I think you nailed it, $15 is a great point to start, especially when you are in discovery phase. As far as restaurants you kind of have to look at the wine list and maybe stick to the middle of that list in terms of price. That could be $40 to who knows. It depends on the restaurant. Most restaurants double and then some the price (1x, 2x or even 3x? yikes). Try to pick a wine you know and like... or ask the server what wines are popular since the regular clientele will be picking a value wine that delivers above its price. Look around the room see what is being drunk. Do this especially in France and places you are not a regular at. As you will not have time to "learn"... so go with advice. Servers never try to hurt their customers. Also many restaurants buy from a winery direct or a specific distributor that gets them "volume discounts". The restaurants often get the wine at 30%+ below retail, meaning they can really make a killing on that bottle price. But remember the wine is a big part of a restaurant's profit. They need those wine sales to really make a living. Especially if it is a small family run place. The food is often kept cheaper so that wine sales bring in more profits. Also if you are learning wine, go to a wine store where a sommelier is picking the wines being sold. And make friends with that person, It will rocket up your experience.

I use the schema for reds: 13.5%ABV < light bodied; 13.6% to 14.4% < light to medium bodied; medium bodied< 14.5% -14.7%; medium to full bodied < 14.8% to 14.9%; full bodied >= 15% ABV

Cabernet Sauvignon; Petite Syrah and Verdot as well. Surprised you didn't have Zinfandel in your list

I dont think I've ever seen Cecilia Beretta wines, but if I come across it i'll be sure to check it out on your recommendation. I live close to Valdobbiadene and If you are ever in the area be sure to try prosecco from Le Bertole, wonderful staff and wines to choose from. They also have a passito - made from Glera grapes. Le Bertole is one place I always go back to, and is underrated. Should mention also Canevel Spumanti, it has an incredible location and the pedigree to back up their high prices, but worth checking out.

As far as longevity is concerned, Grange hermitage is Shiraz and is one of the great wines of the world and is known for its longevity.

Love the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Recently began exploring the Rioja wines.

If you keep the cage on and firmly hold your thumb over the cork as you twist the bottle it will open without flying off and hurting someone lol!

Some people use a milk frother to aerate wine in the glass. Not nearly so classy but it seems to work well. The problem with a decanter is you maybe poured more into it than you end up drinking.

I feel like the “age thing” got me there….
