The Prophecy of RoboCop (1987)

The original RoboCop from 1987 was a much better film than its silly title would lead you to believe and it showed a cynical future that one could argue pretty much came true. In this video we talk about the story, the visual effects, the predictions the film got right and everything in-between. 00:00 - Intro 01:30 - Chapter 1 - The Suit 03:41 - Chapter 2 - The Future of RoboCop 06:41 - Chapter...

To The Lake is a Russian show from Netflix that was filmed in early 2019, a full year before the actual pandemic happened. They filmed the first season which is still streaming on Netflix, but by the time the second season was done, Netflix wanted nothing to do with Russia anymore so they never released it. But we found it, saw it, and are talking about it with no spoilers! 00:00 - Intro 01:18 ...

The Most Important Breaking Bad Episode You Forgot About

Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan, is one of the best shows of all time. But while most people talk about all the great episodes from seasons 4 and 5, season 1 is extremely underrated, especially since it has what I consider the best and most important episode in the whole show. 00:00 - Intro 01:49 - 1. Pulp Fiction is Tarantino's Purgatory | ESSAY
why did it take you five minutes to explain something that I've explained to people in one sentence?
Way better than I remember. Watching it again. 30 Rock is also great
I grew up on Andy Griffith reruns, so I got a good laugh out of that joke.
I will say I don't LOL as much as I used to with the show. But as I get older (I started watched it in about 93 when I was 7 or 8 years old) the more I enjoy it overall.
Wow! You should be an investigative reporter with these sleuthing skills
I think my favourite one is when Dan Castellaneta says D'oh and Lucille quickly says "There it is!"
this video should have been 10 minutes longer
A young (voiced) person liking Seinfeld threw me until I realised it was an AI voice
I watched this episode live when it first aired and got the joke immediately. My favorite is when he's on the phone and says "you forgot to say 'away.'" Then hangs up and says "she's blowing everyone away."
Wait. Calling him Opie was the joke? So subtle it wasn't funny.
Thanks, I missed that.
Frank Sinatra died on the day of the last Seinfeld episode.
So, are you a Millennial? 'Cause you know we had VCRs and even DVRs back then, right? If you recorded your favorites, it was trivial to go back to get jokes on AD, presuming you missed them in the first place. Also, anyone Gen X and older got that joke straight out of the box and effin' died laughing! We all know what killed AD: Netflix. I've often thought that you get the truest and best art when there's some kind of external pressure applied, whether timing, funding, or having idiots in control. AD suffered from all three on Fox, but all that pressure went away with the Netflix revival, the first network series so continued on a streaming service. Freed from the Fox crucible, though, it just ran amok. The scripts were all over the place, the characterizations were off, and pretending Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat were still in their late teens/early 20s defied the most easily gulled person's suspension of disbelief. Seasons one through three? The best comedy on TV. Bar none. Ever. Everything after that, don't even begin to bother.
Of course people had ways of recording and rewatching their favorite shows back then, but how many people did that? Most people would just watch it on TV when it aired and be done with it, unlike today where even the tiniest little detail gets dissected, discussed and reposted everywhere. I only wanted to point out how committed they were to their craft to be doing those jokes in the early 2000s, for just a handful of people. But I really agree with your second paragraph. As much as we hate "the suits" from networks and studios, the pressure they applied on some of these productions is what made them so good to begin with. When you're met with censors and unhappy network executives, deadlines and a ton of standards and practices, you get episodes like "The Outing" on Seinfeld. Not to mention Elaine herself being created because the network demanded a female character. I just wish Fox was more supportive of this show back when it aired, though, like NBC was with Seinfeld. Because a fourth season on Fox back in those days would have been much better than the season 4 we got on Netflix.
There was a joke in season 4 that I really liked (being from season 4, maybe that's saying something). Ron Howard plays a version of himself on the show (that's not the Narrator). In one scene, the Narrator, describing what's going on, he says, "Michael heads over to Imagine Entertainment, where I...conic director Ron Howard works." I just found it so funny.
There's also the elevator scene where the narrator only speaks when Ron Howard isn't on screen
The most overrated sitcom of the last twenty years. Come at me bros.
What you call subtle is actually the most obvious thing in the world to people who aren't children with ADD.
Watch this video at 1.5x speed. The video still sucks, but you will have wasted less of your time. Holy shit, that wasn't even a joke. Wow.
It's more of a subtle nod to the Ron Howard fans.
Uh, this joke isn’t subtle at all. Ron Howard immediately draws attention to it. If anything, it’s probably one of Arrested’s more overt jokes, no?
When this show was new the Opie joke wasn’t that hard to get.
It's not really that subtle, it's just based on a reference you weren't aware of. Did you get the "jump the shark" joke?
Was the clip of Clint Howard (Rons brother) intentional at 2:01?
Yup. Originally I wanted to mention him and Ron’s daughter in the script but figured it served no purpose for this video. And I actually wanted to show his appearance in Seinfeld. But as I cut that out of the script, I thought a short clip of him in EdTv was enough of a reference.
@@BigFilmRevwasn't he a killer who tipped big?
One of the best and funniest shows of all time. And having Ron Howard narrate is just one reason of them many reasons why this show rules!!
Yeah, his narration is perfect in the first seasons. Adds a lot to the show.
Everyone born before 1975 got the joke easily.
Yeah. Not that tough. I was expecting more.
I was born in 1977, and caught it right off the bat watching its first broadcast.
@@nickmatthaes5344 I was born in 1987 and even I still got it.
*Every American. We aren't all American....
Aw yes... a joke for boomers then.
Random trivia: Jessie is played by Jill Ritchie, aka Kid Rock’s sister.
😲
Damn, I had no idea. If I ever do a deep dive into this show, I’m definitely mentioning that. Thanks for sharing!
Ah, there's nothing like having to explain a joke. The biggest problem with AD, and the reason it was never the huge success it deserved to be, is that the show was (and still is) too clever for most people.
The best comedies, like AD, Seinfeld, and 30 Rock, IMHO, are 1) funny for anybody in the times it aired, 2) doubly funny to people with specific interests (I e. film, pop culture), and layered writing, for revelations upon repeated viewing
Very true.
Arrested Development is so offbeat and quirky. I'm forever running and telling my wife some of the lines. The ones that I get, that is. Not being from the States, I would never in a million years got that joke. I think sometimes they must just sit around laughing at all the inside jokes that they know only a handful of people will get. I think Ron Howard was a great actor, even better director, and I loved the way he was constantly the butt of jokes on this show, shows he also has a fantastic sense of humor. (and that he's just really weird, in a really good way, for coming up with the show in the first place.) Thanks for sharing.
Since I grew up in (Eastern) Germany I had no idea that the Andy Griffith Show existed and that Ron Howard starred in it. But even if I saw the show, I wouldn't have made the connection between Jessie calling George Michael "Obie" and her insulting Ron Howard. Nice observation. I'm on my god knows how many rewatches of AD and while I first thought seasons one and two were on par and season 3 got a little worse but still very good, I now realize that the quality of the show dropped with season two. It is still great comedy, but as you said, the jokes got less subtle and too on the nose - the little jingle that plays whenever Oscar makes comments about Buster being his son is just one example. Nevertheless, AD is still one of the best comedy shows of all time. Well, at least season one to three. I stopped watching season 4 after some episodes because it was just bad.
Yeah, the joke has many layers, it goes by fast and it's so much easier to assume the Narrator is just upset at Jessie for talking like that to George Michael, instead of realizing it's a meta joke about Ron Howard himself getting mad. We take that type of humor for granted nowadays, but the fact that they would even bother to make a joke like that in 2003 goes to show how much effort they put into making AD more than just your typical sitcom.
I have said it before and I will say it again, Arrested Development (S1-3) is the best comedy in television history
YES! Thank you! I've been preaching this for years.
I never saw the fifth season. I remember loving the first 3 seasons - but not the fourth season. I would love to hear your analysis.
As far as I'm concerned, Seasons 1 to 3 are canon and the best television show in history; but seasons 4 and 5 are cringeworthily bad, and on the one hand, they should never have been made. On the other hand, we are still grateful they were made because we really wanted more, so I watched them as an academic exercise, but the only word I can use to describe it is "cringeworthy".
I would have to agree. It should have never been revived. And I think there's a pretty big difference between the first three seasons as well. But I can't really judge them for it, they set the bar ridiculously high with the first season.
Season 4 has some poor pacing, but still has some amazing jokes. Season 5 has no redeeming qualities. I was shocked how bad it was
I wonder how many people if any got the joke when the episode first came out. Seems crazy to me that someone would understand it right away. Maybe someone who knew a lot about Ron Howard
I bet it flew over many people's heads on first viewing, myself included. I probably caught it on my second or third rewatch of the show, and was surprised there were no videos on UA-cam talking about it. You can only find one low quality version of the whole scene, but none about the actual joke itself. I like Ron Howard a lot, by the way. His MasterClass on directing is really good.
Most people got the joke because Andy Griffith show was in heavy reruns on daytime TV when Arrested Development was on. Ron Howard was a household name.
The guy speaking played Opie, the person she's referencing. It's clear from the way Ron delivers his line that he's personally upset.
1:55 I was at the taping of the Zamboni scene after the Ducks-Sharks game on April 9, 1998 at the Shark Tank. We all sat in one section and we were supposed to act scared as the Zamboni sped towards the boards but we all looked way happier than scared and I had a feeling we weren't going to make the final cut. We didn't.
That’s awesome!
I would still say Season 6 and 7 were in the "Golden Age" of Seinfeld. I LOVE "The Mom and Pop Store" and "The Soup Nazi" episodes, and Mr. Steinbrenner ia a hilarious incompetent boss. Season 8 is where the show went downhill, especially with Elaine inheriting J Peterman's company despite only working there for a year and then doing such a horrible job that Mr. Peterman himself comes back to take back command and act like the mistake never happened in the first place.
So no season 9 meaning no K-uger? You heretic!
How can you write a "complex story about morality" when you don't believe in morality? You might need to demonstrate Tarantino's concern for morality, before you base a hypothesis on it. After all, this is the man who boasted that "Violence is so much FUN!"
only took me 30 seconds to realize you are wrong , season 8 and 9 are pretty good , the frogger kills me
Without a doubt the unfunniest show I’ve ever seen
I personally think seasons 5, 7, 8 and 9 were the best ones.
You're not as good as you remember
L take bro the opposite might be the best episode of all time
I've seen every episode multiple times, and I find it just as enjoyable today as I did when it first aired. The fact it is still attracting new viewers demonstrates its ability to hold up over time.
bro is tripping with this video
Yes it is
I disagree. Seinfeld just kept getting better and the scripts more brilliant. I'm one who didn't like the finale, but otherwise it's timeless. I've watched it countless times from pilot to finale and every episode has me laughing.
Well I remember watching the Chinese Restaurant and the Puffy shirt a few days ago and gave me a few chuckles
I own all of the DVD sets and I still watch them and enjoy them. MASH is a show that I used to watch a lot and saw every episode more than once. I couldn't sit through one of those again.
I have seen this movie more times than I can count especially when it was first available on dvd and I now will see that man as Jerry Seinfeld forever. Can’t believe I never saw it before. 😂
The FINALE WAS GREAT!!!
I cant help but disagree, the later seasons in my opinion hold a lot of classic momments the honestly i couldnt picture the characters without em, episodes like the serenity now, the strike and the jerk stores are absoulute bangers that i couldnt imagine the show without.
You’re wrong plus cope plus ratio
