RAV4 3SGTE SWAP EPISODE 3: MANUAL TRANSMISSION SWAP AND WALKTHROUGH
Переглядів 3,4 тис.Рік тому
Hey everyone! Episode Three is here at last. In today's episode, I'm going to take you with me as we prep the Rav to receive it's manual transmission in place of the factory automatic. Note that this video will not show any of how the transmission mounts into the car or onto the engine, just the hard parts of converting your automatic car over to a manual. Hope you enjoy!

This is my 2006 Silverado 2500HD, 6.0 LQ4 with a BTR stage 2 truck cam, Speed Engineering long tube headers and full 3" exhaust, no cats. Making this video because there wasn't a lot of trucks documented with this cam and hardly any idle videos, lot of guys say it doesn't chop but I can confirm that's bullshit. makes great power from 2500RPM and on

Did you have to get it tuned?
@@JaydebJagmohan Yes, tuning is required with any camshaft that is not a stock grind. It will drive like shit if not.
I'm grabbing a 97 with a blown motor tomorrow - I can't decide between the 1K FE and the 3K GTE swap
I got this cam in my 5.3 it definitely has some chop to it nothing crazy.
Nasty ls1! Stock bottom end?
@@gregstultz5063 Stock 127,000 mile bottom end, yessir
So I've done this swap, and when I did it I clearanced the bracket in both spots no issues with it, also you can use the caldina power steering pump, just have to put a small tube from the rav4 one on it, I personally moved the dipstick bracket to mount to the top of the stock caldina down pipe, wouldn't recommend that one tho, also all these things have lasted over 35,000 miles so far, I roadtrip a lot.
Did the same swap but with the 3sge beams vvti it rips man for wiring you may want to go with Doug from wiregap bit pricey but really good
My 1996 rav engine with the distributor has rod knock. Can I swap the short block with a newer 3sfe from a 1998 rav4 engine with the coil pack. Is that possible
is it a master flow 50 series or delta flow?
I can’t believe I found this page, I have a 98 Rav 4 AWD 4 door and I’m looking to get a 98-00 Camaro. Love the content.
Sounds sick
nice vid. you sound like moistcritical
What is actually needed to make this running function for a swap... like is this a plug-and-play system
It is largely plug and play, provided you have someone such as Doug from Wiregap make you a harness. This car is running now and I have a few hours of content I need to edit to put together in the final video.
You ever dyno this?
@@patricklala2366 Just recently did. 427rwhp, 390wtq
Hey bro loved the video and appreciate the content 🤙. This is possible in a 3door 94 model that is auto right? Looking to buy a 3d 94 model for 2500$aud so 1700usd that's auto with really bad paint but a clean interior and exterior
Yes, absolutely. I just got mine running and during this weekend. There is only minor differences in the early Ravs versus this one, mainly in the transmission mount. I am going to release one final, mega video on everything and go over my thoughts.
Awesome work! And great camera work. Really informative and gives a real perspective on the work needed to do the swap. I thought it was fairly plug and play. Im curious how difficult it would be to retain the automatic from the caldina for those who like them. Gonna be a screamer.
It is mostly plug and play, provided you have the correct parts hahaha. As far as the Caldina automatic, I know a few have done it but no one has written it up yet.
I see this is a old video and the truck sounds real good.I’m about to order that cam to put in my 6.0 and was wondering if your running stock injectors and fuel pump and some people say you can pull timing at idle and make this cam sound choppy in a 6.0
Apologies for the late reply. I was running stock injectors and fuel pump for this. Camshafts don't really require any change in fueling for LS motors, at least in my experience. My '99 LS1 is running one of the bigger off the shelf cams from GPI and is still stock fuel all the way.
@@martinmotorscoHello I own a Chevrolet express 6.0 LQ4 with 90,000 miles, I live in France in a region where the climate is temperate, I do 6000 miles per year, I drive mainly in the summer, and I tow a 6000 lbs trailer, should I stick to the oil recommended by the manufacturer 5W30 or can I use a 5W40 for example???
I had the SS4 in my 5th gen and loved it. Did you have to fly cut on the ls1? And what kinda power does she make if you know?
apologies for the late response. No fly cut on this one, even with a .040 thinner gasket. Compression somewhere in the 10:9-11.1 range. No clue on power, it's a grudge stick car with 4.56s and some mild weight reduction. 😊
What numbers did it put down?
Never had it dynoed, probably somewhere in the low 400s. Still has stock 853 heads, just with a thinner gasket for a mild compression bump.
How can I get in contact

Thank you for doing a video on the accessory mounting.
Glad to see the series continuing
Thank you for watching! Trying to keep on it but I work for a ag shop and we are deep in hay season right now!
@@martinmotorsco any chance you can go over the alternator mounting as well?
@@hayame1924I definitely can. Car is currently at the tuning shop right now, but once I get it back, expect content to resume as normal.
Can't wait. Got a 2 door rav and have been thinking about doing this swap
Good to see another Fbody in OR. You have any issues with DEQ with the true duals? I have a catback on mine currently and contemplating catless longtube setup.
I'm in Lane County, no DEQ down here and my car has all emissions and EVAP codes turned off.
@@martinmotorsco Nice. Unfortunately I’m stuck with DEQ up here in Multnomah. That cam sounds good. 🪓🪓🪓

Excellent information!
That is a BIG compliment coming from you, Paul. I have watched a lot of your videos since September and you are a godsend!
I am looking forward to doing the same on my 2004 RAV4. My model is the 1.8L FWD, is it possible to do the swap on a FWD or do I have to make it AWD?
To preface this, I don't know how the second generation Ravs are laid out compared to my first gen, but in essence, the 3S engine bolts up to any S series transmission(Celica, MR2, Camry etc. etc.). 3/4 engine mounts are on the transmission itself and none are on the transfer case, so in theory, you would not need to make it AWD unless you really wanted to. There's nothing wrong with doing this swap to a FWD Rav, many have done it. Mine was already AWD though and I wanted to keep that, plus if you have watched the intro short and the first episode, you'd find that the whole reason I even started this was because of a bad transfer case. Hope this helps, feel free to reach out to me on Facebook at Martin Motorsports & Co if you have any further questions.
@@martinmotorsco Thank you so much! Really appreciate the help
I’m also looking to swap my 04 Rav since the 2AZ that was in it blew. Mine is already the AWD model. If you have any info on how that’s going I’d love to hear it!
The 2ar also makes a lot of power if you haven't considered that. 270whp without turbo on Marc's last build from Frankenstein Motorworks. 2.5L, excellent torque, aluminium block, and an abundance of engines/parts since it was used in several vehicles over a decade of production. I don't think there is any 4.2 of this swap out there. People have not done many swaps on the Rav4.2, whereas many have on the Rav4.1 gens. I have a spare 3sgte from my MR2, but I think I might go the 2ar route, if not 2gr. Still years away from tinkering around on mine though... I love these videos! They get people excited and start talking about swaps. To Martin Motorsports, thanks for sharing your experience!

This is awesome, thank you for documenting the 3sgte swap like this. It will be a great reference when I am ready to swap mine!
Good stuff, keep it coming! stoked to see more 3sgte rav4's making it into the world!
so pumped for the next episode, i plan to do this swap hopefully later this year!
Hell yeah, subbed.
I'm considering to geht the speed engineering true dual exhaust, but I want to put them after my existing cats. I run a mild cam, is the drone depending on load at these rpms or is it anyways droning? Thanks in advance
Always droning, gets worse with load.
Wouldn’t it be easier to pull the harness from inside out then drop the engine with everything still hooked up? Instead of removing harness from engine
If I had to it over again, I'd agree that it would be easier to remove the harness off the engine when it's out. That's my plan for the GTE when I put the entire combination back in.
@@martinmotorsco ahah we live and learn, I will be doing this swap in march, already refreshed the gen 5, now im waiting till the weather gets a lil better up here in Toronto!
Looks great! Definitely looking forward to the end results of this. Are you also planning to swap it to a manual transmission as well?
I am, yes. Going to use a stock E250F transmission, I will be making another video like that when we do the swap, that will probably be a couple episodes away.
Thanks for making this video. I'm sure many Gen 1 RAV4 owners appreciate it.
Our pleasure!
my dream to do this to my 4 door as well

how do you like the speed engineering setup? i have the headers now with an open y pipe but i really need to quiet ber down
I like it, but if you want quiet, this is the opposite of it. Super loud outside because the kit comes with bullet mufflers with no packing inside. The figment is eh, but for the price you really couldn't complain.
Oh, and it drones AWFUL from 1500-1800RPM
@@martinmotorsco thanks for the feedback man! can you really hear the difference between the y pipe and the x pipe in person?
@@swmo_SS this was bone stock before I tore it apart, couldn't really answer that haha.
