Live Met Opera 03/12/1960....The great Cornell MacNiel and Leonie Rysanek. In retrospect this is powerhouse Rysanek. The critics were not ready.

She sounds really good here, despite a slight hoarseness of tone--I know this was 1968 when her voice was beginning to wear but still this is a very good rendition. However, is there any way you could eliminate the chirping sounds in the recording?
Hi, I don't hear or understand the chirping sound you mention..I wonder what it is? In any event 1968 was the beginning of her downslide.She canceled the first performance then returned to give a so so performance..I was totally surprised by the broadcast. She sounded nothing like this the night I saw her. Here she really gives it her all with Bergonzi and Merrill with Cleva conducting straight out of the sounds of Italy. My favorite Rigoletto.
You should hear her Debussy album. It's like listening to a piece of Heaven, the songs are so light, ethereal, almost otherworldly. Her voice is rich and sumptuous and you'd never know it was made in 1971; there are no signs of distress at all.

The extreme top notes were slightly "schlanker" but with lots of overtones and had incredible tension that were absolutely riveting - they almost had a passionate wild sound sound to them even though they were always controlled. Nilsson tops did indeed shoot out like a laser. There was never much passion in Nilsson's singing and she never made my spine tingle in quite the same way as Leonie did.
Having heard Moffo sing this on a recording with Di Stefano, I can't accept anyone else as Des Grieux to her Manon.
I have seen them both, Rysanek, Nilsson, separately and together...They had voices of equal size and power..Nilsson, of course, was like a laser and Rysanek was hot.
Thanks so much for this upload. I love Rysanek and especially her Senta. I'm sure that I read a review of one of Rysanek's many Senta's saying that her top register was one of the most sizeable and comparable, if not bigger, than Nilsson's ... I may be wrong!

My pleasure (I love Massenet so much that I didn't feel it was "right" to torture his name :-)) Great recording and I know how much Moffo loved the role (I still own one of her superb golden stage costume in the role). There's also another interesting live recording from Monte-Carlo with Vanzo and Gottlieb. Best.
Yes the Vanzo recording with Moffo is fantastic but I can't find it anymore..

Beautiful and unforgettable Moffo as Manon, with her sumptuous tone, gorgeous looks and first-class musicality. Her staccati are outstanding, as is her radiant rendition of the gavotte by MASSENET (and not MASSAnet) .... Great document. Thanks for posting.
