South Maui LAVA FIELDS! La Perouse Bay, Hoapili Trail. Rainbows and the most beautiful SUNSET ever!
This moderate South Maui hike travels along historic trails amid the harsh lava from one of the last eruptions on Maui in 1790. This Nā Ala Hele trail was improved to the eight-feet wide path you see today in 1824 by Governor Hoapili. Hundreds of years earlier, the path was the King’s Trail or Ala Loa built by King Piʻilani and his son that circled around much of the island. This hike travels to Kanaio Beach, where the trail encounters private property. It’s also possible to do a shorter portion of the hike described below. Many people walk a short portion of the trail and turn back.
Trailhead: From where Hwy. 31 comes to a dead-end in South Maui, turn right onto Wailea Ike Drive, then quickly turn left onto Wailea Alanui Drive. Follow Wailea Alanui as it turns into Mākena Alanui (also Mākena Road). Drive carefully down this very narrow road taking care to pass other vehicles when the road is only one lane. Mākena Road ends at trailhead parking. The road deteriorates as you get nearer to the trailhead, but it is accessible to two-wheel drive vehicles.”

The coarse red sand and cliffs contrast with crystal blue waters, making it absolutely breathtaking! The cliffside trail can be dangerous, especially when wet, so proceed with caution. Wife and I did it in our mid-30s. It was nowhere nearly as crowded as now. The cables had maybe 6 other people on them. Started at 5AM and returned almost exactly at 5PM. We were very fit and still beat at the end. Would never do it again. Half Dome actually looks way better from the Valley not from the top.

Most people posting aren't in half dome climbing shape. I'm sorry. Your exhausted before getting to Half Dome then that's your cue not to do it and people telling you ahhh, you almost made it. Just curious, did you do any kind of homework on what it takes to climb Half Dome. Just getting to Nevada Falls is a bear. Nice try but if you want a better hike try either North Dome, or maybe Cathedral rock. Those two hikes are much shorter but still give a good exercise and a rewarding view at the end.
