Uncommon Roots Homestead
United States
Приєднався 29 чер 2020
Welcome to our little corner of the internet!
We are a "city" family that's moving to the country. We purchased 14 acres and have started to make it home.
Join us as we build our Uncommon Roots Homestead! We will be posting videos on Tuesdays and Thursdays (and sometimes Saturday!) about homesteading, natural living, sustainability, and easy educational how-to's!
A little about our name:
Sometimes, you're placed somewhere that you never imagined. That's how we feel about landing in Tennessee.
With one of us from Florida and the other New York, we never would have guessed that Tennessee would be the state we'd call home. It's uncommon to us, but we're choosing to put down our roots-to grow where we're planted.
Just like the lone ground cherry plant we found THRIVING in our new driveway, we've chosen to make uncommon choices in an uncommon place. So come on, we're learning and growing (together)-are you in?

Great👍🏼🙌🏼
Citrus does not go dormant, it’s an evergreen.
Did your HOA ever find out?
Use the dough hook on the stand mixer to wash the butter on low speed, after draining the buttermilk 1st time. Use ice cold filtered water, "I recommend Brita" because chlorine will change flavor. After water is clear, pour it out, add salt and let the stand mixer do all the dirty work. After salting speed up the mixer and the butter will come off the bowl wall. Just pack the butter into containers. Easier not harder. I have a you tube video about this, ua-cam.com/video/bgFQo4RXoYY/v-deo.html
What else can I cover the jar with besides the bee wax? Hello from Johnson City, Tn!!
Can u keep a lemon tree in an unheated garage in winter zone 6A? TY
Hi…I enjoyed your video and enjoyed making homemade butter. I have a few questions, though. Could you explain more why this is a more sustainable choice? What differs in how the butter and cream are commercially made and sold? Also, what are your cost savings? I realize I am commenting after a very long four years where grocery prices have skyrocketed, but it actually seems to be more expensive to buy cream than butter. I realize you get buttermilk, too, but I rarely use that and when a recipe calls for it I use 2% milk with a touch of vinegar.
Great tour. Thanks for sharing 👍. New subscriber 👍.
"Thankfully, we live in 2020" is such a weird thing to say.
I’m in 7b. I’d doesn’t really freeze but a few times.
Thank you so much for sharing the process🙏🏽 I’m super excited to try the recipe❤
Please come back and do some more videos!
Love your spirit ❤️
I love your story. How you mix the modern with the traditional with the homesteading. Thank you for sharing your life and vision. I found you by looking for a one day bagel recipe - bake and eat in approximately an hour! We live in middle TN, transplanted from OH (me) and CA (husband). I gardened and canned, taught by my grandmother, for 3 years before she passed away. I’m interested in saving as much money as I can on our groceries. Our daughter and grandchildren live with us and at 63 I just have begun cooking from scratch starting with sourdough and yeast fed bread. Saving money is why I started but it is growing from there. Thank you so much for sharing your family goals with us. ❤️
I’d be careful doing this too often, boiling water may wear out the silver properties much quicker.
Enjoyed the video from another 7a East Tennessee grower.
You can rinse out the buttermilk in the KitchenAid as well. Just pour in some ice water, rinse and repeat until the water is clear. This way you waste less water and don't have to do it by hands.
Very interested in how the training has been going. Seems he’s probably 2 by now. We also got an LGD (Karakachan) to guard our poultry and he’s almost 1 now. Feel free to reach out to us if you wanna chat more and trade any tips.
I tried this in my Kitchen aid mixer and it never got past whipped cream what did I do wrong
Same here. I tried several times and all I did was make a mess and some whipped cream that didn’t hold its shape. I’m still doing the shake method 🙁
amazing! How long does it keep in the fridge?
You have so much great information! You should write a book
How's it going? What are you excited about growing this year?
I live in East Tennessee also. And I’m just now sitting down to plan my garden for the spring for the first time. I will also have a lot of tomatoes because I can just sit and smell tomato plants all day long. 😂 I love how they smell especially in the summer.
Youre an awesome teacher - thanks for making that enjoyable to watch/listen to
❤❤❤👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🙏😍😍😍
Do you have dwarf trees? Where can I find the best selection near Bristol, TN?
I bought a couple at Tractor Supply back on June also Lowes has them during that time.
we just moved to northeast tennessee, so might be too late for us now
Wtf. Why all vids say heavy whipping cream but yet after it's turned into butter they say butter milk. Smh. It's still heavy cream obviously wasted 6 bucks not really ill find some recipe that uses buttermilk
You will never churn
Is the scaper attachment better or needs to whisk?
This is fantastic! I did this today with another video but yours is more informative! It is so easy to make butter and buttermilk. And both are expensive! Thanks!
With such lush gardens do you get a lot of snakes in there ?
Lids to tight but you tried
Has anyone tried using this method for cleaning your microfiber? I don't have stinky microfiber cloths but I would love to sterilize them with boiling. But I'm afraid it would ruin the cloths if I boil them...
How is the air going to get away with the lids tight? What happened to finger tip tight or water bathing?
i saw another video of someone also using a mixer to make butter and instead of washing the butter manually she simply poured out the buttermilk and added cold water into the mixing bowl. then she just used the mixer again to remove any remaining buttermilk, changing the water out until it was clear.
Excellent! Do you culture the buttermilk?
Miss seeing your growth! Continual prayers to you and your family. God is Sovereign!!! 💗
Iam using half n half will this make butter
He’s so cute! We have a 3mo LGD we are hoping bonds with our poultry and then sheep as we add them. Do you have an update on him? How is it going?
Now that some time has passed how has the training been? I just got my first LGD for the exact reason that you did, people think I’m crazy
I hope you would update this summer, even if it is ugly because of busy family life. That is reality.
New to your channel because I am searching for potasha gardens as we try to figure out a new garden space design for next year.
I got some great ideas from you. 😀
Hi Ashley, just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and praying for you all! You are missed 🙏❤️😘
Thumbs up, commenting and watching to make sure my subscribe sticks!
Hello I enjoyed this video and as far as the green peppers, Have you tried to just grow them inside.
Hello Ashley, 🦋 I just came over from Jill's channel and subscribed. Looking forward to watching your content. God Bless. 🌻
From one Ashley to another, I miss ur videos!! 😩 First time gardener here…in desperate need of all the knowledge! hoping to see you all again soon! 💕
Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to make this this video! I'm making butter for the first time today and you've made this so simple! God bless!!
Really nice looking place you kids have there. And...your Dexter family milk cow is beautiful. Really typifies the coloring for that breed. Good luck to you with your homestead.
I am in Kingsport in East Tn and I have a city farm as I call it but I do the raised bed gardens myself but my issue is our area gets a lot of rain and does a lot of damage to my tomatoes with cracking and splitting so this year I am going to try and grow them in the green house and control the water.
