    Increasing income is where the vast majority of people need to focus their time/effort. Decreasing your expenses far below what the median HH spends to force a high savings rate is incredibly constraining and will likely lead to a miserable FIRE journey and a life not well spent during your best years. Definitely trim your budget to eliminate wasteful spending, but building high value skills is the king maker. There are a lot of teachers out there living pretty comfortably in their 60s, but not very many retiring early in their 40s!

    Tastyworks has a good backrester if anyone’s interested. Instead of looking at a covered call, backtest purely the short call. That’s your alpha. Planning to sell the 5-10 delta and only when the RSI is 50-80. Learned my lesson during the Covid crash. No rolling calls down. If there’s no premium, there’s no premium. Wait for the recovery and if you absolutely must do something calendar spread or put vertical based on vix.

    I did this for a little while. I only stopped because I am using multiple strategies - admittedly probably too many. I will probably revisit this approach. 1. Maintain more than 100 shares to sell off when profitable. 2. Sell 0dte calls 3. Buy back on drops. 4. Sell weeklies if I don't want to actively manage. 5. Scale back in on drops. You did quite well. You beat the spy average increase, no? A by a lot, right? GL!

    I’m a big fan of the NEOS funds. I hold QQQI and BTCI alongside my QGRW and IBIT holdings. I outsourced all my call writing and now just focus on put writing instead. Opportunistically when the market or individual companies are oversold. For anyone in the pre-FI accumulation phase, I’d just recommend owning SPY and QQQ and worrying about income and de-risking with cash/bonds as you ramp toward FI. I’m in my early 40s and we’ve already won the game so I’ve adopted a more conservative, less volatile asset allocation. We still get most or all of the market returns but with a lot less volatility and a lot more passive income. We also have a rental real estate portfolio that provides an additional income stream. 👍🏻

    • @dukeofearlyretirement
      @dukeofearlyretirement 2 дні тому

      That's an important point. It's probably not a good idea to sell options for people in the accumulation phase. Regarding the NEOS funds, I like the tax efficiency and I want use them in a taxable account. So far, I've eased in with about $10,000. Have you found QQQI to be as tax efficient as it sounds on paper?

    • @CalmerThanYouAre1
      @CalmerThanYouAre1 2 дні тому

      @ yeah it’s basically in their mission statement as a company. 60/40 LTCG/STCG in the worst case scenario if they’re so profitable they can’t use a ROC strategy for any of the distributions. I hold them in my taxable account as well. If we get a big pull back or correction, I’ll probably add a bunch more of my lowest-yielding fund CGDV on margin and let the margin interest expense offset the STCG portion of the QQQI distributions. That way I’m only dealing with LTCG passive income from the portfolio in retirement. Anything I earn from active options trading can be offset with other business expenses. If the income starts growing too high over time, I’ll start trimming the high yield positions and reallocate those funds to lower-yielding holdings and reduce my target allocation to high yield in general.

    • @dukeofearlyretirement
      @dukeofearlyretirement День тому

      I'm impressed with your plan. And the structure of those funds is interesting, especially the return of capital part. Listening to a couple interviews with the managers helped it make sense.

    • @CalmerThanYouAre1
      @CalmerThanYouAre1 День тому

      @ thanks. NEOS has their own YT channel and they posted a good interview where the fund managers basically do a strategy review of all their most popular funds. Worth a watch. Armchair Income has a couple good interviews with the fund managers as well. GPIQ and GPIX are two more to consider. Lower expense ratio than NEOS and solid total return. A bit lower yield. Not sure they will be as diligent about tax management. So far, I’d rather own QQQ and QQQI for the same average yield as GPIQ produces. Good luck! 🥃

      A company can leverage the location of its office and the expected number of employees working there daily to negotiate a tax reduction with the city or state. The company can secure a significant tax break relative to the operating expenses associated with maintaining the office. In return, the city benefits from increased economic activity and consumption, as the employees contribute to the local economy-creating a win-win for both parties. Unfortunately, for the employees, it’s a different story. We’ll have to accept the trade-off if we want the income, which is the sad reality.

    If your job doesn't mind your doing personal things while on the clock, then that's fine, but if you are on the clock, then your attention should be on your job. In my working years, far to many didn't do that, so it ruined it for all of us. I will add that "in the office" is important for collaboration, good collaboration. Feeling part of a team is developed much better in an office, but I guess that also depends on what the job is.

    Am I able to track trades as part of the options wheel strategy with this spreadsheet? If so, how would you recommend I do this? Maybe a completely separate tab? Thanks!

    • @dukeofearlyretirement
      @dukeofearlyretirement 6 днів тому

      Yes, you can simply track each part of the trade on its own row. Sell a put on one row. If assigned, that's on a separate row. And when you sell a call that's on a separate row. You could use the notes column to indicate that they are part of the same wheel trade. If it's important that these be tracked together and separate from your other trades, you could use a separate tab.

    New to FIRE? What questions do you have? And for those well down the path already, what were the first steps you took?

    I don't think I'm planning on retiring until close to 50. I'm 31 now (single), should be able to hit 2-3M$ by 50 (inflation adjusted). At about 250k currently (200k post-tax). Just got semi-lucky early on, picked a good major in college (Computer science) was getting paid to go to college after sophmore year because I had a perfect GPA and graduated with a 4.0, got a unique business opportunity immediately out of college, basically made over 90k immediately out of college, close to 150k now. May retire from my 9-5 in 2-3 years once my alternative income reaches about 120k/year. Most of the work is just seasonal automation so licensing the software and during the summer I'd basically be on vacation the whole time. It gets easier to sacrifice today for tomorrow, especially the closer you get to your goals and you see they are obtainable.. Early on you really just have to trust the process.

      Knowing what you know at 31, and with your strong income, you’ll be absolutely crushing it by 50!

      At a record store! Unfortunately, they barely exist anymore.

      Apparently half of all couples meet online now a days.. Dating apps aren't very good for men, maybe learning a skill and advertising yourself on existing social media platforms (instagram, facebook, etc).

    The struggle with keeping up with the Jones is the US is real. I moved to Sweden, in part, to get away from that, and that’s made a huge difference with my mental wellbeing. They are a lot less materialistic here, which takes off a lot of pressure. Are you still trading options?

      Sweden, nice! I think you had the right idea. Escaping America is looking better and better all the time. I haven't been trading options. But I'm looking into funds that could do it for me, like SPYI. Still haven't pulled the trigger on that idea.

    Lifestyle is tough for sure. We've been pretty good for almost 20 years but our expenses have gone way up just due to kids and inflation outpacing my wifes salary. Plus 2.5 years or mat leave, college fund saving etc. I'd say two kids has pushed retirement back at least a decade.

    • @dukeofearlyretirement
      @dukeofearlyretirement 16 днів тому

      Yep, Between lifestyle inflation, kids, and general inflation, it adds up quick. This is why I keep moving the goal posts. At this rate, my early retirement won't be "early" anymore!

      @@dukeofearlyretirement In fact, your speech is realistic, I alone around the age of 40 was already in early retirement, but a family of 4 or 5 people has extended the retirement from work by about 20 years. Because many expenses are added, (many of which are necessary and cannot be eliminated). Unforeseen events multiply for the number of people in the family unit. Direct and indirect taxes increase exponentially for each member of the growing family. It is not possible to follow a Siddharta-type lifestyle. Certainly with very high incomes you can easily save and invest half or more, because a not excessive part of the income is enough to cover all the expenses/taxes.

    Hello, and thank you mr. Duke. I really like this concept and your ideas and functionality tips are well explained. Is there a way to input data from a downloaded transaction history into these spreadsheets? The time required to enter each transaction is quite tiresome and I would be willing to pay for a service that integrates the raw data comes out of our trading platforms.
