Jenn Buys A House
Canada
Приєднався 17 лют 2023
This channel exists for two reasons - hopefully to help me save up to buy a fully detached house of my own, while documenting the process/progress, and secondly, I hope to inspire others that it's possible to achieve your dreams.
Join me on this journey? I'm going to make it as fun as I possibly can.

The Dark Side of Job Hunting

I'm 30 Days into My JOB HUNT and Here's What's Happening

In today's video, I try some new things. For one, I put on a microphone to see if it sounds better. For another, I tried different lighting (I really hate lighting). And finally, I tried a new thumbnail design (I also hate creating thumbnails hahaha)! From Full-Time to Fired in 2 Months What Went Wrong?

Yup, I got fired again. This one was a bit of a mess, and I really don't feel like I was given a fair shake, but dem's da brakes, I guess. I remain hopeful that I'll find something, and that I'll at least be approved for the pittance that is EI (employment insurance). Until then, I am throwing my resume at everything and hoping something good sticks! I do apologize for taking so long to upload ...

Good luck, Jenn! Can't help notcing you really seem to be enjoying the sewing... That's been clear in a few videos now.. ;-) Would love a sewing video if and when you can find time! Also sending prayers you get that job 😄
Good luck! Lovely to see you sewing - I hope it brings you some relaxation! Sending prayers your direction. Thanks for the updates - it's nice to know there are others nearly my age also looking 🙂
p.s. I was just looking at my emails (Indeed - jobsboard) and I happen to have been sent news of a remote medical transcriptionist job by a company called PHSA in BC and another one remote called Leading Edge Diagnostic services based in Ontario. Didn't look at the rest but they're there and they seem to pay ok too. Thought of you 😀
Thanks! I can't spend an entire day typing. My wrists and elbows can't handle that, sadly :(
Hi Jenn! Good to meet you! You were on my fyp and I’m subscribed now. I’m sorry that this is happening to you and it seriously sucks. I’m in my early 50’s and my husband is 62 and got laid off this past May and I’m sure you can imothe situation we may be in now since he’s not working yet. My worst fear is this is it. We are both losing the fight. We have an almost 18yr old still at home . I am disabled and haven’t been well enough to work a physical job since 2006. It’s so frustrating and scary & hard. I m thinking of you and will catch up on any other parts of your channel as I want to get to know all the newer ladies that have begun channels the past 3-6 months as I’m considering it myself asap just don’t know what the heck I’m doing . I’d like to network and be supportive like UA-cam was when I was before the bulk of the worst of my health issues began in 2011, I stopped creating videos…..in 2012. I’m on the spectrum & ADHD& auditory processing disorder (don’t have the $2,000 to get diagnosed or the $ for the therapy even though it’s fixable ❣️❣️)as are all 3 of my kids , but my youngest is the least affected and can workin public Sorry if I’m not making much sense, please reach out if you need support. I’m on IG. And I’m shy but ooooohyou are in Canada I just heard you say! lol I don’t know why that always makes me feel positive. O I’m artsy fartsy and even though I’m severely depressed and dealing with physical health issues . I would like to know whatever you are willing to share. See it’s 5:00 am right this minute. Thinking of you dear Jenn🫶🏼 Kimberly. P.s you’re correct (Ottawa does suck!!!)
Thanks for your comment! I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It's really brutal living in Canada right now. Sure, we have 'free' healthcare, but our social programs need an enormous revamp, as they are not serving us at all!!
How did your one month youtube fast go? Did you notice changes in your dopamine?
I have a video coming up on that :)
Sorry about your troubles. Please don't ever feel like you need to apologize to anyone about your posting schedule. Life happens and you cant always upload when you want. That's why i never promise anything like that to my audience, whether it be here or fb or Instagram. I post when i post and if they stuck around great, if not, oh well, but no apologies needed. I hope you find something soon, having no income can be very stressful.
Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate them.
You seem very kind Bridget. Lovely response to Jenn. I agree with your sentiments for her. Nice to meet you. Warm regards, Kimberly.
I was based in the UK back then. UK Transcription pays quite well - they may recruit internationally - a lot don't pay much so be careful of that. Another good offshoot is proofreading. Plus it's not just 911 who do emergency call outs, it's also old people and disabled people who are on the end of a personal emergency alarm (but also includes some night work) - I used to do that, too. Try a few things at once - the worst is not being paid much for what you do. Personally, I'm still with Amazon on nights in Canada... it's okay money (if you do that, do FC centre not delivery centre). Good luck!!
I'm afraid medical transcription has gone down in need by a lot. Most of it is auto generated, sadly. I also can't type for that many hours in a day, it's really bad for my shoulders. I am hopeful that I pass my medical terminology exam today, and that'll hopefully open up a bunch of work I did not qualify for previously!
@@jennbuysahouse Good luck with the exam!
Aww... Really sorry to hear you've not had an easy time... Have you thought about medical transcription from home? Personally, I tried it, it's not easy but... Plus I love your sewing creations - the links you mentioned might be nice, too 😉 You're so talented it pains to see you treated like that! 💜
Hi Kristin. I’m looking for work I can do from home. I can type pretty decent (better on my laptop than text lol. Are you able to join the network I’d love to begin with ladies in the 40-65+group who are some new to creating videoed etc and share how I can begin again and hopefully succeed to large enough extent that it helps others and my own mental and physical well being too. Also to be a support/etc to you or anyone else new to creating a channel first or second time? What does transcription entail? Do I need extra schooling ? Also Amazon jobs working remote does that exist? Is that what you’re referring to? Please let me know if you receive this message. I’m desperate for recourses and to stop being a disabled prisoner indoors for the remainder of my days without fulfillment or sunshine, positivity, enjoyment, friends, a career/job/vehicle, etc. Sincerely, Kimberly.🌸
Hope to see you back some day soon and hope you've been enjoying your break 🙂
Bring your phone with you and take videos outside. Take videos of the ocean, the flowers you see, the sunshine, etc. All your videos do not have to be in that same room. What you're feeling right now, happens to me every winter. I hate winter and get the winter blues all the time. It's tough, but you can get through this. Your plan yo get out this weekend is a good one 👍
Good for you I hope you have a lovely time! I got my colored pencils out the other day btw… was great … 😊
Awesome! I broke out the gouache last night and had a great time!
I'm wondering if the fact I worry I have egocentric bias which I may project on to others may may I may choose to watch this channel?
Hmm. I don't know if the typos are throwing me off, but I am not understanding your meaning. I try my best to keep myself in check, and find that I am not worthy far more than I find that I am. I do not want to project to others that I have a huge ego, though there is something to be said for putting yourself on YT, I suppose. Are you saying that watching my gross body accomplish a thing gave you an ego boost?
@@jennbuysahouse Not at all. Nobody's body is gross. Our bodies are made of atoms that have been around since stars burst and they help us get all the things done we need done ... I'd like to see your channel get somewhere. What you are doing is a vlog. That's okay, too.
Hey Jenn, have you thought about live streaming on UA-cam as a way towards monetization? There are a huge number of people that scroll through the live streams and I think it would be a great way to get exposure. You could work on your art or just talk about something that interests you.
I have thought about that...just not sure anyone would show up!
I'm really happy to hear the news of your plans. I can kind of see why you thought it might benefit you to read out that stuff now... In the meantime, have you thought about putting up an art video, or a video editing video while you complete your course? ... Personally I'd love to see something like that. I have a course starting soon, too... ;-) Art-related, I'm just not as good as you... 😀
I really appreciate that...I'm actually planning an art related video right now, I'm just having a hard time figuring out the angles and sound and what not. I've never thought about a video editing video, since I don't make a lot of changes, other than editing for time reasons! What course are you taking?
Sorry, but I've noted in one of your other videos you already have $1,100 a month coming in from some kind of permanent cheque thing, and your outgoings are 2,500 a month, so you neeed to make only about 1,400 bare basics per month to get through. You already have a part time job which should be doing some or all of that for you. So you may need a bit extra, or just to cut back your spending. Your perspective might need looking at first... Then get some help sticking to a budget... I note you say you spend a lot on art supplies... Well... Just put that in your budget too, and stick to it. Easy - the life of your dreams is on your doorstep, leaving you free to create a UA-cam channel other people might share an interest in watching ;-) Not reading out medical terminology! I think it's vidIQ people use to see what other people are researching on UA-cam to find out what might make a good idea for a video to make.
I do, and that $1100 covers my rent, and a bit of my car payment, but nothing else. To cover the rest of the car payment and my bills, I need quite a bit more. I really don't think I've been doing the math right, at all. I really enjoy making videos, I'd just rather monetize sooner rather than later :)
Reading medical terminology might be interesting for you but not for many other people, so I switched off. It looks like somebody called Sarah gave some very good pointers on yesterday's video. The drive to monetize is not supposed to be easy. I'm sure some people could easily post every day for 100 years and not monetize if their content is not what other people can find any interest in. Very best of luck though.
Hi Jenn. It looks like you’ve been struggling for a while, and I would like to try to help you out. That being said, most people really hate my help because I give practical, honest, and logical advice. I think that trying to help people actually reach their dreams, is kinder than cheering someone on down a path that doesn't actually lead anywhere. Most people think it's kinder to give blanket encouragement. If you want some real, actual helpful feedback and ideas to help you accomplish your dream of home ownership, please consider the following. If you would rather not, that's okay too. I like your idea of a drive to monetize. That's great. But reading medical terminology isn't niche. It's just going to be excruciatingly boring. You may actually lose subscribers by doing this and your views will most certainly go down. The reason your video about getting fired got so many views (comparatively) and your initial videos got so many more than your current ones, is your initial videos were relatable on a human level (a big life event change) contained a clear goal (your desire to own a home) or was interesting. If you want to increase your views and subscribers, you need to provide content people actually want, or content people can get behind and feel like they're a part of. In short, you need a much better game plan. Secondly, you need to also be aware that gaining a lot of money from UA-cam monetization, enough to buy a home for instance, or even to quit your day job, is about as likely as winning the lottery, even if you do it all perfectly. If you are doing a UA-cam channel because you love it, then do it. If you're doing it to make enough money to reach your income goals, there are much better ways you should definitely consider, because this way just isn't one of them. Same with your art work. It's absolutely beautiful. Honestly. I think your art work is lovely. And I'm sure your jewelry will also be very lovely. Lovely enough for someone to buy, certainly. But buying art is a luxury. It's not something people need. And you need (or at least want) to make more money. Unless you can convert your art hustle into a service oriented hustle, wherein people who are trying to make money themselves, look for you to help them make their own money (think book illustrator, logo designer, etc.) then it's going to be very hard to make more than some extra pocket money from even the most beautiful art. There's already so much beautiful art to be had, so many competitors, so few people with extra money to spend on it. In short, the odds are stacked against you. Even now, you're also competing against AI, so even the service oriented art hustles that I mentioned above, are also a real hard go now days. The reality is, people pay people to do the boring things, the "have to be done" things, the usual things. That's where the money is. Sometimes not a lot of money, but there's more money there than in the fun and creative things, in average. I know you've been applying to loads of jobs in your area without getting much back in return for your efforts. I used to work in career services, both helping people get hired as well as hiring others, so I can give you a few tips to get those call backs. 1. Make sure you send a tailored resume to every job you apply to. As though the resume you are sending was made specifically for that specific job. 2. Keep your resume to one page. 3. Have the skills required for the job you're applying for, using some of the specific wording used in the ad to get your resume past the bots. 4. Make sure your contact information is up to date and included both a phone number and an email at least. 5. Make sure your voicemail is professional and isn't full. 6. For any job you actually want, do yourself a tremendous favor and include a cover letter. If you don't know how to write one, research this. Even those jobs that require a cover letter, rarely get one. When you send one in, introducing yourself, explaining why you want the position, why you'd be a great fit for it, what you have to offer the company/employer, etc., it gives you a tremendous advantage over the other applicants. I'm an American, so I don't know how the job boards work in Canada, but here, there are regular job boards people usually look at, and there are the "other job boards" that don't get nearly as many applicants because people simply don't know they exist, because those boards are where those types of jobs are required to post in. For example, to get a job in primary schools here, you have to find the website where all the educationally based jobs are posted, which is an edu site. If you want a job with the county, you have to find the county websites career opening website. If you want to work for the state, you have to find their website. And on and on. You avoid a lot of fake job postings that way too, and there are fewer applicants because those boards aren't the general one people go to to find any old job. Think of all the job sectors you have locally, and find out where those sectors post their open positions. (If you haven't already done so). The next part I wanted to go over, was helping give you some good ideas for how to actually reach your home ownership goal, but until you have a reliable stream of income that exceeds your base line living expenses, there's not too much point in delving into that just yet. Right now, I think your best bet if you're truly focused on reaching your home ownership goal, is to maximize the use of your time as best as you can with that goal in mind, and to find a full time job that will give you a steady financial footing. Since interpersonal interactions seem to also be a struggle for you, (no shade, you've mentioned it yourself a few times) you will want to either zero in on a job working with much younger people (like children), a more solo oriented job (some science based jobs, some public works based jobs, some IT jobs), or a job with people who are similar to yourself. Alternately, you may want to devote some study time to developing positive interpersonal interactions. (It's a struggle for many people, myself included). I hope even some of this helps. Best of luck to you in your home ownership goal.
All of that is very helpful! I do already include a tailored resume and cover letter, unless the job specifically says not to (and some government jobs won't even look at one, so I don't bother). Here, to work for the City Of (insert city name here), you'd go to a website that aggregates all those posting into one. I've been on it multiple times. I'm also checking the health authority websites, BC and Canada Public Service job sites, and many more. I really appreciate all the time you put into that. TBH, I'm kinda hating saying all the terminology, and editing the video SUCKS. I'm happy that you've given me a reason to stop LOL
I’m glad it had at least a few helpful things in it. I really hope your dream of owning a home comes true. Cheering you on from America!
Congratulations on 69 subs. NICE! Living in an EV would be a lot harder than an ICE unless you had a reliable place to park/charge.
Thanks! I took a screenshot so I could use it for Sunday's thumbnail :)
Even though BC is a cashless society for the most part, it varies in other parts of the world. Earlier this year I spent 3 months in St. Vincent & The Grenadines and it's very rare to find a business that will accept plastic. Not even the darned ferries. Cost me $129 CASH each way between St. Vincent and Mayreau because the ferries don't take cash. I hated carrying hundreds of dollars around on me or hidden in my room. I've been hanging in England and travelling around Europe since May and some places take cash only and don't take credit cards and on the flip side, some places refuse to take cash. In other words, in other parts of the world, cash is king!
"Sorry for the clickbait-y thumbnail, I just don't have the energy right now" try smiling
Good luck at the Fair!!
Thank you!
The modern meaning of "Cash is King" is it's paid in full debt free. This means never carrying a balance on the credit card and never over-drafting.
I know, I was just trying to make a point :)
First video I've seen from you. Subscribed. I like you, you seem like my kinda people :) Can't wait to watch more from you.
Yay! Thank you!
Awesome video! Keep up your positive attitude and push. I do think your video could use some volume, it came in a bit quiet for me after the video I just watched but hey great work. The green screen usage is so OP. If you ever need royalty free music that’s what we do.
I'm always worried I'm too loud, interesting.
This is very interesting! I had no clue that a channel creator had access to so much information and so many details-- it is almost creepy. I can see why you wouldn't have time to look over this page on a daily basis. Thanks for sharing this.
Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? I know the point is to help you figure out your audience, but still, it's seriously in-depth!
Great job Jenn, keep it up! You'll be at 100subs in no time.
I like the bathroom because it is the smallest room to scrub and clean and the results are so satisfying. Enjoy your extra day off on this holiday weekend!
Sounds like you want to explore your lifestyle options. I agree with Janeexplains below - vlog of you exploring your options for your new identity. If all of us only lived by our own routine in life, who would make sure we didn't have sewage in the streets? Have you thought about trying Uber? Jasper needs help - perhaps you can make some art to help them ? Your work seems to have a very Maud Lewis look to me ;-) Have you looked at Viktor Frankl? He may help inspire you through your current times 😛
Darlene Michaud's vlog does well. She also has a creative side - quilting and fabric sales to support it. Best luck ;-) X
Huh, I've never seen Maud Lewis' work before, it does look a lot like mine! Crazy!
Dang, I'd be happy with 175k subs! Thanks for letting me know, I'll watch some of her videos and see what people like about her. I think I'll likely have to change the name of the channel to my name, because JBAH isn't really what I'm using this channel for anyway!
I love your enthusiasm. Please don’t lose that momentum. Keep it up! It’s gonna pay off.
Thank you! I was reminded yesterday why I want this to work so badly. It helped me refocus!
Hi Jenn, dry cracked lips could be caused by a B12 deficiency. Also, if you need to take iron pills try Feramax. They are easier on your stomach.
I am headed to the lab this morning for a bunch of different tests on my blood, one of which is b12. I don't eat a lot of meat these days, so I know that's part of it. I can't wait to see what the results are, that should help me decide on a direction :)
Don't give up Jenn!
Where is the oil sis? The oil would have stopped those eggs from sticking. Keep going, you're doing well.
Thanks for the support! I used butter, I just forgot to show it. I like the crusty stuff, so I don't want it to slide around. That probably makes me weird. lol

Don't you just love the assemble it yourself furniture? You get a bunch of parts and a picture manual with few to no words and basically it is good luck from that point forward! Hopefully the new shelf unit will be a useful addition. See you tomorrow!
This one had lots of words, but they weren't well thought out. Thankfully, I'm logical enough that I was able to figure it out. I think I've spent more time assembling Ikea furniture! This really wasn't that bad :)
Yay for cooler weather! We are experiencing it also, thanks to "a Canadian air mass" according to our local weather people--so thank you neighbors to the North! As a person with no drawing talent, I would like to see you create a video of you painting some of your whimsy art work creations. See you tomorrow!
Girl you are preaching to the choir. I am going through the same thing. Go hard with your this side hustle. You got this!!! You can just Vlog your day and the things that you are doing,
Can you tell me what does it take to get monetized? Is it the number of subscribers or the number of views? Your overall monthly expenses are not crazy out of this world and you didn't touch on what your current job pays. I am guessing that you are going to have to continue working a job of some sort while you build your art work business and chase the UA-cam monetizing. If you don't have any other debt, like credit cards, student loans and such, you actually could achieve your goal faster than you realize.
To be eligible for monetization you have to have 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours.
The only way to have each day your own is to get debt-free and start saving. That’s what I did and it was so worth it. Good luck!
What on earth is EL besides the name of the God of Israel?
It's EI not EL - it just looks like that because of UA-cam's unfortunate choice of font. It stands for Employment Insurance.
What on earth is EL besides the name of the God of Israel?
You are correct that it is over consumerism, the buy this, buy that, this is better, no, this is better! and it is fueled by social media just as you said. Our world has become impulse driven and leads many to over spend if they are unable to look away and ignore the constant bombardment of advertising. I find I often watch a you tube video and am really enjoying the topic and then they pause "to thank the sponsor of todays video" and proceed into a 2 minute advertising talk about the "product", which of course they got free to try and use and then promote, oh, and if you use their link below you will get 20% off your order!! Sending you love from the states!
At 2:07 - have you tried paper making or book binding? Nothing wrong with having tried lots of hobbies. You've just made the classic mistake of not starting where you are, with what you've got, or otherwise learning to take things slow, meaning you spent a lot of money you'd otherwise have spent on something else by now if not on that ;-) X
I'm really happy to hear your fabulous news, Jenn! ☕♥
Hey because you are in Canada does not mean anything trust me it's the same in the United States. I live in Texas and I am struggling right now no money no work no car no anything!!!!! The struggle is very real!!!😢😢
Hi, Jenn! It has been my experience in life that impulse buying and overspending is a sign of turmoil due to depression, ADD, or other emotional issues. You have been through a job loss and the threat of keeping a roof over your head and losing your beloved cat, which can also add to any unresolved segments of your life. Put the credit card away as it is only giving you a temporary "high" and watching you in this video I feel the pain and remorse you are feeling from using that credit card. It is time for a reset to clear your mind/body so you can move into the next chapter with a fresh start. Perhaps starting a daily gratitude journal could allow you to see your successes and chart your growth. Please know I come from a place of warmth and support, I want to see you succeed.
Iconic mug. ETA: just saying right off the hop. Now listening. Really enjoy your uploads.
Thank you for saying that! It's my favourite mug :)
Backwoods people! Seriously what a jerk thing to say. You have no idea! Unfortunate that people refer to it as Canada's Texas..What's that supposed to mean. Let me guess some things about you since you are being so rude to Albertans. You probably have blue hair and voted liberal.
I have lived there. I know exactly what I'm talking about, but thanks! There's a reason places get reputations. They aren't invented from nothing.
everyone knows this scenario, no need to flog a tired old story.
no need to comment. everyone does NOT know this about Canada... geesh.
why would you mention the furnishings?
Thanks, Jenn! Trust me, it is also also pricy to get a house where I am in the U.S. Homes around me that were selling for $70,000 tops in 2018-2019 are now going for $165,000 and beyond. These are 800 square foot homes built in the early 50's, with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath, and trust me, they aren't in perfect condition for that price. It is tough for anyone trying to get a home, young, older, divorced, widowed, etc. Interesting video to see what is going on in Canada.
