Essential Communications Gear for Practical Preparedness
Nice video! Like ur rims and tires. Jerry cana must on long trips/off roading. Keep us posted as you progress...
There is no real way that you can know what you will need. Factors that play into it are how far? is it reasonable to go? How long will I have to shelter? 8/ 12/ 24/ 36 hours. Type of reason? To start the journey, take what you need plus 1 day. But if you have to shelter light my not work, so pack heavy but carry what you need. All the gear in the world won't help if the basics are not readily at hand. Water source and place to keep safe.
Year's ago mine started out at 60 pounds, then i got it down to 40 pounds,, now it's at 35 pounds ,, i can hump it all day, but at 65 year's old i don't wanna !! So I'm back to testing and downsizing again,, really amazing just how little a person really need's..
My wife hates UA-cam. But she said to tell you thank you for making such a quick to-the-point video without all the rambling and "blah blah blah". You made your points and ended the video. Well done.
Paul: Are CB radio channels old school? And, could you do a video on your firearm's recommendation you listed in the download. I was wondering what your philosophy of use for each. Such as, lever action 30/30, 12 gauge vs 20 gauge, etc. Thanks.
All of my recommendations can be found here: paultmartin.com/the-ready-citizen-manual
@@paulmartin580 Thanks for responding. I have the download of the manual. My question and request is in regard to the firearm list on page 44. Why those calibers, those brands/models, etc. Recommend a first firearm for home defense, and so on that could be expanded on. Thanks.
@@gravewalker1632 at this point, given the massive demand for guns and ammo, you may find that you just have to take whatever you can get. The firearms in that manual have been chosen due to their reliability and relative ease of use.
@@paulmartin580 Okay, thanks....
3yrs old video I know but hey. 180 miles in 6 days isn’t really feasible. 20 miles a day would be great, over rough terrain 15 is more likely. So more like 10-12 days walking. Probably best to plan a route from likely places back to home and cache food and water half way along the routes. Then travel like an ultralight hiker with a good sleeping bag, not just a bivvy, so you can get decent sleep without a fire.
Practice makes perfect! 1st thing - ditch packaging!
Dude please not scream into the mic at the start of every sentence. Literally everytime you start a new sentence i have to turn down the volume, then turn it back up. Listen to your video, you will see what im talking about.
All you and Hodges do is put out FEAR. You working for DS?
I don’t know who Hodges is but I am certain PM is not a DS operative. He is on a list for certain, right below my name.
Thank you very much Paul. You are a great person for researching and condensing this vital info that we all need. Blessings on you and your family.
THANK YOU PAUL SO VERY MUCH FOE THE INFO. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SIR. CONNIE SUE FROM TOPEKA KS🙏❣️💗🍀😊👩🏻🦳
Based on everything you have read, would you avoid business travel to countries that have had low incidences of infected individuals i.e. Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea, France, Italy?
I would not fly internationally at the moment. I continue to fly domestically, but I am constantly looking to re-evaluate that based upon reports of what we are seeing here in the U.S. Given what appears to be a significant change in tone from the CDC regarding the probability of it spreading here in the U.S., I am operating under the assumption domestic air travel will be impacted as well.
@@paulmartin580 Thanks Paul!
@@paulmartin580 lol... I've already decided I'm not leaving my farm as of the end of this week. No more trips to town! And here y'all are talking about airplanes! Yikes. 👀 Stay safe!!!
I got my technician license over 30 years ago. It’s simple. All I did is study a book and took my test. I was 14. I’m sure it’s easier now. You probably can get all the material online and learn Morse code. I was 14 btw
I would love to know what all you kept to give the veiwers an idea to what to carry.
Cut the bullshit and get to what you have decided to keep - Rather than the x amount of minutes of what you are not keeping
Great Ideas man! good video. Liked and Sub'd
Hi Paul and thank you for the information. I am getting my Technician ticket in a week and I just ordered a FT-60R yesterday. I have seen so many good reviews of this radio. The Diamond antenna seems to be a very good choice of antenna for this unit as well. I did buy a Baofeng BF-F9V2+ last year before I knew much at all about HTs at all so I guess I will be selling it now. Good advice here and thanks again.
Can’t recommend enough, get a super tall ammo can off amazon and use it for tools and chemical storage in your back tire carrier rack. Love it on mine. Hate when wd40 sprays in the bag inside your cab. Never again.
Thank you very much. After reading many reviews and watching several videos here on the tube, I recently purchased a brand new Yaesu FT-60 here in Europe. It's a very nice piece of technology and feel excellent in the hand, solid and its weight gives the impression of a serious portable radio. I don't know what I'm doing yet and certainly do not possess a license, but step by step. Cheers and thanks again, your video here is resourceful.
Great video, I like the principle of reducing weight, and you and others here are right: we tend to carry too much stuff. Now, realistically speaking, on a real grid down situation or any disaster when you'd have to hoof it back to your family and supplies, and IMHO some items are a must. I carry what I call "initial water", maybe three 20 oz bottles plus a bottle of Gatorade. If you get stranded in the middle of nowhere, it may be a long hike to that stream, lake, or even convenience store still open, to be able to secure hydration. You have to carry some food, even if it is energy/protein bars, calories are important. One item most people overlook is a Silcock key: it's small and will allow you to get water from a lot of buildings you may encounter on the way home. Water is a critical item in my opinion so being able to procure it or filter it are high on the list. So yes, keeping the bag at 20 lbs or less is the target but with all crucial items included. Remember that as you consume your carry food and water, the bag will be lighter.
Dude, you still have a ridiculous amount of food and nowhere near enough water. If you need to skip food for a day or two it's really not going to be a big deal medically. If you skip drinking you'll be dead. Just throw a Packet of SOS bars in there. It's only 1lb and it should keep you going for 3 days. Also I'd add some packets of trioral or some other electrolyte solution just to help keep your hydrated while minimizing your bulk/weight. Now transfer the weight savings into another 2 quarts of water (pro tip, smart water bottles are 1/2 the weight of nalgines and equally indestructible). Now, I get that you plan on purifying water along that way, but that 1 quart isn't going to get you far in the summer and you never know when you're going to hit a dry spot or if the reservoirs your playing using will be contaminated. All the iodide tablets and life straws in the world can't help you if a train derailed and spilled a few thousand gallons of diesel into the river. Think about it.
Sweet
That's crazy .way too much!
Hello, quick question, I purchased my ft60r a couple of years ago. I'm wondering if it's possible to program a frequency with duplexing turned off or make it receive only. "PTT disabled" Thanks
Hmm. I would assume so. Take a look at page 28 in the Operating Manual link. www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&encProdID=6EC43B29CEF0EC2B4E19BB7371688B7F

Cool video.
Might have missed it but what rims are those? Jeep looks great!
Weight is a HUGE factor. All of these youtube videos are filled with these monster oversized and overpacked bags with everything but the kitchen sink....and I think that I may have seen a couple of those in some of the kits as well. Last summer a couple of us tested our bags on an overnight hike. We were dropped off the evening before and picked up later the next morning. After that hike and overnighter.....we completely changed what we carried, how much we carried, how we carried it, and even what pack we used. Too many out there are building kits for videos....from what I have seem there is little chance that they have truly tested and used the kits. One of the most important thing in the kit, but rarely spoken about, is our clothing....especially our footwear.
Justin Russell It's funny you should say that about the kitchen sink. I travel light but I do have a kitchen sink out of a doll house so I can say I have everything i need.
Most have gear that's never even been used,, but they telling ya how great it is.
Bull bar wrong side install
First! Thanks for the video. Link the stove?
I got this as a gift a few years ago. I haven't seen this exact model for sale in a while, but if you google "solar oven parabola" you will see several similar products.
Your Jeep looks great. Did you realize that the grill guard hoop on your front bumper is installed backwards? Is that how you wanted it installed?
2inch mopar LIFT? AND WHAT SIZE tires?
Great rig. I have an overland built 4Runner with so many mods not much is still stock. I doubt Toyota would warranty anything left on my rig after all my mods. Curious how your Jeep warranty works out once you start installing lockers, new gearing, etc. Thx for the vid.
Remember your on your way home, food wont be a major thought just add a few more cliff bars and trail mix.you are not going to be thinking about food more than your family.
A couple of things i noticed, and its just an opinion. Loose the pot and bottle if you want a bottle get stainless steel and get a Sawyer mini you can always cut the hydration and insert the mini.
30,000 miles blew my tranny In snow in my drive way dealership warranty didn't cover it gave me b.s. of unnatural driving I have a jeep jk brand new put 30,000 miles on it if I can't get out 4 ft snow then why do you have a jeep parked outside on 10 ft snow ramp
What gears do you have?
Stock gears - 3.19.
Oh wow. Ya i have 3.21 gears and find it sluggish with the stock 32's. How does it drive with 35's?
It's not a sports car, especially with the heavier bumpers. It's a smooth ride, and I get about 18 mpg on the highway with the 6 speed transmission.
Nice video. So many mods to do lol. You have a great start. Happy wheeling.
That warranty is good and all but only for Jeep owners who won’t actually use the Jeep for what it’s made for.... once you start changing out gears stronger shafts and all that, the warranty goes out the window and ends up being just wasted money
U spend 6000 on a lift tires then u got to buy axles dana 40 4 grand dana 60 7000
I have the same mind set I got the same back bumper I am just waiting to bed line it before I put it on seeing that Chicago like to use so much salt in the winter the bed liner will protect it I hope how do you like that bumper have you had any problems with it opening out making noise when it have the big tire and 10 gallons on it
The rear bumper and swing out arm work great. The latch had some problems initially but we got that worked out.
Outstanding analogy on the backpack leaf blower. I wear mine about 4 hours with ease.
Nice rig...did u install air compressor yourself? I would like to do something like that with my jeep
Dwayne, I did not do the install. I let Jeep Masters here in Austin do it. This week they are going to install a 2 gallon air tank which will create more capacity for air tools. Stay tuned for more videos on that.
Awesome...will do...will be looking forward to see where that lands....would you recommend an extra fuel tank (attached)? Like maybe 5 gal? I'd like to add extra fuel capacity without strapping/mounting gas cans
You can add an extended fuel tank...but those are rather expensive. Jerry cans are cheaper, and the allow you the flexibility of using your spare gasoline to supply someone else or to fuel generators or other gas powered tools.
Great upgrades.
lol " Barbie for men " can't wait to customize my jeep
Great video with some excellent ideas.
I Carrie what i think i need
Getting home can turn into 72 hrs or more depending on how bad the shtf
I suggest joining CERT in your community if there is one. It would provide year round training including volunteer opportunities to help at community events.
CERT is a great organization. I've taken the classroom portion of their training. The challenge for CERT is that it does not fall under the umbrella of the Austin EMS system, unfortunately. Ideally, I would find an organization that would allow me some ambulance time where I can build skills while helping.
The CERT team in my area is under the Fire Department. Becoming and EMT is in my bucket list. Your video was encouraging to me. Thanks!
Good video Paul. We only need to get her a few miles further down the road to MS State we will make a bulldog out of her!! I did the same for my kids with the bag, I also purchased a small road side assistance kit with plug in air compressor jumper cables etc. also found a great little auto repair place. I had to drive to Starkville a couple of times to jump a car off or change a flat before getting the ideas. Go Dawgs!!
We're good about doing regular maintenance on her car. She has a roadside kit, but she also has a AAA card which is likely her first call to make.
Would you ever consider actually attempting to hoof it back to Austin from Dallas to see if your bag works well?
I am talking to some folks about doing a shorter test run over a two day period to test the gear and our abilities to cover significant amounts of distance in short periods of time.
Oh man I am totally making cookies in one. My '70s oven heats up my kitchen something fierce; outdoors would be better!
