I was late getting this, but I got a beautiful copy of it and the hint book. This is just a suggestion, and is just FYI: When I play a CRPG, I usually write out the name, class/profession, level, etc. of the party, so I can keep track of its progress, which I keep either in the game packaging, or on the computer table, which makes it easier to remember with unfamiliar games, especially this one.

    Ooh very cool stuff. I've been looking to start doing stuff like this myself (maybe not quite so retro as you, though). The concept of the Let's Play is quite unique and you have a pleasant cadence for commentary. I agree that I think you should have the only other sound be the in-game music/sounds, because that's more immersive than stock copyright free music or something. Just some notes on pronouncing the party member names (also for my own practice): Ryoshi = Ree-Oh-She Yakuza = Yaw-kuzzah (like "Huzzah! We've found the Holy Grail!"), but the way you pronounced it is fine too Shisai = She-sigh Mahotsukai = Ma-hoat (like coat or mote)-sky Genkai = Gen (hard "G" like in "get")-ky (like "sky"); this one was all good

    • @Goldenageofgames

      @@spooplegeist oh man I will try to incorporate those pronunciations! How do you know Japanese? Well I’m so pleased you think I have a pleasant cadence for commentary. And pretty darn cool that you’re thinking of making your own retro let’s plays as well. What kind of games were you thinking? And I’m definitely going to be not including any music or extra sounds during gameplay. Maybe little flavor bits here and there. But not like underlying music to help fill up the space. I love the sparse nature of it.

      @@Goldenageofgames I started learning it a couple weeks ago because a job there may be in my future 😅 so that’s what I meant when I said it’s for my own practice as well. For sure! I saw you say something like feeling you’re rambling too much. You’re too hard on yourself. I think especially in the early stages of a playthrough, you’ll feel like that a lot, because you’re trying to establish the game for people. As you keep doing the playthrough, I’m sure you’ll start to get the sense of what things you no longer need to explain or comment on. I used to do more streaming and such ages ago, but just recently got into it again, and I definitely had that same sense of “oh no, I’m talking too much.” From an outside perspective, though, I like your “rambling”. It’s showed me both how knowledgeable you are about Deathlord and how much you like it. I’m still sort of figuring out what kinds of things I want to do let’s plays/streams of. The other day I did a stream with some friends of a weird, somewhat obscure, PS1 game, and that was pretty fun. I have some older friends (I’m a deal younger than you) who have been telling me about old DOS games they loved when they were younger, but have no idea how to access anymore. So maybe more niche/strange retro games or ones that people don’t know how to access? I also like the idea of retrospectives on games that have since been remastered and remade a billion times and passed so far into pop culture that nobody even remembers the original. So things like Silent Hill and Resident Evil (since I’m a big horror fan). I’m also always looking for underrated or overlooked fantasy games (even if just for my own enjoyment, not for any kind of content creation), because I’m also a fantasy nerd, so finding your channel was super cool. My favorite fantasy gem I’ve found so far is Darkstone (an action RPG dungeon crawler) for the PlayStation 1. Just in case you’re ever interested in checking it out. :)

    • @Goldenageofgames
      @Goldenageofgames 13 днів тому

      @ if you are wanting to play DOS games, you want to download something called ExoDos. It has like 8000 DOS games available to it. You can either download the big version of it, that has all of those games with it, or you can download the light version of it, and download individual games as you go. There is a UA-cam channel called The Retro Vault, I mentioned his channel in my video called “A Look At The Beautifully Brutal Gameplay of Deathlord (1987): Pain and Reward (Why I ♥️ This Game)” he plays games off of ExoDOS it might be a good resource for you as well. I think it’s great that you might make your own videos of it. What weird obscure PlayStation game did you play with your friends?

      @@Goldenageofgames Ahh sweet! Thanks for the tip! I watched that vid right after this, but it was laaaaate where I am and I may have fallen asleep. I did look into emulators, and it sounds like DOSbox may be good too, but I haven’t tried it out yet. I’ll check out both and report back. 🫡 The game is called Incredible Crisis. I was away from modern technologies and reeling from a failed Christmas challenge stream and reflecting on what it was I wanted out of content creation, so I was looking up what the weirdest games were that my old laptop could handle. This one consistently came up as the weirdest game for the PlayStation 1, so I called in some friends to experience it blind with me. It’s a mini-game based game about getting a family home in time for grandma’s birthday, despite a suite of wacky mishaps befalling them. It was a good go, but we had some technical mishaps, and we’re all a bit rusty in live commentary, so it may deserve a second go at some point.

      @ Well it sounds like you were pretty groggy watching that other video of mine and you should probably watch it again ;) And I’ve tried to get DOSbox to work but my attempts so far have been in vain. I’ve never heard of incredible crisis. A failed Christmas challenge stream? And that’s too funny you were looking up weird games. The game you’re talking about reminds me of a dream cast game called Shenmui where are you are basically a person. Living in an apartment, having to get a job, to keep up with your family. Live commentary can be pretty fun! I enjoy it very much. Although I speak too fast at times and my words get jumbled. That might be something I’ll work on the rest of my life. Although I do have one let’s play on my channel about a game Neverwinter Nights 2002 and since I am an in person Dungeonmaster, I use that game to practice voice acting and using different accents.

    This is great, Jack! This brings me back, and makes me realize how much I've forgotten. By the way, the race Obake is pronounced "oh-bah-ke" with the "ke" like kettle. Obake is a Japanese word that translates to something like monster or ghost--basically some kind of shapeshifter. This is a cool concept for a race of a class for one of the characters. I remember this game! When First Saturday at the InfoMart and downtown Dallas was strong in the late 90s, My brothers and I received this game as a present from our mom one year for Christmas. Brutal does not describe this game well enough. I don't know how many characters I rolled up before I figured out how to keep my party alive for more than an hour. I still had a copy of it until a couple of years ago when my middle brother asked me if he could have it. I gave it to him because I don't have any plans to play it ever again. I didn't think I'd ever see a video about this game, but thanks a lot! Now I get to see somebody who knows what they're doing lol!😂 And you just earned my subscription!❤❤

      @@BeachTypeZaku hey thank you so much! This game is definitely not well known, but it’s so great to run into someone like you that does remember it! It was pretty dated by the time the late 90s rolled around. And yes, brutal does not always do it justice lol I still think it’s pretty cool that you had a copy of it up until kind of recently. It’s a pretty rare thing nowadays. And I just started my let’s play of the game, because it’s time for me to finally win it! Lol. My first video in my let’s play isn’t out yet but it’s going to be more about a tutorial and the interface mechanics and the character creation, and a little tiny bit of playing the game. But then I’ll be into my full-fledged let’s play after that. I’m so glad that this video brought back some memories for you of Deathlord! And I subscribed right back to you.

    I discovered Deathlord through The Lost Sectors and I played it alongside the game Matt and Chris were playing. I had no past connection to it, nor had I ever heard of it back then. I enjoyed quite a few aspects of it, the mapping, the exploration, the cryptic clues, things like that but I have to say that a lot of what you remember fondly, I think of as poor game design and hope to never see again (pit traps having a risk of damaging you even when you find them). I think you might enjoy it because back then, you had a game and you played that game. Sometimes it was all you had and you find ways around the short-comings, grow to think of them as part of the charm and maybe nostalgia does the rest. I think Deathlord deserves its recent 'resurgence' in attention, even if it hates the player. Good video, it's always nice to see discussions on these games and you covered it fairly well.

      @@Izzanbaad hey great thank you so much! And yes I have quite a lot of nostalgia for this game. And it’s a definite case of to each their own, or one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I enjoyed it because of the reasons that I spoke of, it feels more real to me with aspects of the game play that you think of as negatives. This game turned off a lot of people in its time and rightly so as it was difficult and offputting with its game design. And I say this many times in my video lol, but to me, lol, it makes me feel like I am risking something by playing the game. And not just a game made to give me convenience. But this game is probably why I don’t love playing games nowadays on the hardest settings. I played many games that had better user interfaces, but for some reason this one just stuck with me. I’m currently beginning filming of my let’s play to finally conquer this wonderful game. I’m glad you enjoyed my video! I will look back on it overtime and realize things that I missed or could’ve done better, but I am quite happy with how it came out on the response it’s getting. Pretty great how you played along with them. I’m going to avoid online help if I can like with mapping and clues. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    You should reverse your playlists so that episode 1 is at the top, that way the 'Play All' button doesn't play them in reverse order.
