Sunfish Foam Dryout

Here's an easy and cheap way to dry out waterlogged flotation foam in a Sunfish or Minifish sailboat. For this project I used a couple "muffin fans" such as this one from Amazon: www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-Cooling-Ventilation-Projects/dp/B009OWVUJ0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1534717954&sr=8-4&keywords=computer fan

This video illustrates a dangerous condition on Route 6A in East Brewster, Massachusetts. We're hoping this video makes it easier for the DOT authorities to understand the need for corrective action.

Was this resolved? If so, how? Did you wind up chipping in for some digging and gravel w the neighbor.... or did the town do right by you?

I'd like to know how much the wet boat weighed and how much it weighs after being dried out.

No way can you get that dried. Sorry, but month later; that thing still has water.

This is awesome, thanks so much for sharing. Did you end up repairing the other holes (like the one you showed where there was chafing)? I have a sunfish with a few spongy spots in the hull, wondering if it's necessary to patch those and if so, how to get started.

Hi. Working fiberglass is not the easiest thing to do when starting from scratch, but it is not impossible and it gives a lot of satisfaction. There are many tutorials around, but I would advise to ask "real" people for help, at least at the beginning. A pro would be obviously better, but almost any surfers you might know, repairs his boards; those who are into RC modeling, are very good as well, and also car bodyshop DIYers. Ask your friends :) Good luck!

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to restore an old sunfish which has had holes and the foam inside the hull has absorbed water for years. What CFM do you have on your fans? I found this household fan with 185 CFM and am using it currently. www.honeywellstore.com/store/products/honeywell-turboforce-air-circulator-fan-ht-900.htm Is it worth investing in another fan directly for this application?

Thanks for the video. I’ll be putting in 2-3 inspection ports in a ‘78 minifish I recently bought and I’m trying to avoid hitting foam. This helps see where the foam blocks might be. The seller told me the hull didn’t take on any water… after my first trip out there was so much water inside I couldn’t believe it still floated.

I wouldn’t waste my time with a MiniFish. I have 2. They are a L O N G way from a Sunfish, although look quite similar. Mr Sunfish, Cotuit. 50+ yrs experience with these boats.

Decided to go with a bigger fan. Used a 4.5 hp blower detachable from a shop vac. Seems to be working well but just can’t leave it on 24/7 though.

Doesn't appear to be a Sunfish. I believe that that hull is a Sunfish clone.

Minifish, made by AMF (Alcort Division).

Hi Nate, My husband John says there used to be drainage ditches in that area along Route 6A and into the Seaview and Vespers Pond subdivisions. CC Mosquito Control might know more. They used to control those ditches. He says there used to be maps of the drainage ditches. Not sure if that helps at all. Let us know what we can do to help.

That's awesome! I'm going to pick up a 14 ft sunfish tommorow that I'm going to convert it into a small skiff/ bass boat with an outboard motor. If it's waterlogged I'll definitely be using this idea to dry it out ! Great video!
