AB PLC Test Bench
Canada
Приєднався 26 січ 2018
I am a Canadian Red Seal Electrician, with over 35 years AB PLC experience.
My apprenticeship was served in at a large sawmill site in BC, Canada.
In the 2nd year of my apprenticeship in 1982, I was part of the crew that installed the first mini-PLC2 on site.
From there our entire site was slowly changed from hardwired relay logic to AB PLC controls.
This channel is about how I test Allen Bradley/ Rockwell Automation PLC components CLogix/RS5000, PLC5 & SLC500 parts.
Videos are done at my workbench, with actual components that I sell.
Check back often as I will continue to post videos on how to test various AB PLC parts.
If you have questions on how to learn to be a PLC programmer - I would strongly suggest that you check out this website www.plcs.net - Clear and concise explanations about PLC programming - Link is below.

Hello . Please can you give me a little training on devicenet ? Thanks
Hello: Devicenet is no longer supported by Rockwell or anyone else. I used it for a bit while I was working in the sawmill, but that was it. It was a system that was prone to failures and had way too many quirks. Nothing I can do for training and suggest your facility get rid of it as soon as you can.

Hi: You are welcome - I hope my videos assist in understanding AB PLC's.
I was wondering when I wire one of these up do i need to use a separate power source for the load. I see your using a 120 volt source for the light and im guessing when they say load dependent it means the 120 volt source is dependent upon the 24 volt NO relay inside the module? Just wondering if I'm understanding this correctly.
Hi: There are 16 tiny little relays in there and you don't really want a heavy load on them. Personally I would not put more than 1/4 to 1/2 amp load at max on any channel regardless of the voltage.
Hi again: YES - I would keep the processor power supply and communication power supplies separate from any field devices power. AC or DC. High swings to the incoming power supply can cause the power supply to malfunction. It can also clear the memory and fault the processor. This is exactly the same scenario that happens with the SLC500.
Hello!! I want to connect to a SLC 5/03 on the Port 0 is configurated as DF1 Full Duplex, is posible to use this cable?
Hello Miguel: The UIC adapter can be switched between RS232 for the serial communication port or DH485 which is the other port. Even though it looks like an ethernet port it is not. Just about any USB to serial adapter will allow you to hook up to the 9 pin RS232 port. The biggest trick is to make sure you have the correct 9 pin cable. Thne do an auto configure in Linx and it should connect.
@@abplctestbench759 Thanks for your Response! Well I try with my USB Serial Adapter and a null-modem cable and the RSLinx never connect to the PLC, and the Autoconfigure always fail. The correct cable is a female to female DB9 with Pins 2 - 3; 3 - 2; and Straight 5? Thanks Again?

Hello, I have a panel view plus 7, the bd9870 voltage regulator is burned out, it has fatal error 3a, can you explain to me what could have happened, thank you
Hi Michael: THE PVP7 overlays that come direct from the factory are some of the cheapest crap I have seen since in years. 3A Fatal error is when the touchscreen overlay is damaged and stuck to glass. It is a stuck button error and can be caused by any abrasion or pushing too hard on the screen. I had one the other day that I fixed that looked perfect, but still gave the error. A pin prick thru the plastic to the glass will give the error also. Burning out the power supply is a new one on me. Was this in an area of some fluid or somewhere similar?

I fought a mass meter today on a Ctr8 that wouldn’t give any feedback on 2 channels. I swapped it with a channel that was working and the problem moved. How can i verify this channels are getting feedback
HI: Normally my experience if the problem moves it is the input device. Take a spare input device - disconnect the field device at the PLC and hook the spare up to the card. Then see if you have the readings from the new device. (If you don't get a reading from the new device then it is the module - replace it.) Reconnect the field device. Go to a junction box close to the field device - disconnect the field device and hook on you now known spare device. If you get the readings at that point it is a safe bet that the original field device is dead. This is the standard 'divide and conquer' technique.
@@abplctestbench759 we had a short on a machine frame and had several devices get fried. What’s strange about this one card is it has 4 devices on it and we originally lost 3/4. We replaced them now 1/3 doesn’t work. We moved that one to a another channel and it didn’t work there either.

Hello Fidel: Sorry for the delayed reply. I do NOT have any software to sell. It is illegal for me to sell and Rockwell software. There is a group of Rockwell lawyers waiting for me to do that so they can sue me. You would have to have someone sign over their license to you in order to get a copy. Maybe one of the other subscribers has a copy they can lend to you, but I can't because of legal threats from Rockwell. I am sorry that I can not assist you with the software.
Hello. Thank you very much for the video
You are very welcome. Hope that the information is helpful.
What are the white/greenish trays that come with these terminal blocks? Looks like 8 tabs and 8 hooks/clips. Can't for the life of me figure out what they're for. Never seen any of our other slots use them.
Hi: Another bad idea from AB. These are supposed to be like the old style Keying bands that used to come with PLC5 chassis. They were responsible for a lot of damage to chassis and modules. You can set them up in a configuration of your choice to make sure the correct module is inserted into the correct wiring arm. A nice idea, but no idea if anyone uses them and AB does not give any guidance about using them. Recycle bin is best location IMO.
We had a L82ES do the same thing we have changed CPU's powersupply's and chasing, but no resolve. Rockwell has yet to come back with a good answer.
Hi BigTr: The longer the l8x is in service, the more problems seem to be showing up! Rockwell keeps doing firmware changes and screaming like kids about how everyone has to buy their software at insane prices, but not putting out a higher quality product. Each generation of Clogix processor has increased the processor speed 10x each time. But is it necessary? A super high speed processor is still not going to make your waste system in the basement work any faster or better. I still have customers very happily running SLC & PLC5 and it just keeps plugging along doing what it was designed to do.
I have some of these. How do you set them up to just test and try it out? I'm worried that some software that is no longer available is needed.
Hello TB: Which Flex I/O modules are you worried about? There are many of them and all are current. Can you be more specific in your question? I have a number of videos on my channel that use the 1794 modules. ua-cam.com/play/PLApJy6_fcuvi_kx1MeMJjYus6rphDwVma.html You can also check the Rockwell site for product lifecycle status list - www.rockwellautomation.com/en-us/support/product/product-compatibility-migration/product-lifecycle-status.html
Had a few real quick questions is there a part number to these plates and are these plates available from Allen Bradley?
Hi: If you look close on each one there is a part number on there. No idea if AB sells them as I am blacklisted from buying from AB because I sell parts that are experienced. I ended up getting a guy to make on a 3D printer. In bulk they cost me $45 (CDN) each to get made. The option is to get some SLC500 chassis and strip them out of there. They are exactly the same size and better quality using the grey plastic compared to the cheap black plastic that they used in Clogix. The Clogix footprint is based on the SLC footprint. If you look at the screw holes in the chassis they are exactly the same. Hope this helps.
@@abplctestbench759 Thanks for answering my questions that actually helps out a lot. I think I’m going to buy a 3D printer and print them off. I have a feeling Allen Bradley doesn’t sell them. Hey i wanna know how i connect the panelview to the plc ... have allen bradley slc500 and panelview 550
I have had this on 3 processors. Terrible situation, we brought Rockwell for their reliability and responsibility. Both are badly lacking. I am now moving to use Japanese and Chinese plc products and so far reliability has been perfect.
HI Tony: I have to agree with you on the lower quality of the product they are putting out in the last 10 years. What was an industry standard is getting to be an industry joke. The original PLC5 / 1771 structure was designed by old school Rockwell engineers and built to US MIL Spec - MTBF design was 80 years. Lots of it still running. The new stuff is designed to commercial specs and will normally last around 10 years.
This is wonderful. Thank you
Thanks a lot my facility still implementing plc5, older SLC processors and different remote I/0 types not enough videos like this to learn from
Hi Taryn: Glad you were able to get some value out of my videos. As I have mentioned before the PLC5 generation of processors were designed by an older generation of designers. They were also built to US MIL SPEC and a have a MTBF of 80 years. The processor I used in this video has a date code of 1992 and I had just replaced the channel 1 communication port. It had blown up and there was carbon everywhere. But a quick changeout and away it goes for another 20 to 40 years. I think there will be lots of these in service long after I have turned to dust.☺
You’re a legend
hello sir , I was wondering if i can upgrade sd ram and cf card of allen bradley by other sd ram and cf card but not alllen bradley but its out cost around 50$ and in ab cost 800$ so am asking it is possible
Hello: The CF card is formatted with the operating system and the RAM chip matches the card. You should be able to pickup a set of CF & Ram from ebay or similar online market place in your country for a lower price than Rockwell dealers want. Once you have made sure that the 'new' CF card has the correct version of F/W to match your running program, just reload your program on to the new card. Sorry I can't help any more than that. Thank you for the question.
“Pktx rio adapter driver detected block transfer size mismatch for BT1 (rack:1(oct.) slot:8) Driver*” Any idea what to do about this message on my PV+? I have tried what is written in the knowledge base but that didn’t change anything. I have also tried two separate HMI.
HI: I have never seen that error. Suspect that you are using this on a PLC5? Possibly change out the RN6 communication card that is mounted on the logic module. The RN6 contains a standard 1784-PKTX communication card that plugs into the logic module. They can be set up for DH+ - RIO - DH485 for communication with PLC5 & SLC processors.
@@abplctestbench759 Thanks, yes that’s correct, PLC 5. The PanelView is connected to a 1771-ASB from the RN6. I have also tried two separate PV+ units. Both give the same error.
Hi:@@MrExtremehustler Not sure what to suggest then. Possibly check your program backups compared to your running file to see if anyone changed a parameter in the block transfers for the read and write to the PV. Is there data being written into the BT file area that is overwriting something it should not. Also is there a DH+ network and maybe someone is writing to your PV from another station? The only other possibility I might suggest is changing out the logic module and downloading a backup file to it. Not the file running on the PV you are having trouble with.
Have you ever had a chassis with dead spots? We have a 1756-A17 and a couple of he 1756-OF8 cards had their RTNs stop having continuity to the chassis ground. We have had 2 OF8 side by side with their RTNs functioning differently. Card replacement did not resolve the issue, so we are thinking its the chassis.
I have seen a couple of bad ones for sure. Because of how cheaply they designed the system it is possible for thin pieces of metal to get behind the backplane and then short out pins. I would start by taking the chassis apart on a clean bench and see if anything conductive comes out when you have dismantled it. The same with where the cards plug into the headers. They are not sealed on the bottom so there is a possibility of shorting material there. Also confirm all of your grounding from the power supplies and the chassis. All grounds used in the system must be tied to a common grounding point. Hope this helps.
awsome video!, is there a way that you can share the panel builder software for the 1400e? tnx!
Hello Israel - I do not have a copy that I can sell or give away. Even though AB / Rockwell no longer sells or supports the software they still own it and guard it like a mad dog. Do you have a procedure to calibrate a thermocouple card mv 1756 16 or 8 Channel Type J
Hi Greg: From what I read in the documentation - a percision resistor is required to do this calibration on these cards. I asked multiple supply sources and no one could supply me with one about 6 months ago when I looked for them. The software will step you thru the calibration but the external resistor is required before you start. I will find the value and post here in the answers tomorrow. If you have a source I would like to get some for my stock! Thank you for asking.
Found this today in the Analog calibration manual: From reading thru the manual you need a mV voltage calibrator source. I don't currently have one and not sure of the prices, but suspect that $1000 or more is not out of line. Cut and paste from manual below. -------------------------- Calibrating the 1756-IT6I or 1756-IT6I2 This module only calibrates in millivolts. You can calibrate the module to either a -12…+30 mV range or -12…+78 mV range, depending upon your specific application.
Appreciate you for share your knowledge. It helped me and saved me time.

Hi I have a 1794-IE12 that is flashing green and showing FieldPowerOff as a 1. I have it configured properly. What can I do to fix this issue?
Hello: That is normally the error when you have a broken wire / open connection between the device and the module.
Thanks sir. Please do you offer any training?
Hello - No I do not. There is a link at the top of my page that shows www.plcs.net/ for training I would start there as there are multiple subjects and links for training. Thank you for asking.
What kind of wire did u use ?
Hello: 18AWG - Shielded wire. All grounds tied together at the module end.

Hi, do you have any video or code that you can send on how to create a virtual axis through an encoder that enters an HSC module and then gear it to a real axis of a Kinetix 6000. Regards
HI Fernando: Sorry I have no idea about anything to do with Kinetix. Have never worked with them and don't think I have ever seen one. Wish I could offer more help but not within my abilties.
