my concern is to take off in high winds 😆
Hey mate, pull the lining out of the Cooper Pedy, this helps the heat. I have the Banjo Patterson, pulled the lining out, very much improved for heat escaping.
Thought of that but I quite like the lining, the hat became my winter hat instead.
Hi Great vid What do you recommend with Sizing on the Cooperpedy? My measurements are are 57 with a tape measure, should I go a 58 or 59? Thanks
Go for 58. You can always add some soft padding behind the leather sweat band. Too big and the padding begins to crest the leather. S as long as you don’t leave the hat inside your car during summer it shouldn’t shrink that bad.
I have several coober pedy hats.one has lining the other two I pulled the lining out. And it works better in California on the hottest days keeps my bald head safe from the sun
That string is a wind cord.
I'd just pounce it a little. (Sand lightly with 400-800 grit paper) rip out the liner because I don't like em. Steam to shape and wear. If it were too tapered or small I'd reblock it but that would be the last resort.
Well done!
Very slick set up
I love them, I have 3. But is it a copy of the American Stetson Stratoliner or vice versa?
The stratoliner was introduced in the 1940s. It’s really just an open crown hat with a narrower brim to suit a more modern (for the time) lifestyle. IE, typically hats served a needed purpose in keeping off the Sun and rain in an era when using public transport was very common. The narrower brim was more accommodating in a full streetcar. I don’t know when the Camp Draft was first produced. The hats look similar particularly the narrow hat band but, if you change the hat band to a wider hatband…voilá suddenly you have a different hat. I suppose there is a very limited range of ways to style a fedora - the crease, brim width and finishing and the hat band, and that’s all? I have a Stetson Stratoliner in silver belly and a couple of Akubras. I reckon the Akubra felt, sweatband and overall manufacture and quality control is better than Stetson’s. Stetson *does* have a straighter line up to the crown, some like it, some don’t. This is purely a personal preference. In my case, one Stetson is enough. I would rather have the Akubra’s stronger felt. Of course, I would also like if Akubra reintroduced a wider range of colours and styles as they had in the 1990s.
I read that the Campdraft was originally the Stetson Open Road made by Akubra for the Australian market. That was of course back when the OR was an open crown hat. When Stetson changed the OR to pre-creased, Akubra kept making the open crown model under their own label and renamed it the Campdraft.
Very talented,,,, looks a lot like,,,, a pork/ Bishop,,,, great video,,,, Love them hats 🤠👍💯
I would love to have one ! Only problem is They don't make them anymore !
Ask around the hatters. They would normally have old stock lying around. I found this gem at the Brisbane hatters
Checkout Strand Hatters as they have some. My daughter got me one for Christmas!
Once felt has faded or become discoloured there isn"t a great deal one can do. Light sanding will only remove surface stains & you risk damaging the felt if you go too far. This kind of wear & tear though is all part of the hat's history. Akubra's brim edges do tend to go soft if they get a lot of rain. Commercial hat stiffeners aren't that great & it's best to make your own shellac stiffener using unwaxed blonde shellac flakes disolved in denatured alcohol. Incidently, Akubra's 'Down Under' was the model used by Paul Hogan in 'Cocodile Dundee'
Akka
I liked teardrop best
