Walk for Ukraine day 19: Alnaryd to Karlskrona

At last the final day of my walk in Sweden came! It has been a struggle to get this far, and I'm proud of what I have achieved. I'm also thankful for the people I've met along the way, their hospitality and care for the Ukrainian people. I have learned a lot, seen a lot and experienced a ton! This day I knew would be tricky. As usual, approaching a major town means paved roads, and that was the...

Well, what a day! Went trough many historical places that I never had heard about. This part of Sweden saw a lot of war back in 16th century, as well as people migrating to the US in the 19th century. It must have been hard living of the land here. There are lots and lots of these handmade stonewalls in the landscape. From names of places I pass I understand the land has been inhabited long ago...

The day started with a drizzle and traffic noise, and found that I had pitched my tent rather close to a busy road! I had the rest of the pizza, put on my rain gear and started along road #122. Soon I took a smaller road and found myself in the countryside without any traffic. The weather changed into sunny, and it was pleasant to walk. The going was easy, dirt roads mixed with smaller paved ro...

Arrived at lunch by train to Växjö, and had my goal set on Ingelstad. There are several nice paths leading south from the city, and I enjoyed the scenic views along the lake. Soon I could see the silhouette of Teleborg Castle (Teleborgs slott), beautifully situated in the northern Linnaeus University area, near Lake Trummen, 4-5 km south of the city center. However the trail I had chosen took m...

Closing in on a major city usually means paved roads. I had a thorough look at my map before leaving Oskar with a heartfelt thank you. The way I took was rather scenic and not that hard at all. The tricky part was the Växjö airfield and the adjacent gravel pit. I was not sure I could pass through there. Well the morning turned into lunch, and the going was ok. Passed the Örsholm estate, they ha...

After breakfast with my host Gun, (porridge, tea and sandwiches) I took farewell and started walking. The morning was clear, and I had a swift tempo. Soon I stumbled into a rabbit hunt when a dog chasing it turned up on the road. I think I might have destroyed his search because I walked exactly where the rabbit came from! Maybe I saved it, who knows? The first half of the day I had good roads,...

Going back to the beginning of December 2022 I woke up in Kaxholmen with a fever. I was not well at all. So after saying goodbye to the peeps at the church I took the bus, then the train, back home. It took me 6 weeks to get well. This meant that the time window I had to walk to Ukraina was gone as I was due to go filming Via Suecia in the Swedish mountains. Gränna. I remember when I was just a small kid and my parents took us children for a holiday in the south of Sweden. I left Bygdegården after saying goodbye to Camilla in the early morning. I must complement her and the association behind Bygdegården - it was clean, warm and even had a kitchen. Thank you! I usually hike in the autumn/winter, I think this was in September/October. After Porto I followed the coast, can recommend it. As it was during Covid I brought my tent. The Portuguese people I met were very friendly and speak better English than the Spanish IMHO. Besides I found that the price level of food etc is lower in Portugal. Wish you a great experience! /Ben

To answer your Viking question....Yes they did raid Portugal and Spain, there are records of this assault coming down from Galicia to Porta and to Lisbon around 800 CE. I am aiming to walk the Camino from Portugal to Spain this year so I make it my business to know the Viking connections. I visited Egypt twice in the last few years and wondered about Viking connections there as well. Sure enough there are records of Vikings in Alexandria. They really did explore! PS Watching your videos for tips as I plan to camp along the way as well.

Was is even tracked in January or you were mostly the first one coming trough?Haven`t you considered pulkas except from backpack, how heavy it was at the start? How can I pay to get the keys to the cabins? greetings from Gdansk, Poland.

Hi! I followed the winter trails (red crosses). In some areas snow mobiles are allowed on the same trail. In deep snow the summer blazing will disappear. Depending on the weather the trails can be tracked (if you’re lucky) or not. I can travel more swiftly with backpack, and buy food along the way. The Swedish huts have an emergency room open so no need for keys. If hiking in Norway you’ll need a key. My backpack weights in around 8 kg in winter ex food, fuel and water. Best wishes, Ben
