We’re Jeni and Rich. We’re really just a couple of average Joes. In a nutshell we met and married in our early 20s; I graduated from college in my late 20s; adopted two cats and a dog in the late 90s; sold a house and bought a new house in our mid 30s; then sold the new house and moved onto a sailboat in our early 40s. In between all that we had a bunch of fun like camping, scuba diving, watching hockey games (Go Red Wings!), concerts, traveling, spear fishing, restoring a 1963 Chevy II Nova; spending time with family and friends. A few years ago we decided to lay off all the fun-having to fix up this old boat. We figure if we put our noses to the grindstone for a few years, we’ll be able to travel for a few years and do all the fun things we’ve missed.

Installing a SOLAR Arch for Off-Grid Living | SV Ramble On

We're back in Mexico! But we're not enjoying the serene desert beauty found in the Sea of Cortez. We're working our butts off in the Puerto Peñasco boatyard. Our first project is installing a solar arch. We had a pretty good idea that we needed more solar. We installed some small panels in Long Beach, but what we really needed was a place that wouldn't be shaded by the boom or the radar arch. J...

    Nice video, Rich. I’m looking forward to your update on the solar installation and how that is all working for you. Just because I can’t help myself, I will be that one in the crowd (there is always one) who mentions that your ‘t-nuts’ aren’t t-nuts. They are barrel nuts, sometimes referred to as sex nuts. T-nuts have barbs on the inside face that keeps them from turning. Happy Thanksgiving.

    I always learn something new.. It’s weird moving rudder to get contact.. Seems like something isn’t connecting unless moved.. I like how you finished your solar and arch.. I am impressed.. My wife is concerned about our trip to Mexico next year, we are going to refit our sailboat there.. Just wondering what your monthly cost on the hard is?? ie Mexico compared to California.. We have a lot of work to accomplish in 10 months on the hard.. Knowing who to contact setting up a reservation etc is really important and stressful.. Thanks for sharing your experiences

    • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon Місяць тому

      Hi Rocky - We paid $6/linear foot for the yard space which is a lot cheaper than California. The haul-out was cheaper as well, but I can’t remember the cost. The yard we used is the least expensive in the Sea of Cortez and it’s the hardest to get to by water (all the way up the Sea of Cortez). I’ve heard you can have your boat trucked there from California. They are also changing their pricing to a price per square foot (lots of catamarans up there taking up a lot of space). Getting supplies can be difficult in Mexico (who knew a quart of acetone would cost $25US 🤯). You can bring supplies over the border, but may have to pay 19% duty. The Cabrales yard is great though if you can DIY. There isn’t a lot of skilled labor for hire there.

      @ I looked online most the evening at the three different places in porta penasca and I do like the DIY part a lot.. Our boat is 42 feet long monohaul out of Santa Barbara. When you did your episode in Santa Barbara you sailed right past our boat.. My wife and I giggled “hey that’s our boat on your UA-cam channel”. We have an extensive refit and we are newbies at this boating thing plus not rich.. We live in Idaho as well just a couple of country people so boating is new to us.. We are gonna put on a solar arch plus upgrade the whole solar set up.. Strip the haul fix all c-cocks and paint and anti fouling plus put in a water maker new hot water tank and upgrade fuel tank and fresh water tanks.. Plus new rigging if possible. If we can afford it upgrade the cockpit and make a hard top for cockpit.. It’s a lot of work most definitely but I am retired and my Two boys are excited to help my wife and I do this. Cost is a big concern materials is a concern plus being able to travel back and forth across the border for supplies as needed.. You stopped in San Diego on the way down and got a “TIP” I think from the Mexican Embassy if I am correct?? Was that difficult? We are new at this and would like to take our car across so we have transportation while in Mexico.. Thanks for taking the time to help explain stuff to us it’s very helpful and appreciated.. Sure like your Channel

    So now that you've had the stack pack for 5 years, how do you like it? I've got a traditional mail sail cover with lazy jacks. It's hard to pull down the cover and fasten it due to the lazy jacks. I'm thinking to either replace it with a traditional cover with slots to accommodate the lazy jacks or a stack pack. Never had a stack pack before. Not sure if windage and interference with wind flow matters for a non-racer when using a stack pack. Oh, also my cover now covers the front and sides of the mast with its on-mast winches and hanging lines. Looks like a stack pack would leave those exposed. Important or not?

    • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon Місяць тому

      Hi Rich - We really like the stack pack. It makes it so easy to put the mainsail away. It's true our does not cover the winches or the front of the mast, but it hasn't been a problem so far. We have a halyard bag on the front of the mast for the jib and spinnaker halyards. When our stack pack falls apart, Jeni will be sewing a new one just like it.

    Great video, I always learn something new with you guys.. question was it more economical buying the arch compared to manufacturing yourself? • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon Місяць тому

      I think it’s probably six of one, half dozen of the other. I think it was faster for us to buy the arch and bring it down to Mexico where we could do the work ourselves. I think we could have had it manufactured down here, but I’m not confident it would have looked as nice and clean as we wanted it to look. And finding skilled labor and supplies can be tricky down here. If we had been in the US and had our workshop we could have done it all ourselves.

    Quite an adventure with the rescue.... good on you guys. Makes me want to upgrade my medical emergency kit which is primarily whiskey and pain killers - kidding. I also jigged that anchorage, but in July and kept catching 4' foot sharks so I stopped. After analyzing tides and winds and..... to avoid a strong current on the nose going into San Fransquito... I still screwed up and had the bounciest 30 minutes of my 3 years in the SOC making the turn from south into the bay. I could not stand at the helm it was so bad. 20kts of wind against a 3 or 4 kt oppossing tide, what a shit show.

I just watched this video and want to ask - if you only use the foot switches and not the remote to raise and / or lower your anchor does the remote still count? I'll be rewiring my windlass to install a switch at the helm. I wonder if the Lofrans remote would count correctly, or at all, on a different mfg's windlass. Hmmm.

    Why didn’t you just leave the elbow on the riser and the exhaust hose wouldn’t need to bend?

      Because it wouldn't fit that way.

      Ummm...not sure what you're talking about. We didn't talk about Velcro in this video at all.

    Me personally, while it might not be the best way to do it, is that after putting the sealant down and putting the other object against it, do not fully tighten for a short period of hours, depending on the type of product and conditions you’re using it in. Allowing the sealant to start curing so when you do put pressure on it by tightening, the caulk doesn’t completely squeeze out. In fact, making a gasket before you pull the whole thing together. Hopefully that makes sense.

    Oh my gosh I'm still laughing hysterically at the "bat" in the fridge (which turned out to be a styrofoam ice chest squeaking on the fridge door.) Miss you guys! Lisa
