They’re AMAZING actors! In the movie Shane is very extroverted, foolish, spontaneous ..in real life he seems moderately introverted and more reserved. Both of them look a bit nervous here but Shane looks more confident and assertive.

Shane is a rather simplistic person. He does not make fine distinctions between best friends and lovers. It is all the same to him. In other words, "best friends" is the ultimate. You many have many lovers but you have only one best friend. A best friend is a part of you. You will notice from the beginning how possessive he was in regards to Jonathan. He did not accept for you to even look at Jonathan. He would not even let Jonathan sit next to Carrie. He even showed jealousy toward his own mother for being too friendly to Jonathan. He always wanted to be in Jonathan's presence. Jonathan always gave in to Shane's demands to his own detriment. You can't just have sex with someone because you don't want to lose them. Consider that Jonathan wanted desperately to have sex with Carrie but was unable to do so. Because he did not feel that way about her. So I reject the notion that Shane just had sex with Jonathan because he feared losing him. As his best friend, Shane after understanding that Jonathan wanted sex from him, was willing and able to oblige him. Something that Jonathan could not do for Carrie. So do not be mislead by Shane's pronouncement that Jonathan was his Best Friend. That word to Shane was the ultimate. It included but was greater than intimate sex.

Saw this on Netflix. I really appreciate the vague ending. It’s one of the few times I like being able to interpret it myself. My thought is that Shane knew Jonathan was in love with him at that point, and therefore slept with him in fear of losing him. Shane did not have other friends and loved Jonathan, but I don’t believe he was IN love with him. At the end when he admits to Jonathan he is his best friend, it was a way of saying “I don’t love you in that way, but I can’t lose you.” Shane was very codependent but that changed once Carrie arrived. It ends abruptly because who knows what could happen after that. Shane got into University, Jonathan didn’t. Also, Shane has Carrie. Jonathan failing school was due to being lovesick and coming to terms with his sexuality. He has his own path to discover. Great tender film.
