A Collect for St. John the Evangelist - Benedict Preece

I wrote this piece in memory of Fr. John Allan, who was a great support in my musical development and appointed me to my first organist role at St John the Evangelist Church, Ickham, Kent. The text is from the book of common prayer and is the Collect for St John the Evangelist. I had the great honour to play for John’s Requiem Mass in September 2022 in Plymouth Cathedral. The sketched this work...

Vraiment très beau !
@@lucedouard merci! :)
Oh to be in Lille to hear the beautiful music of Caritas and Ben's stunning new piece - worthy jumping on the train to go snd indulge! Good luck to all! X
I’m sitting in my room at ‘England’s Nazareth’ listening to stunning “Preece Piece” after “Preece Piece” and cannot find sufficient adjectives and superlatives for what I’m hearing. Benedict, yours is a God-given gift. Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you 🙏
Most certainly ‘lilting’. Gorgeous.
If only we had a choir, one that could do justice to this, then it would have been a stunningly beautiful inclusion to Benediction last month ❤
There’s a really wonderful choir in Baltimore - Dr Jordan Prescott is their Director - he found this on UA-cam and performed it recently :)
Oh, wow! ❤
Beautiful, rich harmonies, that make your spine tingle. Let's hope it can be heard in Canterbury very soon ... ❤
@@peterharnden7032 that’s very kind. Thank you 🙏
Sounds heavenly ❤
Fantastic I could listen to this all day !
what a beauty! what a magnificent composition! Congratulations Benedict: not only are the singers in your choir marvelous, your conducting is crystal-clear, and you're a talented composer I'll be introducing to France! Your recital as part of the Estivales de la Treille in Lille Cathedral was exceptional. Looking forward to hearing you again soon in Lille If I weren't working, I'd become a pilgrim and walk to Canterbury to hear you again and again.
Thank you so much!! We can’t wait to return next year!!
PERFECT!😊
@@79wingham thank you!

@@nicks40 there’s an idea! It has a variety of arrangements but not a choral version….yet 😅
Such a stunning piece of music. Bravo!

This one made me laugh. Thank you!
@@DG-zz6kp😂
Ben, that's really very pretty.
Thanks so much!
I love the soprano solo at the end 😍
Thank you! It’s such a joy to sing 🥰
Mr. Preece, the choir sang this again last night (to my surprise) at the Benediction following the Musical Oratory of Advent. Words cannot describe how beautiful this piece of music is when you hear it live, as I did. As they sang it, Sean slowed the pace gradually, throughout, with a clear decrescendo. By the end it was nearly pp, and the Amen then had a "< >". Truly incredible work, sir.
I am so deeply honoured that it was performed again. I heard Sean and the choir’s previous performance of it and was blown away by their beautiful interpretation. Thank you for letting me know that it was sung at the Benediction. One day I would love to come and hear the choir in person! Benedict
It is rather lovely
Thanks! Looking forward to Friday!!
Thought the last amen last night was stunning and so moving. And now I know that it is for Fr Allan too only improves my joy. "I’m grateful to the nonet of friends who met to sing through and recorded here using an iPhone." Astonishing too.
Thank you! And I’m glad you enjoyed the concert last night :)
@@benedictpreece Singing in 'The Kingdom' is a major highlight of my musical like so the Elagr was a wonderful reminder of a much loved work.

Theoretical 😎
Very good! Yes - I don’t think I can bring myself to really perform it, so “theoretical” is bang on 😂😃
@@benedictpreece Haha. Just came across your channel, your content is great. Love your Anglican Chant in F, and your setting of “Tell out, my soul.” 👌🏼

this is amazing! i always wondered if the first bar of the last line could start on Eb Major as opposed to minor, create a "full" Circle of Fifths? gorgeous harmonies nonetheless :D
Thanks 🙏

@@benedictpreeceWill do, thanks very much!
Absolutely gorgeous. Very nicely notated, love the little touches and attention to detail
Thank you so much!
Beautiful work. Sublime. I hear Purcell very much in this, as well as Byrd’s echo in the English Services. But mysteriously, I also hear the reaching chords and silences of Faure and Durufle. How very moved I am by this honest take, this severity in motion as one sits in the pew and wrestles on the grave matter at hand: if these words are indeed true, that it is the body and Blood of Jesus Christ Thomas wrote this hymn to, then it is Everything. Thank you for this.
