The Spiral Highway and Lolo Pass | S02E03
@MotoVenturer Season 02 - Episode 03
Enjoyed the company of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA), Idaho Chapter, at Camp Grizzly in the Saint Joe National Forest then headed for the Spiral Highway at Lewiston. Fantastic! Then got Google-lost when the navigation took me into dirt tractor roads in rolling hills before winding my way down Road 170 to Highway 12, the scenic byway leading me to Lolo Pass and into Montana. I rolled into Polson about 8pm and rested for the night. Wonderful day and place to ride!

@MotoVenturer Season 02 - Episode 01 Day 1 has my leaving Vancouver Island and crossing the border into the US to start my epic solo motorcycle adventure around the continental USA. Today I take highway 20 through the Northern Cascade Mountains. The scenic route is marred somewhat by the threat of forest fires, of which I catch glimpses of as I ride past. I spend the night at Pearrygin Lake Sta...

Solo motorcycle ride on Finlayson Arm Road towards Goldstream Park. This is an excellent motorcycle ride for adventure bikes (the road is pretty torn up and is very steep) with beautiful forest views and lots of twisties. It is a good shortcut from the Saanich Peninsula to the upper island without going through the traffic snarls of Greater Victoria. A fun motorcycle touring road! #motorcycleto...

Great video! Wondering what you use for your microphone on the trip and also for the voice overs. Keep it up on the trip be safe 👍
Thank you! I have the media mod for my GoPro without external mics (I'm learning about and investing in external mics for the future).
Thank you for showing us this lovely part of the US. Can’t wait to see the geographic changes in all the states. Really enjoying your videos. You have the right amount of interesting commentary.
Nice video and trip. What was the time of year you were riding (I am guessing not Nov/Dec)?
The trip was in September and October.
Looking forward to the new Season!
Agreed, both the Spiral Highway and Hwy 12 are amazing routes! Being able to travel those gravel side roads is the advantage of a bike like the Vstrom 650. I'm not at the level to take my 04 Goldwing there, just yet. The only contact I had with the CMA was at the Motorcycle show in Abbotsford several years ago and they seemed like really caring folk. Looking forward to Season 2!
V-Strom is super versatile and allows me to get (into then) out of trouble! I met more of the CMA in Arkansas later in the trip. Cheers!
Should have mentioned that I lived in Calgary from 1999 to 2017. During that time I literally explored all of Montana, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Wyoming etc. PCH.
You might enjoy my earlier videos on a trip from BC to Arizona (and back). Probably covers a lot of places you are familiar with! ua-cam.com/play/PLDqs05UED6E6b7dZmNVPvBXlpYU8zxFB3.html
Excellent video. Omg brought back some fond memories. I’ve been there done that a dozen times. I wasn’t sure if you were aware that from Clarkston WA to Enterprise OR is an incredible road that follows the snake river canyon. Just my favourite.
It's been mentioned a few times to me and is on my list of "to dos" now. Not done it yet!
Nice travel videos! I've been to most of the same places in the Pacific Northwest. On my 650 V-Strom no less! I don't know how you can ride behind that stock windscreen! LOL
The 650 V-Strom is an excellent all-rounder, isn't it?
Hi mate we are doing a 2 month tour of the USA in 2027 can I ask you how many ks / miles a day were you averaging we are coming over from New Zealand
It would vary based upon how many spots I wanted to stop and explore off-bike. I probably averaged something like 600-700 km or 375-440 miles a day (there were a few days I didn't ride at all, excluded from any calculations). Just remember, this was a riding trip - I'd probably average more like 350 km a day on a more typical tourist trip. Two months is a long time for a trip, but America is a very big place. You'll have to pick a bit what to see and what to miss if it doesn't fit in. You'll find lots of ideas in this video series! :-) New Zealand is somewhere I'll get to but haven't been yet. Hope your journey is epic!
@MotoVenturer you would love the roads her in New Zealand and yes we are planning atvthe moment where we want to visit cheers for the reply mate yours Gary
The Grapevine Hill was in California, going through the hills between LA and the central valley. Mostly covered by interstate 5 now. The Spiral highway has always been the Spiral Highway, at least for all of my 68 years and beyond. It's a lot of fun at 110 in the right car. Up or down. lol. You just have to remember there are no good guardrails anywhere on it. In the approximate middle of it there is a small artesian well where you could get water for your car, or you. There's also a kind of not-so-secret pet cemetary there too. Great hill.
You are correct! But Wikipedia says Ryan changed the lyrics to Grapevine Hill later on, to better fit with the song, and the original was based on the Spiral Highway. Either way, a great old song and an incredible road.
I visited the spiral a few years ago. We went up and down multiple times. Amazing road and view.
Yeah, why not? I enjoyed both directions and you might only get there once! :-)
I'm about to buy a 2009 v strom 650. I'll have to check out that road some day. It's a day's ride there for me, I think. Cheers!
You won't regret the bike or the ride - both are excellent
So enjoying your channel after having found you searching for information on Porpoise Bay. This journey looks to be quite fantastic and I very much look forward to seeing more. Love that I get to ride on the handle bars. And see the big skies that look like paintings.
Porpoise Bay was splendid and I hope you found my video there useful. This trip around America was truly epic. Glad to have you along for the journey!
@@MotoVenturerThe Sunshine Coast will be our next road trip, hoping to snag a campsite at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.
I love that feeling too.
Stayed at Deyo Reservoir just outside of Orofino Idaho last year before going over Lolo pass. Nice campsite run by the power company.
Had to look up the Deyo Reservoir but the photos there look wonderful. Perhaps next time!
@@MotoVenturer The switchbacks climbing up from highway 12 are wonderful
Really enjoying your trip! I'm a lifelong rider but haven't ridden for years. Maybe it's time to get back out there. Inspired by your trip. Stay safe and have fun!
Glad to hear and hope to see you out on the road!
Very well presented documentary ....... Enjoying riding your motorcycle vicariously through the great United States. Great start to my morning . . . . . For anyone who wants the adventurous feeling of being on the open road traveling first-class and light-and-fast by motorcycle!

What was the sleeping pad you were using?
Light-speed 3D lite flexform sleep pad. Self-inflating, 4" thick. Non-slippery fabric. Wonderful to sleep on, but bulky. 28" long when rolled up. I just looked for it and I think it is discontinued. The closest I found was this, which is very similar - www.amazon.com/Lightspeed-Outdoors-FlexForm-Self-Inflating-Insulated/dp/B09WB4W32X
I was wondering the same. Thanks for the question & the link!
It’s brilliant that you’re still making these brilliant videos always look forward to seeing your next video and love listening to your stories of life and so impressed with the old V Strom how it’s still going
Appreciate it, my friend. Comments like yours make my day! Yes, that bike has been super reliable - very good quality on a long trip like this!
Nice. I used to rid to the top weekly back in the 80's. The trip down the back side is even better. We used to get Buffalo Burgers and a game of pool down the backside.
Thanks for sharing, I plan on riding this on Labor Day
Mug gee own Rim! 0:45
I rode this once (two vids on it). I plan to go back sometime but want to ride down the eastern side of the mountain next time to see what's out there.
When you stopped on the road for the bug I thought it was the infamous earth shattering bump I discovered on that road.
Haha.. I've been bounced off my seat a few times on that bump you mention.
I got caught in the heat dome in Kelowna while touring that year, I remember Lytton registered I think 49 degrees Celcius, hotter than the all time record temp for Las Vegas. The next day the town burned to the ground.
Insane weather, and devastating to Lytton.
How long to get a full motorcycle license on the island?
If you already have a car license you can get your full motorcycle license in under two months if you can book the tests in quickly enough. If you don't have a car license it is a full two years with a novice license before you get your full license.
Nice ride, thanks for sharing.
Plan on riding the 191 > 180 loop next month (06/24). Thanks for the pre-run!
191 is best ridden S>N as you’re mostly gaining elevation. You’re in for a treat. Ridden 191 several times in both directions and Clifton-Morenci to Springerville is definitely the way to go. Watch out for deer and cattle. Great Mexican food in Springerville. BTW 191 was originally known as the Anti-Christ Hwy due to shield number of 666.
It would be great to hear what the settings really are. Sag, clickers setting ?
You're in luck. CFmoto has just done a world launch of the 450mt adv bike & I do believe its right up your alley. Bonus is its even cheaper & CFmoto has been in the market for some years. Personally I'm deciding btwn this Kove 450 rally & the aforementioned CFmoto 450mt. Go check it out before plunking down your money
I'm so glad you posted this. We are planning to hike a section of the Sunshine Coast Trail starting at that trailhead, but we only have 2-wheel drive vehicles to get there. We may be revising our plans. However, only the fittest of hikers can do the whole trail in seven days. We were planning seven days to get just back to near Powell River. We previously hiked a different section over seven days, and the two sections combined still wouldn't get us all the way back to Saltry Bay. Anyway, Lund is a great day trip for the Sunshine Coast.
Yes, I personally wouldn't do this road in a 2-wheel drive vehicle. It's probably more the ground clearance I'd worry about. Hope you have a great trip!
Thank you for the video, enjoyed watching and imagining myself riding this area. Do you live in Langford? What would you say some of the pros and cons of the area are? Subbed and liked, cheers. P.S. you should post more of these you are a natural.
Not in Langford, but within Greater Victoria. I find it a great place to live for stable economy, safety, climate, and relaxed vibe. Very much appreciate your comments and support!
@@MotoVenturer Pleasure man. I suggest considering offering rides around town for the tourists maybe even locals; could be a nice source of income and fun. They could rent their own bikes and you would show them around, hell, I'll even be your first client.
Check your sag. It's probably too soft two up.
It was indeed too soft as it was setup for solo riding.
If you put your Strom up on the center stand (with the rear wheel off the ground it), start it, shift into 2nd and rev it a bit, traction control should turn itself off. You can also pull the fuse, but you have to take the seat off for that.
If you raise the question, someone will answer! Thanks, Chris.
What bike is that also love the content bro keep it up
2009 Suzuki V-Strom 650. Great mid-sized bike! Thanks!
Nice Review. I am a dealer for the Kove bikes in Denver, Colorado. we got three bikes and recently and I took a 450 out for a ride and was very impressed. Love the lightweight and great power.
Thank you, sir! Bike seems to be impressing most who ride it.
Great review and fantastic presentation! Also congrats on your new bike 🎉
Thanks! 😊
Get a 51 tooth rear sprocket, helps in slow sections
Yes, that's an option. Need more kms in the stock format first as no problems so far, just a bike that love's revs.
What were your suspension settings and sag? Thanks!
@@silverhill377 Was set by the boys in the shop, so I'm not sure, but definitely softened considerably. Fully adjustable suspension, so they were able to really change the characteristics of the bike. They kept the notes! 🙂
@@MotoVenturer Thanks for the response! Mine is close. Think I need more sag. Love the bike. Still dialing in.
@@silverhill377 Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Sag will probably do the final tweaking
Glad you like the Kove. I have one in order with Kove Canada that should be delivered at Tuff City late may. I can’t wait.
That's fantastic!
Are the wheels tubeless?
Tubed. I'm not sure any dual-sport has tubeless.
Thanks for sharing!! We got hassled by a "forest management" at the beginning of the North Island 1000 last summer '23, so agree with you. Yes, enjoy the ride. Isn't that why we ride? Will ride this route next time!!
I did the North Island 1000 several years back during a forestry strike. All the roads were barren and free of logging trucks, which made for a great trip. Thanks for the comment and enjoy riding!
Set the sag correctly, and adjust compression and rebound for your speeds. It will work great even if you are slower rider
Will be trying this next. Cheers
Very good video, regarding oil changes, is it true that after the 1st break-in change, then you have to change every 500km until you reach 2000km and after that it is every 2000km? Although depending on which change it seems exaggerated, 2000 reminds me a lot of enduro ones, which are hourly oil changes. Thank you so much.
Yes, it is a race bike and those are the oil change numbers as per the manual. Cheers
Some of the other videos available on UA-cam suggest that the settings are stiff from the factory shipment and not often adjusted during the PDI, which is easy to believe. I think worth noting, is that most reviewers that are not pleased with the stiff suspension are 1) riding the bike relatively slowly in respect to its design, and 2) riding the bike light - without the typical camping travel gear/kit and supplies that a rider would take on a week long (or longe BDR tour. In case number 2, this could amount to an additional 40+ lbs of static load on the bike, which would be handled nicely by the realtively stiff factory setting. For a bike like this, I would suggest first setting up the spring sag rate properly for the rider weight (or loaded BDR tour weight), then back off the compression and rebound damping adjustments (front and rear). Then go ride the typical bumpy road your expecting on yojr rides. Bring some basic tools and slowly increase the damping settings until you find your sweet spot. It'll take time, but this is how its done unless you're buying a very expensive bike with electronic responding active suspension. The Kove is not that expensive, so ya gotta do the work. Nice basic review btw. It's good to see some roads from home on these videos.
Excellent advice and much appreciated! Fortunately the guys at Tuff City Powersports will be able to assist me to get started, but I'm going to need to learn how to tune it myself to ensure I get the best ride depending upon conditions. I plan to load up on camping gear et al when riding the BDRs.
In Europe they say open and close, even in Quebec. To your point, oil changes and other maintenance are dependant on use. I never skimp on oil changes, I don’t believe in extended oil change intervals, oil is the bloodline of the engine. Second, suspension, it sounds like it has motocross style valving, it could use a spring adjustment, and a revalve but that is dependent on the rider. To be honest, most riders who buy “Adventure style bikes” don’t use them off-road to the capacity of their design, just like pickups. What brand is the suspension? Kayaba, Showa, WP?
YU-AN forks and YU-AN monoshock. A Chinese brand, but the initial impressions are good. Fully adjustable, and the guys at Tuff City Powersports were able to adjust the setting for me on my second test ride (video coming next soon). Yeah, many people buy things more for the look than for the use, but I plan to take mine truly out and about! :-)
@@MotoVenturer i looked more into it, dirt-bike magazine did a review with Jimmy Lewis, he said the forks wee a Showa copy. He actually rode the crap out of the bike and he liked it, for reference he was Dakar racer.
@@rcafmaintainer3723 Awesome! Also, I appreciate the reference re "open and close" as I hadn't heard of that before. Cheers.
What do they cost?
The Kove 450 Rally is about CAD $13K in Canada and about US $9.5K in the USA. Neither cheap nor expensive, but you get a lot of bike for that price.
Do this ride at least once a year it is great except people who ignore MC
Indeed!
you must live near me (North Saanich) - I do that route quite often. That is a great ride.
I think it is a "must do" route for many local riders. Glad to "meet" a neighbour!
My back country area is around Banff and foothills
I've been to Banff, of course, but not really explored the backcountry roads. What would you most recommend for when I'm next in the area? Cheers
Nice video,,, I also have a CRF250L geared up for off-road adventure - yes the larger tank and Rot-Pax allow me to go where ever I desire without worrying about range. I have ridden solo many times but as I approach 70 YO - I have begun to ask myself if having one or more riding buddies makes more sense. Keep the videos coming and I like the video presentation and breakdown into segments for easy review, Well done!
Thank you, Robert - your feedback is much appreciated!
