I have the Olympus Fl-700 WR flash. Do you use a flash extender to elevate the flash above the 150-400 lens?

You have some very patient dragonflies there! I love the 150-400mm for this subject but I tend not to use flash as the extra weight is a problem for me. Our dragonflies like the bright sunlight and, while I would like to control the background brightness, the results are still stunning with this lens.

@14:56 - this is something I dont like about PureRAW 4 - It changes the sharpness as it uses AI machine learning which overrides the actual RAW processing job. I believe PureRAW should have a separate AI processing panel - in this panel, they could include all the AI related variables. Otherwise, the AI driven RAW processing wont be a good option at least at this stage as AI is still more of prototype.

Interesting clip. Although the SH2 with Pro Capture is superb, I am currently shooting butterflies taking off and quite frankly I do not think my OM-1 will lock AF on the butterfly because I am relatively zoomed back due to a necessity for frame space. Consequently the SH1 may be more suitable and just hope the focus will remain ok for some of the immediate images particularly using absolute minimum of f6.3 with an SS of no less than 1/4000 and hoping the ISO is not too high !! Enjoying trying to obtain these images 😊😊

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography 3 дні тому

Butterfly takes offs are erratic and quick, one of the most challenging AF situations for any photography. It really calls for a laser type setup which Congisys makes. I have had some successful such images, but it is the most difficult of "take off" shots probably of any category of flight shots.

Hi Lee. At my age I do not care about cropping an image at any ISO. If I can get the image I want by cropping to one degree or another then I will crop - both photos and video. Obviously I will always attempt to get as near as reasonably possibly. Although now I aim to get a good image the actual action and pose is for me more important 😉🤔😊

    • @leehoyphotography

I absolutely concur Lee. I have some very nice pictures of an Andean Motmot here in Ecuador-all shot at 12.8k to 16k ISO with my Om-1 and 300mm F4 Pro. They like to nest in very dense forrests in ravine walls. Exposed to the right and processed in DXO DeepPrime XD. You can definitely crop, although in this particular instance, didn't need much because we were able to get pretty close. Great tip.

Lee - great advice always! I can’t currently afford the Mk2 but my OM1 continues to astound me. A lot of people locally trying to get shots of the critically endangered Swift Parrot here locally in Australia (most are Canon and a lot of R5s - which I would love for some genres). I got maybe 5 seconds to capture these birds (and Swift = really fast) flying high between two tall trees. I messed up a little but blame my age (74) and general decrepitude. Fortunately I had my OM1 on 50fps, auto ISO and 1/8000 sec but limited to 5 frames. The 1.2 x was selected on my 150-400 BUT my reactions are now so slow that, although I was sill lifting the viewfinder to my eye and pressing the shutter release, I didn’t have time to zoom in. The net result was 5 in-focus shots at ISO 3200, processed via DXO and cropped. What a camera system, and no, I’m certainly not boasting - someone with talent (eg., yourself!) would have done better but I’m only kicking myself a little ;-).

The difference between the OM-1 and the OM-1 Mark II are not as great as the difference in some other bodies, so do not stress about upgrading. Just keep practicing and with time you will continue to improve that skill! You got some shots with the key part of it all! Hope to get to Australia to do an OM System Workshop at some point!

Hey Lee, I actually shoot in Pro-Cap SH2, but use it as if it is regular SH2 the majority of the time. This gives me that advantage that if I am waiting for some action I do not have to change modes, but if I see something happening quickly, I can just push the shutter all the way without buffering any shots, or maybe 1 or 2. I find this a much more flexible way to use the SH2 feature.

Very good topic. I shoot indoor volleyball with the OM-1. My ISO is always above 1600 (peaks at 6400 in really poorly lit gyms) and I'm setting customized WB all the time. My minimum shutter speed is always 1/500s but ideally should be 1/1000s. I've started shooting with the Olympus f1.2 primes (17, 25, and 45mm) for this because they are faster and have more "pop" than my Olympus 12-40 and 40-150 f2.8 zooms. Because I'm using more fast primes while shooting volleyball, I'm cropping nearly every shot now, but I like the results better. A real game changer is AI enabled post processing for noise reduction and sharpening. I love DXO PhotoLab for this. It all works because most viewers are looking at my pictures on their phones and computers. If I had to blow them up to wall size you will see the defects, but nobody does this so it is really a moot point.

I like your passion on the om1 I have both , and most of the lens you have. Here’s my problem see if you can help me. I all so shoot Nikon,Sony,Canon full frame. Because each system has a few lens that I love. And with the micro 4/3 I always fell like I am missing out on image quality.how can I only shoot with one system. I have to many choices, can you give me an ideas on what to do? Not to mention the financial burden of all this gear? Help me I love your channel!

I assure you, you will have the same image quality with OM System as any other gear. I could post my shots with folks with other systems, and you wouldn't know. It is either in the post processing, the shutter speed, etc. Not sure the specifics, but you should easily be able to shoot with the same quality. Watch my video on post processing, travel workflow, shooting at High ISO, etc. When you say image quality, be more specific?

@@leehoyphotography like the sharpness and the silky, smooth backgrounds, it’s like the images have the 3d effect popping out at you with the image separation on full frame. Don’t get me wrong. I love my OM1 especially love the 150 to 400 lens. I’m trying my hand at wildlife photography with it, but mainly I am a portrait photographer. I want to be a micro 4/3 guy full time. And I should sell off all the other gear. And lord knows I could use the money it would bring thanks for you help.

Wouldn’t it be great if in the Oly display it showed how far the focus was. Then you could focus on say, distant trees, and set them out of limit for birds flying in front. Or is that possible without guessing? Also I noticed that your AF was set C-AF+TRM and bird tracking. I thought this was no longer recommended.

Your clip is so so true Lee 👌👏. Shame you are not in London UK. Would be great to go on photo walk or trip with you. I tend to always shoot Manual mode and use MF as much as AF. Recently started trying more wildlife video particularly slow motion (not S&Q) which is a steep learning curve. In the end the most important factor is getting out 📷🎥 enjoying yourself and having fun 😊

Lee, what you cover in your video is soooooo true, since I’ve spent time mastering my camera and going through my initial steps when I take the camera out. Checking all of the above. I’ve also made many of the mistakes you cover in this video. Taken me a while to learn the Olympus OM1 which has been mostly down to your videos at least 85% keep up the amazing work!!

Sorry to hear about all of your troubles Lee. I hope things start looking up again soon. As I said in a previous comment, I hear your voice in my head quite often, especially recently when I couldn't figure out why I couldn't focus on subjects (close but not that close). When I got back home, I found the distance limiter on my lens had been switched on. Duh. Mistakes are how we learn!
