Shawna, Thank you and your co-star for showing us some great tips. My wife and I have learned that an old panty hose leg can be slid over the board to keep my skin from causing me to hang on the board. I also have used a double folder paper towel under my leg to improve the slippage. Take precautions so the surfer doesn’t slide right off the board; then you’ve got to call ☎️ 911, and that can be bad. Thanks again

Thanks to you and your senior costar for showing this transfer in a real home with the kind of chair many folks have. Showing people with different ages and body types (not just therapists) makes things more relatable for families and friends who are learning how to do this for the first time.

I had more falls when I put the wheelchair at a 45 degree angle, I put the wheel chair directly in from of the bed. I use the sliding board to turn and slide and have never fallen. PTs have watched me and found it to be OK. Therapists are seldom around in my home to aid.

What if the patient is quite a bit taller than you? That’s the challenge I’m currently having!! He’s a 6 foot 200 pound man, I’m 5’4 so can u give me some pointers? He can stand up with Assistance, of course but I just don’t have the strength to pull them up like that.

Question: I'm an old-timer and our transfer boards were solid or with horizontal hand holes. I see many now have vertical hand holes. They say user preference, and tried to find more info on it, but none. Do you have any input on the difference and the benefit of one or the other? Thx!

As a fellow therapist, thought this was excellent to show a home patient beforehand, especially when they are fearful. The bending forward to scoot forward can cause anxiety in some patients.

Yes, you just have to make sure the board is graded for 300lbs. The board is normally called a bariatric transfer board.

That board is way too long . She needs a board 30 inches with hand grips . From a wheelchair to a chair the wheelchair must higher and vice versa. Problem I have with a recliner is the arms on the chair since you cant remove them like a wheelchair so you must tranfer to the seat cushion and hope your behind has enough room. Getting back too is a challenge. Anyone who can help please tell me .

This is fine for someone that can actually ambulate. My husband is a multiple stroke survivor and he doesn't follow this way of moving. Can't sit up on his own, can't turn over on his own, and this does not work with him. He is just there, wherever, until I move him...glad for those who it does work for though. Blessings.
