    Do you prefer a prime lens for interior photography, or would you rather use a zoom lens for this purpose? I'm considering buying either the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 or the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 for this type of photography. What do you think? Can anyone help me decide which would be the better choice? Are there any other lenses I should consider? Im already have a nikon z 24-70mm 2.8.

    Hello Jonathan, First of all, I want to say that I’m really impressed with Matterport, especially the ease of using the app to create virtual tours. It’s a pleasure to work with this technology, and the results are truly impressive. However, I have a major issue with the current licensing model, particularly when it comes to the long-term costs. In my case, I aim to focus on scanning hotels and restaurants, adding tags, and delivering the finished tours to my clients. These clients want to embed the tours on their websites and keep them available there permanently. The problem is that as soon as I create, for instance, 20 tours and hand them over to my clients, I have to pay increasingly higher monthly fees just to keep them hosted. From a business perspective, this becomes unsustainable in the long run, as my clients and I cannot justify these ongoing costs indefinitely. My goal is to create around 20 tours per month. Is there any way to deliver these tours to my clients without being burdened with continuously rising costs? For example, through a one-time license fee or a more flexible pricing model? Additionally, I wanted to ask if you are aware of alternatives to Matterport that offer similar app-based functionalities but work with more flexible licensing models. I’ve heard of platforms like 3DVista Virtual Tour Pro, EyeSpy360, and Metareal Stage, which seem to provide interesting options, and I would like to know if you have any recommendations. I’m looking forward to your response and hope that there’s a solution that can work sustainably for smaller providers like me in the long term. Thank you in advance!

    This is a non-related question I want to ask. What is the best way to get clients in 2025? Most videos are based in the US and their advice is irrelevant to the UK estate market. I love this camera and never thought about using it for real estate, I use it mainly for behind the scenes when I'm out and about photographing architecture around London.

    Wow, thanks! My entire channel (up to this point) was shot with an Akaso action camera because, (five years ago, starting my studio business with my pandemic relief checks) after investing most of my budget in a professional level, Zoom sound system, shotgun mic and related supporting equipment, that’s all the budget I had left for my camera! I couldn’t believe the results it achieved, but yes, edge-warping was a fact of my video-recording and post-production life. Still, I grew to absolutely love that thing and the angles and gib and boom shots I could get with it on the end of my microphone boom pole attached to my fluid head tripod!. That little champ of a camera finally pooped out about six months ago, and so I’ve been in the market for a new action camera. This looks like a great one!

      I'm not sure exactly, but looking at the storage data on my app for the last 3 tours I have shot using the X4, they total 1.67GB. They are all 2 bed apartments about 500-800 sq ft. So I'd say smaller tours will be about 0.5gb and larger ones might be around 1gb. Once you have e uploaded them, you can delete them off you phone app to free up storage, as they will be stored in your Matterport account once uploaded.

    I shot Flambient for 5 years, but here is the reality. Let's say you do 4 shoots in 1 day. If you average around 30 photos per-shoot, at about 2 minutes per edit, that means you will be spending 4 straight hours of editing every night. If you book a lot of shoots 4 hours of editing every night gets very old, and makes it so you have no life at all after you get done shooting. This isn't even counting if you have to put together videos, 3D tours, etc.

    • @jonathanshilton

      I agree. It's a lot of work in the evenings, and there have been times when I nearly packed it all in. I started outsourcing a lot of my editing during busy periods and when I had videos to edit. It might mean bumping the price up a bit, or if you shoot videos and virtual tours too, this can help cover the cost. Outsourcing really helped get my life back in the evenings. My wife is also going to start working with me soon, as she will be doing the editing to keep it all in the house, which will be a big help. Hi! I have used Insta350 x4 with matterport pretty recently. Still find it the best solution in my given conditions and budget but i have stumbled upon couple of issues. First is that the end up result came out slightly less sharp as the one on your example. I have redone the same unit two times to ensure i didn't mess up with setting or anything else. Done in soft sunlight, no direct beams, lens guards were off and it was set for hdr 72 mp yet still looking less res and more blurry. Maybe you can give any advice on how to enhance it Another issue which is more concerning is that the colors after matterport processing came out dull and desaturated though when opening the raw files on the x4 itself they are more saturated, did you stumble upon that problem? Since Matterport with X4 is a pretty specific combo i couldn't find answers online so i hope we can exchange experiences

They can then paste this to listing sites like Zillow and Rightmove as well as their own websites. There is also very little editing involved, so it's very simple once you learn the basics. This would have been a game changer for me if the stupid Matterport app wouldn't stop losing connection with my Insta360! I've managed to get a few photos taken after multiple presses of the shutter button but more times than not, the connection will be severed before being sent to the Matterport App. I've literally tried will holding the phone to the back of the camera and it STILL loses connection. What I thought would be an amazing new service I could offer my clients has once again become just a dumb dream.

    Hello Jonathan, thank you for the video, I have a question. I have a chance to buy used insta 360 one RS 1-inch for the price of brand new insta 360 x4. What should I buy if I want to shoot virtual toors with matterport? Another question, I came acrooss some comments on YT, that Matterport is limiting the pictures taken with insta 360 cameras to just 18 MP and that it doesn’t matter what setings you choose e.g. Hdr or so, that it still uses default settings. Do you have any experiences with this? Thank you for the answer.

    • @jonathanshilton
      @jonathanshilton 27 днів тому

      If you can get the RS 1 inch at a good price then go with this as it has a one inch sensor so it should be better in low light and get better detail. The X4 is a great option though too. You're right about the 18MP issue, how ever this was a problem with the X3 and previous cameras. The X4 shoots at 72MP with Matterport, so no problem there.

      I did find it a bit slower than the Theta Z1. The z1 took about 5-10 seconds to process. The X4 took more like 20-30 seconds I found. I'm hoping that might get a bit quicker with a firmware update.

    what settings do you use? I have sony zve10 ii with 26MP and I shoot with tripod 10mm lens at F11 iso 100 in aperture priority mode 3 EV 3 bracket, BUT my windows dont look very good like you know that super clear exposure that shows the outdoor like there is no window at all there how do i do that or is it just the maximum capibility of my cameras? I got very good images but wanted to see if i can do something to get even more better looking photos, Thank you :)

    • @jonathanshilton
      @jonathanshilton Місяць тому

      Hi, I don't bracket when shooting Flambient? Are you shooting bracketed HDR and merging the images, as this can result in the windows not looking great. My settings are f8, ISO 400 (this allows more natural light and flash on the snesor) and I adjust the shutter speed to let more light in and adjust the flash amount depending on how dark the room is. I take an ambient shot first, then the flash shot, then I would take a window pull shot if required by raising the shutter speed and pointing the flash at the window, so everything is clear outside and it is easy to edit in photoshop using darken mode with a brush and layer mask if the window is then bright because I have pointed the flash directly at the window. I will do a video about this soon. If you search for Nathan Cool's video about window pulls, this is how I learnt. Thanks for watching.

    What’s the advantage to using the Insta360 over your work camera when uploading to Matterport? I already have an A6700; would there be a significant workflow reduction to invest in the Insta 360 also?

    • @jonathanshilton
      @jonathanshilton Місяць тому

      You can only use 360 camera made by insta360 or ricoh with matterport software, so you can't use your sony a6700. Even if this was possible, there would be a lot of extra editing work to shoot 360 photos with a mirror less camera. In short, you will need to either purchase a 360 camera or one of Matterports own cameras.

      @@jonathanshilton Thanks; I guess I got confused at 8m45 when you said: “Everything here was shot with the zed 1…” which I interpreted to mean the Sony ZV-E1, which is camera I recalled that you use for interiors. But now I realize you meant the Ricoh model. I guess I’ve a good excuse now to invest in an Insta 360! They are on holiday sale at B&H for 75.00 off, so no time like the present to myself! Great video. I can’t see any reason to spend more for the more expensive cameras when the 360 could also be stuck on the end of a boom pole and used to get unusual perspectives, architectural details of high objects, and a bird’s eye perspective for certain scenarios.

    • @jonathanshilton
      @jonathanshilton Місяць тому

      It's best to shoot at a higher frame rate like 50 fps or 60 fps depending on which region you are in. This then allows you to slow the footage down and make it much smoother. If you slow 24fps footage it will look jumpy. You can shoot up to 30 fps 4k and 60 fps 1080p on the zv e10 I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      Unfortunately you can't edit the photos in terms of lighting or contrast and you can't upload photos not taken with the Matterport app. Everything has to be shot and uploaded using the matterport app. This makes for a quick work flow but doss have the drawback of not having the editing capability you might find using software such as Kuula. • @nelson_genao
      @nelson_genao 2 місяці тому

      I am working with a company, I use Kuula. The truth is that when I take the photo from Insta 360 I want to make my own modification or something similar, in how many functions both programs have their pros and cons, I mean in my case there is no winner, it is to offer the services as far as the client's reach is for the monthly subscription

    • @jonathanshilton
      @jonathanshilton Місяць тому

      It depends if you want a quick work flow or more control over your images. Matterport is very user friendly and quick to work with but you have little control over how the final images look. Kuula, you can edit your photos before uploading them, but this is obviously more time-consuming. Price might also be a factor, as you might find Matterport expensive if shooting a lot of spaces, but then you will be earning more. Personally, I like Matterport because of the quick workflow, and my clients like it too. Just make sure you have a decent 360camera otherwise it can look pretty bad. I suggest the ricoh theta z1 or the insta 360x4, unless you can afford matterports own cameras, the pro 2 or pro 3. Thanks for watching!

    ok i subbed to your channel, am just wondering, other youtubers said a million things needed to be done and many steps and software, such as a software to erase the tripod image, another (lightroom) for editting the image and colors, also a third one for denoising, you arent you going through those ? i am considering buying my first insta360 or use my pocket2 for now, and i hardly see anyone offering 3d virtual tours in Dubai, so i want to be among the few offering it, does the steps you explained are sufficient for a beginner service provider, and hope you can show us a more advanced workflow for example for fancy real estate and working with bracketing and HDR, thanks mate,

      @jonathanshilton 2 місяці тому

      Hi, thanks for watching and taking your time to comment. Sounds like you might do well if not many people are offering it in Dubai yet. I only use Matterport for virtual tours, and this software does all the processing for you, so it’s the easiest to use, but offers great results. As a beginner, I would go with this for ease of workflow. Matterport is also an industry leader in the field, so I find clients like to use it as they have heard of it. I’ve not done a lot of manual processing the HDR images for 360 tours, so I won’t be doing any videos on this for now. As I say though, you would be fine to use Matterport starting out to achieve professional looking results to send to the client.

    Nice, easy to understand, video. Thank you. I have spent the last 2 weeks experimenting with HDR, flambient and also HDR as the ambient shot and processing as a flambient shot. I found flambient to be the more successful approach, although HDR is appealing as it is so quick to shot and edit.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Flambient or HDR can look great if edited the right way. I tend to go with Flambient more as I find it easier to edit. It’s also not that much slower than HDR when shooting, once you get the hang of it. All the best!

    Have you always used flambient, or have you ever tried to use the in-camera, HDR-merging capabilities of say an A6000? I have been quite impressed with my 200 dollar, used, A6000 for its ability to take multiple exposures and give this picture to you in one raw or Jpeg file (or both). I was wondering if you knew how this might stack up against flambient for interiors? If nothing else, it could make for a good "spaghetti-western shootout."

    • @jonathanshilton
      @jonathanshilton 3 місяці тому

      The Sony A6000 would be fine for shooting Real Estate. Any camera made in about the last 10 years is fine, as long as it has at least 20 MP and also shoots RAW, which all these camera's do. I did a video about the Sony ZV-E10 and how this can be used to shoot real estate on a budget, and this camera has the same sensor as the A6000. I shoot a mixture of flambient and HDR, just depends on the lighting situation. I probably shoot about 80% flambient and 20% HDR, as I find flambient easier to edit and you have more control over the lighting. HDR merge can be ok in some instances, but when it's a dull day and you have a lot of differnet light sources in the shot, it can look a bit dull and have a lot of colour casts. Especially here in the UK, when half the year is pretty dull, so a flash is necessary for me a lot of the time. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

      I use the Godox AD200, with the Godox trigger. It’s a great flash, very powerful but not too big. I will do a video about flash guns and triggers at some point. I would definitely recommend get an off camera flash, as you will be able to light the room much better. Also handy for other sorts of photography you are doing.

    nice tutorial Jonathan! to remove color casts I recommend to use a hue/saturation layer in photoshop (selecting the color you want to remove in the properties panel and desaturating it) and mask the specific area (typically the ceiling or walls, this less destructive than using Lightroom which will affect all areas of the image)
