Perry the Platypus & Asexual Representation in Media: A Quick Clarification
Some guy re-clarifies something they said in their last video regarding everyone's favorite semi-aquatic, egg-laying mammal of action. He also does a quick overview of asexual representation in animation as it stands.

i am a trans nonbinary person with a dream of putting my characters into the world and this video encouraged me even more! i want more cartoons with lgbtqiapn+ characters who aren't just there for obligation, they are THE main characters and have arcs of their own! i will look forward to making it come true someday :))

the majority of the hate ghostbusters 2016 got iirc was more because it looked (and was?) mid after being in development hell for a long time, and about 30 years of the franchise being dormant, but i can pretty much guarantee you that if it had been made as an unrelated project with the same premise, it wouldn't have gotten much backlash.

Want to pause at 7:17 to say I laughed 3 times "from the show" so far (never heard of this show, likely due to being Disney and timing of show) 1. Recurring Racoon here made me laugh 2. Bag of flour made me laugh 3. script writer made me laugh Why, I don't know, but they did. No opinions at this time. Don't think it matters, and obviously represent only myself, but think information is nice soooooo I'm a [non-trans self identifying] "MtF" Asexual/Pansexual Nonbinary Tomboy who's a disabled veteran, 25, and had 7 [foster] children as a single mother. I watch[ed] a lot of animated shows. Alright, now to keep watching and maybe give an actual opinion LOL Pause again at 12:22, now I feel bad for laughing at #2 above 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 Wow that's awful and... I need some parallels to other "comedy" to see if I'm being biased, but gross. Pausing again at 13:20, I think it's the "lost train of thought" that made me laugh, since I did laugh. I'm likely just easy to make laugh which people have noted before. Pausing again 19:34, and going to sleep, but, while the... optics?... are really bad, I would say that dub-over is kind of funny. Usually things like that are. However I guess when combine with other things... optics are very bad. However that dub alone, meh, I mean it worked in my eyes.

hey i'm new to your content (yeah the lady killers video got me here) and it seems like you're mostly interested in cartoon media but i might be wrong so i wanted to give a small rec for a show heartbreak high there's an asexual queer man character that's handled very well in my opinion, he's openly saying he's romantically interested in people but doesn't like things going further and his struggles of trying to maintain a relationship with an allosexual person are handled realistically and well too!

I never knew that this spin-off existed. I am pretty sad that the creators of a show helped me be creative and also helped me find who I am (as Trans Masc/Agender- He/They/It). I watched it twice, one before coming out and one after coming out since I showed my younger cousin it. I always fear that my favorite creator or show will turn into something that harms communities. I always worry for my and others' safety in this country because of these harmful stereotypes that are shown in famous TV shows and that some normalize harming communities. It's like history is repeating itself... Sadly.

i really liked tootsie when i watched it a couple years ago. dont know how true this is, but i got the feeling that somewhere along the line the theme was obscured by either production or someone on the creative team, obscured by the politics at the time and/or by suggesting something about (the gravity of) transness that they were too afraid to out of fear of others reactions or what would happen when they find themselves agreeing with it. all i remember really is that wig-off scene on the soap opera at the end, the montage of tootsie being famous, and her interactions with the cast and crew of the soap opera as she rose to stardom. i loved those scenes because i so badly was rooting for dorothy/michael and for him to find a blooming comfort in being her. the only thing i really didnt like was how lacking in development some of the side characters were (especially the love interest). i think if i gave it a rewatch i would have a perspective more like yours, but for now i just wanted to share my thoughts since i was surprised at the tootsie mention lol

Well, in that one future episode. They said they got asked the question of "Will we ever see Perry get a girlfriend?" And the response was no. So that comment could be referring to that. He's also a semi-aquatic, egg laying, mammal of action. He has no time for relationships. Who knows, maybe he's neutered lol.

yikes you have a big problem with the episode yet you used homophobic language yourself...doesn't matter if you're lgbt, you're still homophobic and no better than dan or any of those other people. kinda deserve to feel hurt if you're hurting people just the same by being lgbtphobic. fucking bummer, dude. do your research and stop using slurs just bc idiots in 2024 never spent a single second living or researching life as an LGBT person before the 2010s. even after the 2010s, i was called the slurs that so many ppl claim aren't slurs now. they are. you saying they're not does not change history. just bc it's been years does not change damage or harm. please educate yourself, or don't make video essays trying to explain how smth is bad when you do...the exact same thing. you, dan, and anyone who aided in the production of that episode are disgusting and lgbtphobic. and yes, you can be a minority and phobic. shocker! did we forget ye west is a racist, and black? anyways, really disappointed with that, also the billy buffalo whatever was a stretch tbh. like...pretty big stretch. like ehhh. get off tumblr and do some actual research before you spout slurs, which i'm sure you'd die on the hill of it not being a slur despite me and many others now and in history being called the very word you said.

I hope something changes in Dan' shows because one of his children *might* be trans (on the personal tab on his Wikipedia it says one of his children now goes by Alex), and while I'm not comfortable searching more about a persons gender identity, especially if they're potentially still a child. So at the least it's a person going by a gender neutral name and at most a trans/nonbinary person. I hope this effects... something

something that just occurred to me: in phineas and ferb, they turned the entire concept of interpersonal relationships on its head, something that makes the show infinitely more interesting and memorable in milo murphy’s law, interpersonal relationships don’t really exist (outside of milo himself, but milo is a too flat of a character for this to mean much)

Dwampy, I will forgive you of all sins and transgressions if you hire me to write/draw for a special of the Phineas and Ferb continuation where Dakota and Cavendish realize they love each other and get married. They’re so gay coded it would be so awesome and cool for two prominent main characters to get married, especially since they’re male and the only gay rep in kids cartoons is like, some kid with two dads, cops, or both. It’s a reasonable conclusion to make looking at their relationship okay ALSO WE CAN MAKE PERRY THE PLATYPUS TRANSGENDER. WE CAN USE THE FACT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT CORRECT PLATYPUS ANATOMY AT THE TIME TO EVERYONE’S BENEFIT"

"too innocent" is often a point made in conversation about aro/ace people. I believe that the people making these comments often say this to infantilize them. For some reason straight people do this to distance themselves from the aro/ace people or LGBTQ+ people as a whole. I'm not aromantic or asexual, but I am autistic, and that rhetoric is thrown at us in a very similar way. When people think different, bigots distance.

i enjoyed your video and congratulations on coming out! I'm a femby myself and grew up in the 90s so i am kinda jaded to this kind thing in cartoons but I'm not gonna lie that did feel kinda crappy to watch. like right off the rip, the premise is just annoying. "if you were a woman this wouldn't be an issue " that's stupid. he would never have been the face of the franchise in the first place if he was a woman. and the writers had the girl say it too 🙄 and the smarmy way they portray the director as using diversity for marketing is extra insulting. like the diversity and representation isn't the freaking issue it's profit and focus on marketing that's the problem. they love recycling old franchises and those franchises were made when only cis white dudes were considered. so doing a race or gender swap is a convenient way of keeping a profitable franchise going and also get a wider audience (and also to deflect from the overwhelming whiteness of hollywood in general) I'm getting off topic. 😅 that song was kinda nasty. it really does go after things that im quite self conscious about particularly as a trans femme. like I'm not even against the jokes but like these jokes definitely don't come from a place of empathy.

i do agree in that it'd be really appreciated to have more asexual representation in media. a lot of people tend to confuse aro and ace or think that it is simply lack of sexual attraction at all instead of an entire spectrum due to how little representation there currently is TwT i havent come across myself with ace or aro representation in series, but probably my favorite one from media in general is the character Manami from the vn trilogy A Year of Springs _(spoilers: she finds out about what being aroace means in the story focused on her and tries to accept the fact that she is in fact both aromantic and asexual)_ especially as through her inner thoughts its shown an aspect that many people tend to overlook, that being that aromantic and asexual people also struggle with inner doubts and sometimes self-rejection. also i'd probably say that John Egbert also gives me strong aroace vibes as he seems to be somewhat oblivious whenever someone is interested in him and doesn't really seem to actually crush on anybody. most likely same situation with Jake actually (also also i do agree as well that it'd also be nice to have asexual representation not necessarily paired with aromantic since, while it's also nice, it's probably what causes so many people confusion between the 2)

Unrelated to the main topic, but Big Mouth as a whole has represented and discussed SEVERAL LGBTQ identities, even panseuxal??? And none of it is done through Death of The Author. It’s just never discussed because no one sane would watch Big Mouth. Rightfully so, the show is bad… In case you’re curious: transgender, gay, bisexual, pansexual, lesbian, kink, and ace rep has been directly discussed in the show.

I also don't like the way Peridot's aromantic identity and asexuality are treated either. This is because most attribute Peridot not fusing to the fact that she's aro-ace, but here's the problem with that: Fusion as a whole is treated as the fullest and most freeing form of love amongst gems, and while some of the gems express it through sxual love, it's not the *only* form of love expressed through fusion. As one of the S.U. creators put it very bluntly "fusion isn't purely an allegory for s3x, cuz if it was, it'd make every single time Steven fuses with one of his gem moms or his dad very weird. Not to mention Steven and Connie have fused multiple times at this point, and they're both minors." For this reason, saying the fact that Peridot can't and doesn't fuse is because she's aro-ace is saying Peridot can't feel love *at all.* However anyone who knows what being aro-ace means and anyone whose seen the show knows that said statement is false in both regards. Peridot does and still can show familial, maternal, and platonic love. Even if that doesn't include romantic or sxual love. If anything, the fact that she doesn't fuse is completely unrelated, and is more likely rooted in the fact that, up until she joined the gems, she was raised in a very closed off society that completely disapproved of *any* form of love, especially if it resulted in the fusion of two separate kinds of gems.

2:44 i'll never forget the time in the big hero 6 animated series where the creators were like "hey, this an action adventure show that's been going on for a while now. You know what a show like this 𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 needs? A forced Will They Won't They romance subplot that could straight up not exist and the show would just straight up be better because more time could go to further making the narrative better because we're definitely not going to put that time into making a *good* romance subplot either. But who to do it with? Oh! *HOW ABOUT WE CHOOSE TO MAKE THE ROMANCE SUBPLOT REVOLVE AROUND THE CHARACTER THE WE HAD HANG UP AN ARO-ACE FLAG IN THE FIRST MOVIE?"* What makes it even more worse was the first half of the entire subplot was spent around how Hiro thought it was creepy and weird that Carmen was writing self insert fanfictions with his superhero identity! Which means that up until the back half of the romance subplot, they could've still played it as " hey, this super creepy, I'm aro-ace and have been canonized that way since my debut, but like, we can still be friends," and none of the plot involving Carmen would even change!
