I applied for a GC program and interviewed at one of the programs. This program only allowed 7 applicants into their program a year so it was insanely competitive. But I didn’t match and the alternate one offered to me was not in a state my husband could work in. So, I decided to walk away. This is a competitive field and I didn’t want to wait possibly one or more years to get into programs. I was devastated and didn’t know what career choice to do now. I looked into speech language pathology programs, sign language interpreting careers, and fortunately after all my research efforts I found my dream career. This career was EXACTLY the career I had been searching for when I had applied for GC programs. Currently I’m getting my masters in Applied Behavior Analysis and I’m specializing in Autism studies. Like I said, THIS is my dream career and fits the vision I have had as a career all along. I am absolutely in love with this field and so thankful I didn’t get into GC programs because I think this is a much better fit for what I want to do. I wanted a job where I could be more hands on with families of loved ones diagnosed with genetic diseases and this career really allows me to do that. So, don’t be discouraged if you didn’t get in. I interviewed people who said to took them 3 years or less to get into a GC program. So, it’s definitely doable! If this is something you love keep going! But if you feel there may be something out there for you that better fits your career aspirations, don’t be afraid to explore those options! Best of luck everyone!!

Thanks for your response. I'm on my third pregnancy in less than a year (no living children) and have my first scan tomorrow. I haven't felt any symptoms with any pregnancies and they've all been bad news. First was a blighted ovum, second were twins that stopped developing at 5 weeks, this one I'm not sure but have a bad feeling about. Doctors just say to keep trying again and that IVF won't improve our odds. The idea of just trying with repeat losses feels like a steep hill to climb not sure what other options we have. All RPL came back normal including karyotype for both of us. Thank you for sharing your journey it really helps.

I’m experiencing my first blighted ovum at 21 years old. I went to my doctor’s appointment just yesterday and hearing or seeing no heartbeat broke my heart completely. They couldn’t really determine whether it really is a miscarriage because I’m too early in but this would have been my second child which by now there should be a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I scheduled another appointment in two weeks to have another ultrasound and determine whether it really is a pregnancy loss but i know in my heart that it truly is… I feel like my world is crashing down. I feel like I’ve lost another life and it’s so hard moving forward without having to know more details about the baby…. I just hope he/she didn’t go through pain and they’re happy where ever they are now…

Katie, We are just getting started in the college process. My daughter has been accepted at 5 colleges and we are still waiting on 2 more. She plans to get a Undergrad degree in Biology and then apply for Grad School. Our thinking for a biology degree would be a hedge bet just in case she doens't like the genetics classes. Our focus for Undergrad has been for schools that have a R1 designation, but one of the schools that we really like and anticipate to get good merit from is not an R1 designated school, however they boast about hands-on in the laboratory and in the field, and internationally recognized for teaching and research strengths in emerging areas ranging from molecular to global biology. Our question is in your opinion do you think it matters whether we attend a R1 university vs a non R1 university? I might add one more tidbit, Option #2 has the Graduate program for Genetics so we were thinking that it may be easier to get accepted being an alumnus.

Hello! Thanks for watching. I do not think that graduating with a degree from an R1 school vs. non-R1 school will make any bit of difference. If I were talking to your daughter, I would congratulate her on her acceptance at the five schools so far and encourage her to make the decision based on her best fit. She can start planning how she will take pre-reqs and finding opportunities to shadow GCs/learn more about genetic counseling, and volunteer on or off of campus in advocacy or research roles!

Hi Jonathan. If you're here because of a recent loss, I'm sorry for what you're going through. I think everyone should use whatever word feels right for them. If I were seeing a patient, I would echo their language. The word a patient chooses to describe their loss often depends on many factors including how far along the loss was, how the person is conceptualizing the loss, their worldview, religion/spirituality, and what they have already been through. I thought of my first miscarriage as a baby. For my other four early losses, they did not yet feel like babies, they felt like pregnancies or like potential future babies maybe because the previous loss or to protect myself.

I just found out about genetic counseling. I was thinking of switching my career path as I was originally planning on getting a PhD in Neuroscience. I am an alumni from UCSD (great school) with a degree in neurobiology, a 3.51 GPA, Hispanic (I don't know if this actually matters haha), and have worked as research associate at a molecular lab. It seems rather difficult to find in-depth admission stats for GC programs, but given my background do you think I could have a chance at getting into one GC program? Unfortunately, I haven't shadowed any professionals on the field but I am planning on contacting a few genetic counselors to see if that would be an option. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I really wanted to get testing done and wasn’t sure how to go about that or what to ask for, so this was just the video I needed! Our baby was measuring 6 weeks, 1 day on the day I started having cramping and heavy bleeding. We saw the heartbeat (it was low at 90 bpm) 3 days before. A whole ELEVEN days later I have passed what I believe is the embryo + gestational sac. I thought I must have passed it without noticing because so much time had passed. So thankful to at least have a chance to find out what sex and how many chromosomes! Btw this is my second miscarriage. I was not able to identify what part was the baby in the first miscarriage.

What about when you are doing IVF and continuously get a blighted ovum or chemical pregnancy then what? It’s extremely frustrating especially when you’re using PGT tested high-grade embryos, but yet this happens over and over again.

This happened to me a few weeks ago.. It’s so frustrating!! PGT was supposed to screen out chromosomal abnormal embryo but after miscarriage doctor said it was because of that.. then why did we spent thousands to test it?

are you able to expand on specific experiences in applicants that stood out to you? I am currently working in behavioral health in a clinical setting, have previously worked as an administrative assistant at a home health care business and as a barista at starbucks, I have a bachelors in biology and concentrated my upper level course work on genetics and I still am not even getting the time of day from employers hiring GCAs in my area! I know the roles are extremely competitive so I am looking for experiences to help me be a more desirable and qualified applicant!

This happened to me over the weekend. Started bleeding 4 days ago. Progressively got worse. Went to my OB and she said my uterus was empty. No sac no embryo. Nothing. Must have past it over the weekend? Apparently I don’t need mediation or procedure because there is nothing there. I’m not sad or happy. Just kind of shrug my shoulders and hope it doesn’t happen again. I was supposed to be 6 weeks today. Started bleeding around 5 weeks 4 days after intercourse.

I’m so happy seeing this video. I had an embryonic pregnancy but my worry is will I get pregnant or be able to have children again? Is there any chance for me because have not heard anyone who when through child birth testimony.

Hi, it's been a year. How are things going? I had 3 blighted ovums then a healthy pregnancy 4 months later. Now it's been 4 years and we are trying again but unfortunately another blighted ovum. Hoping next time is better luck!

I think this is happening to me right now. I have to go back for a second scan on Wednesday but, the sac looked empty to me. The Dr. wanted to wait a week to confirm
