Missouri Pacific Railroad Central Division, August 2021 Update
Just discovered you. I use this stuff on our *museum HO layout and love its versatility. But what is missing, is the weathering. I have so much to do, having taken over as the scenery guru two years ago. Much of the layout was still bare plywood and we wanted to make a GoPro video of everything to run on the screen at the drive-in theater, "The Great Train Ride". So, when I get the roads laid down, I'll be back with my new knowledge and the existing roads are going to look far better. Thanks in advance! (*Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad Museum, Salinas, CA) ...Shameless promotion.
So glad you found the video useful! I am going to try and get more how-to videos out so stay tuned! Hey, nothing wrong with promoting something you love. I will give a shout-out to the museum and post the website address my next layout update. Cheers!
Looking great and thank you for sharing. I am getting back into the hobby and was wondering what size wire you use for your track feeders and what kind of solder and if you use flux and what kind? thanks.
@@AndrewRiha Glad you enjoyed it Andrew! I use 18-gauge copper stranded for my feeders and connect these to my bus wires using 3M suitcase connectors. For soldering the feeders to my track, I use rosin core solder made for electronics. I do not use flux paste. I tend to go overkill when it comes to smooth and reliable operations. So I have a pair of feeders for every track section and turnout sections. I also equip my locomotives with TCS Keep Alive’s.
@@JosephMusgrove Thank you for the information.
Excellent video! Than you!
@@chrishartz2397 Thanks Chris!
Whoa! Thanks for the shout out. Thank you for showing the whole layout. It helps me put things in perspective. Keep up the great work. Really enjoy your videos and I learn something new each time.
@@CurtBergStillLoves2PlayTrains Thanks Curt!
Am a DC guy - use Peco turnouts 100% (with Atlas Code 83 flex track). Like them for being power routing-do have to add jumpers from time to time. Perhaps their quality comes from where they are manufactured-UK vs. China!
@@AllenCNW441 I went with Micro-Engineering turnouts when I started building the layout. But actually had to exchange several for defects including overuse of glue during the manufacturing process. That was right before the company was sold. But unless something changes in quality, I plan to stay with Peco.
All Peco turnouts all the time!!
And Caboose Industries throws-a lot easier than under the layout switch machines!
@@goaliegeorge Yep! Great product!
@@JosephMusgroveespecially if you use the, more to scale, N scale sprung version.
Thanks for the update, coming along nicely! I built one of those Tichy water towers and wanted to scream while doing so. It turned out nice, but I'll never build another. :)
@@thecnwmondovilinepaulscota7304 Thanks! Like you, I have decided one Tichy water tower build is all I can take. 😉
You mention that the room is 18' long. How big is the layout? Cheers Ken
@@Ken-Kaef Hi Ken! The layout room is 18x15. The layout itself is 30-inches wide and runs along the parameters of the walls.
@@JosephMusgrove Thanks Joseph. You are doing a great job. Cheers Ken😀
Good to see the MoPac rolling and things happening.
@@laspiedrasrailroad Thanks!
Great work. Love seeing the details and the process that you go through. It hurts to do, but it always ends up just making everything better.
@@wessparkmon2395 Thanks and certainly agree!
awesome weathering, really nice ops!
Thanks!
Haven't seen anything new in awhile. Doing ok ?
Thanks for asking! Doing fine. Actually posted an update back in August and currently working on an October update.
Thx Joe, I really like the technique you used at the Feed Mill. Always learning. Looking forward to your next video
@@CurtBergStillLoves2PlayTrains Thanks Curt!
A lot of tedious work but the results are great! Thanks for sharing your procedures.
@@robc2536 Glad you enjoyed it!
Thx for the update Joe. I like seeing more of your layout. Would you mind doing a panoramic sometime of your layout? I'm like you, once a scene is finished I don't like going back for any redo. However, if improvements can be made it's worth it.
@@CurtBergStillLoves2PlayTrains Thanks Curt! Request received and will get you a panoramic view!
@@JosephMusgrove yes! Thank you!
The feed mill is looking fine. The logo adds a lot of character. Enjoy watching the progress you have made!
@@garymartz7587 Thanks Gary!

@@KandWRailroader Thanks!
Are you using any mop track inventory charts? Also KCS had black GP-7's up to 79 or so. 4151 and 4160 were the last two.
@@kcsthebetterway Thanks for the info on the KCS locomotives. I have a Van Buren/Fort Smith car spotting guide issued to M.P. crews assigned to the area. It contains a basic track map to include yard and industry tracks, names of each industry, car spotting positions, etc.
@@JosephMusgrove they are a great tool for track planning.
My home town in HO scale! I think I've said that before lol. Looks great!!
Thanks Aaron!
how do you create curves in the right of way
@@rickzander4859 Found the easiest way is to create a template with soldering wiring. Basically you carefully shape the wire along the curves and within the curve. You can then place the wire on the foam and carefully cut along the wire. Before gluing down the foam, you can trim as needed. (Wheel spacing for example)
Awesome video and thanks for sharing. Dave
@@davestrains6816 Thanks Dave!

@@Hornhausen Glad you enjoyed the video!
My home town. Great looking layout!!!
@@aaronl_trains_and_planes Thanks!
I've ridden the excursion many times and I've never seen them use 3 of the C420's.
@@aaronl_trains_and_planes The train was an hour late coming in from Springdale due to a locomotive failure. They must have just added the replacement to the consist without pulling the problem child. They had some gremlins that day. Locomotive failure, air-conditioning failed on one coach, and the air-conditioning blower in the dome was not working.
@@JosephMusgrove Sounds like the trip I took last year. Train was an hour late coming back to VB. The Engines were fine, it was the generators and A/C on 2 of the coaches that kept breaking down. And it was the first hot day they had had that year. Other than that it was a great trip.
Looks like a nice 🚂🛤️ride! I love those ALCo's !!!!
@@chrisbell52310 I was concerned when the A&M purchased EMDs a few years back. But looks like they will keep the ALCOs running as long as they can!
Great share Joseph! enjoyed it!

Great video! Love your scenery and attention to detail. Question regarding the background buildings at the beginning of the video - are those buildings, building flats, or a backdrop photo(s)?
Glad you enjoyed the video! The buildings are flats made by Trackside Flats. They are photos attached to foam core. I also have some made by PTF Designs. PTF designs include builtin LED lights on their buildings you can connect to a power source. Both vendors can be found on eBay. The prices are extremely reasonable.
JM~, Beautiful layout, great modeling and fantastic video brother. Loved the whole train chasing trip. 😉 Thanx Thom...

Fantastic look at operations! That open auto rack with the top row of vans really brings back memories. All the details look good! - Paul

Fantastic video and beautiful layout! Is the elongated mail express boxcar a custom build or is it a stock model?
Thanks! You can purchase the kits through the Missouri Pacific Historical Society. I got lucky and found this model on eBay.
@@JosephMusgrove Awesome thank you so much. I remember seeing one of these while out railfanning in Newport, Arkansas and always stuck to my mind.
is that a mopac locomotive in the thumbnail? If so, which?
I took that picture several years ago and do not remember what railroad the locomotive served. I will look back through my photos to see if I can get that info for you.
Great update, love the tourist trap. Thanks for sharing. Dave

Thanks for the update! Now you need a BigFoot from MiniPrints. 😀

Good to see progress! A friend once told me, even if you drill a single hole and then go to bed, it’s progress. I follow that and have made great progress! Keep up the good work, fellow MoPac modeler!
Thanks! Yep, even slow and steady you will get there!
Awesome update video as always Joseph! Also I am in need of help with some research for a new model railroad I'm looking to start based on the KCS Baxter Springs branch which connected KCS main line with I believe the MP at Baxter Springs but not sure. I can give you my email address if you would like to contact me with information.

Thanks! If you ever get this way, you have free tickets to the Big Foot museum! 😉
@@JosephMusgrove 😂😂Thanks
👍 Good video, I enjoy your layout, very nice!
Thanks!
Always enjoy seeing what you are doing with structures. Mine have a long way to go. On the bigfoot story, I read something the other day that bigfoot is an alien species. If you subscribe to the idea that we are not the the only inhabited planet I guess it's possible. I like the idea of a G scale or an S scale one would be closer to being in scale.
Thanks Jack! Leaning towards going with a G scale Bigfoot. If the alien theory is correct, may have to include burned tree tops and landing pad indentions!
I would get a G scale Bigfoot and the tourist trap could claim the world's biggest Bigfoot!
Love it!
Like Kong, Bigfoot will be seen climbing that Tower soon! 😂
Oh the horror! 😁
Been enjoying your MoPac layout! I model the MoPac's little sister, the Texas and Pacific.
Glad you enjoy the channel Michael! Grew up in the 70s watching the MoPac blue so the layout brings back many great memories. The T&P also has an interesting history so it’s good to know it is alive and well on your layout! Cheers!
