On this channel, I post detailed overviews of products that I have purchased and used. I try to be thorough and follow the information that is provided in operation manuals for accuracy. The videos are not sponsored by the manufacturers. The purpose is to help people understand how to use, and maintain these products, and to provide a close up view of the details. The videos will hopefully help you with a product that you have purchased or, help you determine if this is a product that will meet your needs. I only post videos of products that I like or would recommend.
Tascam 246 Portastudio: Replacing Capstan Belts, Idler Tires and the Pinch Roller
This video demonstrates how to change the capstan belts, idler tires and the pinch roller in a Tascam 246 Portastudio. These 5 rubber parts often deteriorate over time and make the transport section of an older Portastudio unusable. By replacing these 5 rubber parts you can often restore your Tascam 246 to normal working condition. An overview is provided of the step-by-step process to replace these parts and the “Tetrakan” UA-cam channel is also referenced for additional repair detail. The Tetrakan links are provided below. Special thanks to Tetrakan for his excellent detailed videos.

Thank you, this was great! Very helpful!
I am glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video. Fortunately, my replacement battery came with a T5. Thank you for posting this tutorial.
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped you.
wish someone will show how to ASSIGN correctly in PGM mixdown method, so it will be possible to have 4 seperate channels, and not left right mixdown. just allow for EQ and FADER snd EFFECT to do their job in a mixdown of all 4 channels. wonder if anyone came across the same need and found for this a solution
I'm not 100% sure if I understand your question, so I'll leave it to others to comment, in case I don't answer your question with my following suggestion. What I have done, in order to have four separate channels in a mixdown is: I run the 4 PGM outs of my Tascam 246 into 4 separate inputs in my audio interface of my Protools system. I set my Tascam input selector to RMX. This allows the 4 taped channels to route back through the Tascam Mixer and out to the PGM outs. I then set the Assign buttons to each PGM out. (In other words, first track assigned to 1, second track assigned to 2, third track assigned to 3, forth track assigned to 4. I make sure to set the Tascam Pan knobs set for odd & even channels, left or right). I set the CUE/PGM switch to PGM so that I can hear the routed signal that is going through the Tascam mixer. I can then use the EQ, Faders, Effects etc. on the Tascam to shape the sound. Once I get it the way I want it to sound. I Play it into my Protools DAW into four separate tracks. In the end, I get the 4 Tascam tracks, mixed and EQ'd the way I like into four separate Protools tracks. I can then go into Protools to mix and master those tracks down any way I want into one final stereo mix. Again, I might not have answered your question, but I figured I'd give it a try.
I just ordered mine from Amazon too! So excited that I got the right one. This vid's awesome!!
Where can you buy replacement rubber strips?
Hello Angeline, Thank you for your kind comments. You can get the rubber strips on Amazon as well. When you go on Amazon, search "Replacement Laptop Bottom Case Rubber Feet Strips for HP." Make sure you double check your model number and measure your current rubber feet to ensure that you get the right size. Good luck!
Well done! Thank you Whit
Thanks Whit
I don’t know why you even bothered to make this video. You didn’t show how anything is done. Talking isn’t showing. I don’t even think you did the repair. You talk a good game but the thing about UA-cam is showing how something is done.
Well, hmmm, ... I can answer your question. The reason I bothered, was for "me" as a future reference, should I be faced with the problem again in the future. That's why I didn't ask anyone to subscribe, comment, like, tip, seek financial support, or anything, like you see on many UA-cam videos. Frankly, I didn't expect anyone to even watch it. I am shocked that it actually has over 2,000 views and has actually helped others, other than me. I was actually pleased when the first commentor said ... "thanks for the tips ... very helpful". Sorry that wasn't your experience. I bought my machine 38 years ago, when I was a young man. I am now almost 70. When the tape transport didn't work, I thought it was over and done. So I watched hours and hours of videos and then took a shot at repairing it myself. Incredibly, I fixed it and it still works beautifully to this day. So "after it was done" (which I mention in the video), I decided to post it with the goal of helping others by explaining the issue, showing which parts to buy, showing how to approach it, show how to access the areas, give a general description as to what had to be done etc. (Not just "talk".... 30 minutes of pictures, videos, and links.) In the video, I pointed to and provided the links 'in the description' to the Tetrakan videos that showed exactly "how it is done." There was no reason for me to reinvent the wheel as Tetrakan had already done it, BUT, I could save the viewer hours and hours of research that I had to go through. So ... the reason I bothered was to serve as a reference to myself in the future, should I have to do it again, and with the hopes that it might possibly help someone who has a the machine and was wondering why it wasn't working and if there was hope to restore it. I was hoping that between my video and the Tetrakan links that I provided that it might help someone. I decided to post it on UA-cam as I felt it was better than what I had when I was confronted with the problem. If, in the end, it actually helped someone, great. If not ... no harm, no foul, it didn't cost the viewer anything. So, if you have the machine, and the problem, and watch and follow the links that I provided, you can probably get the job done and save hours of research time. Anyway ... for what it's worth, that's why I took the time to at least "try" and help someone rather than invest the time in my own repair and not share what I learned along the way.
@@goodcourseproductions5546 thank you for the thorough explanation of your process. I watch hours of videos on repairing and adjustments to the Tascam 30 series. I wasn’t being sarcastic but too many people post videos with no idea of who is watching or how much they know. With that being said, your video was ok.
@@calvinrichardson3562 Thank you for your kind reply. I completely understand. I actually did hesitate from posting it originally as I hadn't filmed my actual repair at the time I did it as I had no intention of doing a UA-cam video.. I was focused on making the repair. When it was done, I thought maybe I could possibly help someone and figured perhaps anything I could do on the subject would be better than nothing and perhaps including the links that I used would fill in the gaps. Thanks for watching.
Hello, I just watched your video again . I had to replace my battery after about 15 months. The cheap batteries on Amazon are not as long lasting as the original. Just wanted to say thank you again. I sort of knew what to do but your refresher course guaranteed my success. Again thank you and all the best to you.
Thanks for the update. That might help someone who is deciding on whether to buy an actual HP battery or an alternative. I must have gotten lucky, I am still using my Amazon battery over two years later. Since it was 1/3 the price it will be worth it even if it dies soon, since my original HP battery only lasted 3 years. We’ll see! Thanks again!
So helpful! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I have this exact laptop but have no idea which battery to buy. I can't seem to find that info. Even at the HP website. It keeps showing me adaptors.
In my case, I ordered it through Amazon in a Battery store called ANTIEE. It wasn’t the official HP Brand but an alternative that was 1/3 the price (around $30). I am still using it two years later. It is absolutely critical that you get the precise part number from your existing battery as there are multiple batteries for the HP Envy 17. You have to make sure your PRECISE laptop model number is listed in the battery description. My model was bw0xxx. Check your precise laptop model number before buying, it could be different from mine. The one I bought is still on Amazon. If you google the precise “HP Laptop Envy 17 model number battery replacement “ It will also lead you to other battery companies. Good luck.
Thank you sir. Looking at the correct video, yours would saved me some time. Less than five minute I was able to change out my battery. I thought I would had to deal with some IOS system setting updates, but no. Out with old and in with the new re-top shell and Wha-la, good as new.
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks.
You're welcome
Thanks for this video. Was trying to put it together after cleaning and after watching I was able to get it together! Yeah!
Glad I could help!
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you. I'm glad it helped you.
excellent, accurate tutorial, I watched your video Once and ordered the same battery as you and installed it today. I wouldn't have even tried, if it weren't for your video. THANK YOU
Fantastic! I am so happy it helped you. Thanks for your kind comment. Enjoy your new battery!
Couldn't get more clearer than this!! Thank you so much
Repair shop was going to cost me over $250 to replace the battery!!! Now I will do it!!
Great. Just take it slow and make sure, before you order your battery, that you have the exact battery for your "model". There are various batteries for the HP Envy Laptop 17. My model was bw0xxx, yours might be different. Confirm that the battery you buy lists compatibility with your specific model. If you get the right battery, and take it slow, you'll be fine. I am typing this reply with the same computer and battery that was shown in the video ... 2 years later. My battery is still working great. Good luck!
Great tips & very thorough for newbies! My chain came off so mow got figure out how to get it back on correctly
Hopefully you figured this out by now, or consulted the operation manual which does show how to place the chain. If not, my section toward the end, regarding maintenance and clean up, does give a little insight on this issue. Good luck.
@goodcourseproductions5546 Thank you! I did put the chain on correctly & it worked perfectly. Again, Thank you!
Congratulations! Perfect!
Thank you so much for this video tutorial, sir!!! This is VERY helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I use distilled water just to avoid the vinegar cleaning
Thanks for providing the information. Very helpful.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Big thumbs up 👍🏼. I have a 17t ce0000 and the instructions are pretty much identical except for 2 fewer torx screws and one less Phillips. Otherwise identical.
Great to know. Maybe it will help someone else. Thanks for the thumbs up!
Thank you so much sharing your knowledge. I have successfully replaced bulging and non-changing battery in my laptop. Your video also gave me confidence to do the replacement.
Glad it helped you. Thank you for watching and your kind comment.
I have the exact same computer. I'm ordering a new battery now and will follow these instructions. This was an excellent video. Thanks
Thank you very much. When you order the battery make sure that you absolutely check your computer's model number. (Not just HP Envy 17). That HP computer has various model numbers and you could order the wrong battery. My video specifically covers model #bw0xxx. Check yours, verify that the battery you order is for your model number. Good luck.
Thank You So helpful Great Tutorial
Thanks so much. I appreciate it.
I have this saw too, I like it. Need to replace chain after a mishap with a brick.
This is the absolute BEST tutorial. It is very informative and extremely helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I hope everything works out well for you.
By far one of the most well made and professional videos as far as review videos go! Good job!
Wow ... Thank you very much for the kind comment. You made it all worthwhile. Thank you!
Great video for showing me how all the parts fit back in!! Thank you!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and for your comment
Excellent instruction. I am blessed to have found your video. You made this installation go flawlessly. Thank you
You are very welcome. I am happy it went flawlessly for you. Enjoy ... I'm still using the same battery 2 years later. I hope you are as lucky as I was.
This tutor is very detailed and informative. Thank you very much
Thanks for watching!
what replacement battery did you use?
In my case, I ordered a compatible replacement on Amazon. However, it is "critical" that you first check the compatibility chart on the Amazon description to make 100% sure that you have a compatible battery. There are numerous batteries for the HP Envy 17, that vary by the model number. So the one that I ordered for my computer might not be the one you need for yours. You must make sure that your HP model number is listed as compatible with the battery when you purchase it. Mine was as an "ANTIEE" Brand sold by the "power VKZ" store on Amazon. You can find actual "HP" batteries at the following website if you have your "exact" model number. www.laptopbatteryexpress.com/
Hi there , do you have a link to buy the exact same battery for that HP laptop model ? thank you!
You can find HP batteries at the following website if you have your "exact" model number. www.laptopbatteryexpress.com/ However, in my case, I purchased mine on Amazon. I searched the precise model number and bought an "ANTIEE" Brand sold by the "power VKZ" store. It is important that you check the compatibility chart on the Amazon description to make 100% sure you have a compatible battery. There are numerous batteries for the HP Envy 17. I took a chance with a non HP brand because the cost of the HP battery was about $112, whereas the Amazon alternative was $34.50. I took a chance, and it has been working flawlessly two years later. I am using it right now as I type this. Good luck.
This video was extreme well done and I’m that person needing the fundamentals of the chainsaw. This is my first chainsaw ever and I had a couple questions that you hit in depth and learned a lot more that I should keep in mind. Thanks.
I am so happy you found it helpful. Thanks for the nice comment.
Great video, really appreciate the insight. Thanks a lot, I run ours on heat. Extremely dirty so I’m going to run it on cool
Thank you. This past season, I ran mine more on heat than I have in the past. It helped keep our bedroom warm at night, so I kind of preferred it. I did a quick rinse a couple times a week just to prevent dirt build up and then did a more thorough cleaning at the end of each month. It seemed to work well and was not time consuming.
I have an Envy Laptop 17 - cw0555ng. It's brand new, I just had to put in service as my over 15 yrs old Toshiba crapped out. The batterie of my Envy is non charging "dead on arrival". So I googled the problem which led me to your replacement instruction, which as other comments remark, qualify as "excellent". However as for applying the instructions to my cw0555ng, there are no scews unter the "bumpers". I'll try to take off the backplate after removing the 5 Torx screws, and I'll report if I got any further. comment concerns the
Hmmm ... I 'm afraid I can't shed any light on your situation as my HP Laptop is a completely different model (mine is bw0xxx). Sorry about that. Since your laptop is "brand new", I guess my question is ... why aren't you contacting HP? I'm assuming you charged it for an hour or so first, correct? If it is truly "dead on arrival", there should be no reason that you should be trying to hunt down ways to remove the battery. It should work the second you open the box and, if not, close the box and coordinate a return. I would simply call HP, as they have very good customer service. See if they can explain to you how to proceed or coordinate a return.
This is an incredible tutorial. I appreciate the detail on tools needed and potential pitfalls during the disassembly. Thank you!
Wow, thanks for the kind words. I am so happy that it helped you. Thanks again!
thanks... worked great.
Fantastic ... I'm glad it helped you.
hi! thanks for your channel! i just replace new belts, new pinch and new idler tires. now i put play and it stops in 5 seconds... on fast forwr and rew the same only 5 seconds. BUT if i keep pushing the play button keep playing but you still hearing the 5 seconds intention to stop.. and the same with rew and fast forw. the counter works on play mode but in rew and fast forw dont show any movement on the counter... can you help me please... sounds goor and very powerfull rewind and fast forrward. it is only that 5 seconds issue. please help thanks for everything!
Hi ... This might be a long shot, but are you sure you don't have a memory location stored, that is causing it to stop at a certain counter number? Make sure you reset, the memory and the zero return stop. Other than that I'm not sure what else to say. I replaced all of my belts, idler tires, and the pinch roller and I thoroughly cleaned the area with alcohol so that nothing would stick and it all worked well (and still does). If it isn't the memory situation, or something related to the counters, I'm just not sure. You might just reach out to Tetrakan who is linked in my description section. He might have a suggestion.
Excellent. Ty so much
Thanks for watching
Excellent tutorial. I had to replace my HP Envy 17M laptop battery, & the information you provided was critical for me to properly disassemble, remove the old battery and install & reassemble my laptop with the new battery. A word of CAUTION: IF YOU HAVE A FINGERPRINT READER (used for MFA security) you might have an issue with removing the rear panel on the laptop. I thought the screw was stripped, but instead, it was connected to the fingerprint reader. So I held my breath, & popped the rear panel off, & the fingerprint reader remained intact, & I had one less screw to worry about on reassembly. My old battery was bulging, & losing power with each day, so I'm grateful for your instructions. I took the old dead battery to BESTBUY, & they took it off my hands, to recycle it safely.
Thanks again for your nice comment. I appreciate it. Thanks also for the tip on the finger print reader, I don't have that feature (or don't use it), so it wasn't an issue for me but maybe your comment will help someone else. Thanks for mentioning it.
Do you have measurements for the idler tires?
Hi ... I'm afraid I don't have the "measurements" for the idle tires. When I ordered them, I simply went to eBay and searched. They were listed as "Tascam 244-246 Portastudio Capstan Control Belts and Idler Tires" The description does not have the measurements and the user manual and the service manual does not show the measurements either. I just searched eBay again, and they are still available. The belts and tires are still available in a pack for $15. (I had to order the pinch roller separately.). The eBay pack worked perfectly and is still working a year later. Sorry I can't locate the exact measurements, but if you need them, I'd definitely suggest eBay. (They were new, not old or used).
Great walkthru but could you NOT say "KINDA" every sentence.
Thanks for watching, I'm really glad it helped you. As far as the "other thing" I guess I kinda couldn't help myself (lol). (In reality, I think I only said "kinda" "5 times in a 20 minute video, that's not too bad !... you only hear it "once" in the first 11 minutes. (Three of them happened together at the 11:22 mark, so that might have made it feel like "every sentence"). Sorry about that ... I'll try to keep that in mind in the future!
Just what I was looking for, thanks so much. Love your voice ❤
I'm happy it was just what you were looking for. I'm glad it helped you. You have inspired me to take singing lessons! Thanks for your kind comment.
Thank you for such an informative video! Great tutorial.
Thanks so much. I'm glad it helped you!
Omg why so complicated then putting bk together
As I have mentioned to a couple other commenters, in reality, it is not complicated at all. The video is intended to help people who want to "learn" how to do a "complete", thorough, cleaning and descaling as "it is described in the manual". The humidifier was intentionally run non-stop for 3 weeks so that it could build enough bacteria to demonstrate the cleaning process. In reality, on a normal week, "with normal use", my humidifier doesn't build much dirt and bacteria at all. I can usually clean it in less than ten minutes with a fairly simple rinse. If you clean it once a week, and use it normally, it is quite easy.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Why is it so complicated?
In reality, it is not complicated at all. Keep in mind the purpose of the video. The video is intended to help people who have "already purchased" the machine and want to "learn" how to do a complete, thorough, cleaning and descaling as it is described in the manual. The humidifier was intentionally run non-stop for 3 weeks, using tap water, without any cleaning, so that it could build enough bacteria to demonstrate the cleaning process. In reality, on a normal week, with normal use, my humidifier doesn't build much dirt and bacteria at all. I can usually clean it in less than ten minutes with a fairly simple rinse and do it practically with my eyes closed. If you clean it once a week, and use it normally, it is quite easy.
Thank you for an EXCELLANT tutorial. My wife has the same laptop and I couldn't take the 3 torque screws out because I didn't have the T5 size. I have a lot of different torque screws but not that size. I have NEVER even seen one that small. Thank you for identifying everything as you went along. Great tutorial.
Thank you very much. I am really happy it helped you. I, too, had no familiarity with T5 screw drivers until I had the need to replace my HP laptop battery. Through some research of the installation manual I came across that reference and, the next thing I knew, I was on my way to Home Depot to buy a whole set of star type screw drivers. I may never need such a screw driver again but, if I do, ... I am now prepared for any contingency! (side note: I did find, later on, that a Phillips "P1" screw driver was a slightly better fit than the "P0" for removing the Phillips head screws. I used a "P0" in the video, but the manual mentioned that a P1 is a better fit and I tried that and found it to be true.)
Thanks again for the VERY Informative video.@@goodcourseproductions5546
