An Oral History of the Early Pokémon TCG: Community, Competition and Theft
Back in August, I had a conversation with Contempest_Art on twitter about his memories playing the Pokémon TCG competitively as a child. Join in on the conversation as we discuss the speculative market around the game, the dangers of thievery around every corner, and the game itself sometimes.

What is odd is how dumb people think they can just chop off there willy and call them sells a man
Metaphor. Very important.
2:13 BUUUYAAAAAAAAAHHHH
Honestly Shudo did have talent and people tend to forget that he didn't have much control in the series, only in the first movie he had a lot more creative freedom. And that happened only because of an error in checking his scripts before production resulting in the movie actually becoming a success if I'm not mistaken. During the series he could do very little, the numbers of episodes he wrote were small if nothing, most of everything he planned was shat down in favor of a formulaic format, Team Rocket for example wasn't meant to become the butt end of a joke, but to be both competent and flamboyants, good people among a wicked organization. It was because the executives liked the first blasts off that Shudo was then forced to have them always blasts off. There was also the fact that Shudo very first idea for Ash was to then heads out on a journey to discover the meaning of existence and then have a new Protagonist take over. He wanted to have character developments and a story. Ultimately because the executives didn't allow him to do so, Shudo decided to quit because he knew the Formula was a problem and that eventually it would come down crashing down. And as we know it did crash down and hard and Pokemon is not going to recover from it.
Not to be obnoxious about self-promoting, but given your comment, you should watch the most recent Pokemon video I made, about Masakazu Kubo. It gives the other side of the story.
TSUCHIGOMORI?

Omggggg. This is such a greaaaaat video!!!!
I CAME BACK TO MY DANGANRONPA PHASE AFTER A YEAR AND PART 3 OF THIS GEM IS OUT
Great video! Good to see the 4kids flashback interview excerpts getting used
great video, very fair to everyone involved which is unusual on youtube
first in a long time that id say ''criminally underrated'', ur content is what the fandom NEEDS rn
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Shudo really is a fascinating person. He clearly had interesting creative ideas, but he also had a lot of bad ones and made bad decisions. He was clearly passionate about Pokemon, which ultimately led him down a road where if his ideas didn't go his way like Lugia, he would ultimately drink more and abuse substances that weren't good for his body. I feel like TPC/Gamefreak gave him a lot of creative control and spoiled him for sure, because they gave no writer for show as many special privileges like he's gotten. But considering he was reportedly drinking and abusing substances, it did certainly left a mark on Pokemon's squeaky clean image a bit, even if he was using it to get inspiration and boost his own creativity. Honestly I don't think he was a bad guy, but he honestly didn't know his limits at the time with working for the company, but he still was a very creative man for an anime season that's basically a relic of it's time.
It really does explain why she basically was the perfect traveling companion, as in, all she did was travel with no clear ambition of her own to work towards. She really felt like she was just there for the ride. 6:13 This line right here is what angered every pokeshipper in existence for sure. But I still understand that it was really a lot of 4Kids writing and marketing that really changed everything. I still remember those love songs from Misty's POV, even though they never effected the OG JP version. lol
My entire family is comedians I swear to god...Also, one more thing. Midget<3
The real lesson here: Hummus is going places
I love it xD
0:40 this made me lose my shit.
Very good video, I hope more people get to view this, it’s interesting to hear how the TCG used to be back in the day
Glad you enjoyed it!
Any way to watch the original EAGLE series?
@@DONHXC they were taken down. Maybe I’ll reupload them at a later date but not right now as we already have to wait out a strike
@ is there any way you could send me them
So....Shudo said Kasumi had no feelings for Satoshi, yet for some reason teased us that she did in The ghost of maiden's peak? Is the only reason he did that just because he was drunk or something I am genuinely confused right now
You have to let go of the "was he drunk" comment at some point. A writer can have two ideas at the same time: 1) Misty cannot love Ash, because making that part of her character would make her an ordinary girl that an all-male writing team would make boring and easily replaceable, and romance would distract from the themes he had planned, 2) At some point he wanted to write a love story in the Pokemon anime, so juxtaposing Brock and James against Ash and Misty drove the point home that he wanted to make. He doesn't say what that point is explicitly, but I'm sure he had one.
@FunyarinpaFoundation so you're saying that Shudo wanted Ash and Misty to be a couple, but just wasn't able to because of time constraints? I'm not trying to argue here I just want answers.
When the show was meant to be 80 episodes long, it's possible that they were intended to be the end game just based on how the anime, games and manga all handled Misty; it's pretty clear she was meant to be the "girlfriend" character, not just to Ash, but also to Red. But if the anime goes on forever, as it ended up doing, then obviously that would get old very quickly if it couldn't ever be realized. Shudo probably gathered that an unreciprocated crush for Misty would more or less kill her character outside of that, and an unresolve romance plot would kill the show for what he intended of it. When he was writing the Lugia movie, he was dwelling on the idea of "how do I make Misty interesting without romance, because romance will make her ordinary?" He decided on the existential crisis (for lack of a better way of putting it), and that didn't make it into the movie due to conflict with the producer.
@@FunyarinpaFoundation so he was initially intending Misty to be Ash's love interest, but he gave up on it? Or would it be like transceiver shipping in black/white 2?Was the producer Shukichi Kanda against the pairing if so, why? The 80th episode of the anime premiered after the first movie after all. Also, Red didn't even end up with Misty in the games or The manga so there's no way for sure that was their intention.
Think about it from the perspective of episode 1 and then from movie 2. Separately. From episode 1, the intention was for a year-and-a-half series of 80 episode. Whatever the 80th episode involved was the end. Mewtwo was always meant to happen before the end, so that Pikachu's rebellion would make sense in that context. Shudo's vision for the final scene was a send up of Stand By Me, so who knows what if anything would've been resolved with Misty. Who knows if he felt they needed anything. I think he was fine with writing things implying it, because who cares if it's over in 80 episodes? By movie 2, it was clear that Pokemon was not going away, so Misty needed something interesting to keep her from being replaced like Brock had been. One of the go-to's would've been romance because boy and girl in a cartoon leads that direction. Shudo was against it though - romance would spoil the plot and it would make Misty uninteresting because his male writing team wouldn't do it well. I know why you're asking about Kanda, but I don't know. He left far less of a paper trail than Shudo did.
It was very surreal and fun to take this stroll down memory lane! Hope yall enjoy!
The opinion of one man does not a law make.
Figures the dude with a tryhard pfp would say cop shit and try to make it sound smart.

Incredible video! So glad this was recommended to me! Wanted to leave a comment to hopefully help bost engagement because it deserves far more views than this!
Thanks for sharing!!
Another excellent video, Truth! Seriously, you make some of the best videos on this site and this one is another banger. Thank you (and everyone that helped) for your effort!
Fantastic and very informative. Another banger video.
Are you saying that Misty was supposed to have an existential crisis? Man, if this is what drugs do to people that I feel bad for Shudo.
It worked for Mewtwo.
@FunyarinpaFoundation why did it work for Mewtwo but not Misty?
@@aaronfield7899 The scene that would've included her crisis breakdown was too violent, according to the producers.
@@FunyarinpaFoundation Well....no offense to Shudo, but I never got the vibe of her learning The meaning of existence
@@FunyarinpaFoundation Are you sure that Shudo wasn't drunk when he wrote his blog?
12:05 Oh GOD, I was thinking about that, but didn't think I'd be showing up here. If I happened to spread misinfo that's my bad - gotten a lot better about that these days, I like to think.
I mean that video is like 10 years old. It just happened to be the most popular one on the subject, which you can't really account for.
So at 15:00 kubo wanted to get the anime for the april season. Could this be because of school starting and kids would be around other kids to start chatting about it to market it?
That may be one of the reasons why the spring anime season is the way that it is, but hearing Kubo talk about it, it was more just a matter of if we wait too long we're going to miss the bus.
@@Dealortruth thanks truth awesome video btw
Excellent work! Incredibly researched as usual - and the visuals/editing turned out so well! The PowerPoint segment especially was even more effective than I thought it would be. Great call there
12:24 You got a source on that? It’s a long-standing rumor and I’ve been wondering that myself but I could never find any concrete evidence on that being legitimate. I do have to say this was a great video regardless. I'll argue that while the Pokemon anime doesn't get as "weird" as it did back in the early days, it does still do stuff I never thought I'd see as a longtime viewer - Sun and Moon bringing up the concept of death and how they dealt with it sticks out as something that totally blindsided me. While I think the anime only gets better with time, I still have a soft spot for the weird early days.
Yes. It's in Pokemon Story, a book I talked about a lot in the video I put out a few days ago about Pokemon's first executive producer. There's a chapter about the anime's pre-production, which discusses why they decided on Pikachu (everyone agrees it was Kunihiko Yuyama's idea; Yuyama says "because it was popular") and stuff about Team Rocket. My translator for these videos recently scanned it onto Internet Archive; check my twitter account (truthordeal) for a retweet of the file.
Bruh considering the current state of Pokemon, this makes that Shudo's vision won this round again 💀
Yeah, in a way, the 3DS era, was the calm before the storm I totally imagine Kubo rolling on his future grave if this aint fixed quickly But Shudo is probably watching in heaven throughout all this 🗿
Yk as much as I despise Kubo's "treatment" of creators (as Shudo described) I gotta praise his skill for making Pokemon a global phenomena and it wouldn't have got in this world if not for him 😐
@@braingamingroblox8617 Well actually, after Shudo disappeared from Pokemon, and according to his animestyle columns on the franchise, he was treated fine by the staff and yes, even "Gozensama" So sleep well tonight
@@r.v.suncion8950 I mean, if we look at those videos detailing the modern state of Pokémon, we can see how some of Shudo’s ideas might be applied for now. It might be viewed as “not Pokémon” or “edgy” by a plethora of Pokefans (cough cough young fans cough cough) but hey, at least the fans will have something refreshing. And besides, Shudo made it clear that he wanted a story that keeps up with their growth. We’ve got long time fans of the franchise, so an adult oriented show wouldn’t hurt too much. Just keep the soul of the franchise. that's more important. But let’s agree to disagree: even if it was right that some parts of Shudo’s plans had to be told “no” cuz they “sucked”, we have to accept that Kubo’s sucked too lol
I can understand why they disagreed with his ideas, but I'd still watch anyway. I mean we’re talking about appealing it to the big audience (kids essentially), but.. let’s be realistic, The First Movie seems to be incredibly good for the fans, even among little kids, so it can't be that bad of a concept, as dark as Kubo might think. Aaaaand no, this doesn’t mean that a spin-off might not be particularly sensible, as it would risk undermining the widely celebrated image of the Pokémon mascot. I personally would appreciate seeing Pikachu in a different context, but I imagine that children might not share that sentiment. After all, the AniPoke's sole message is to let you know that Pokemon ain't tools of war, but your friends that will withstand a wailord's bodyslam that can kill a human in one shot if you believe in them enough (cap). I guess, as long-time fans, it's so much sunshine and rainbows for that reason, both for the anime, the games and some... I think there's no harm in making a change after 25 years. Maybe let the writers cook the new anime we have and finally accomplish something and give the spotlight to somebody new after Liko. Works for other works like Jojo, so it would work for this one too. Let’s be frank here, I think that the times we live in 2025 are the “”””””ideal”””””” environment for making a change in the things the games and Ash anime portrayed. There are hella bunch of bad people around us and we are exposed to many "darker" truths of the world via the media. So it'd probably not do much harm to include carefully addressed dark/mature/serious themes in a style Shudo wanted for the franchise (Not that they don't already exist, but they're usually hidden in random npc dialogue or are only subtly implied, but if you want to, np) TL:DR Just don’t let Gozensama cook for Legends: Z-A.💀
These videos are genuinely incredible.
they should stop bombing elephants in this show
insane algorithm pull
You've been doing astounding work with these videos, I can't thank you enough for providing the best anipoke coverage of the decade.
Thank you!
This could've been the shittiest pokemon video on UA-cam and I would still regard it as the best of all time exclusively because it acknowledges bakusou kyoudai let's and go at all LIKE OH MY GOD I WAITED 7 YEARS FOR THIS MOMENT!
I was surprised to find it had a cult following in Europe, but I guess that's more and more normal with some of these niche Japanese shows.
Not until looking at the Team Rocket wanted poster did I put together that Joy, Jenny, Jesse, and James are all foils. It also makes more sense now why James sticks out so much and is so incompetent
The narrator is a character of its own lol
When I tried to say q in the part with the three way standoff it said "say his real name" then I went with Delta and they accepted that
“delete the account” its all i heard
If you’re having trouble hearing the video correctly… may I suggest reading the very clearly placed subtitles?
2:15 Me after passing the assessment
as a pokemon fan hearing Shudo did Goshogun made me genuinely cry as that is in my top 5 TV original Mecha anime
"No anime writer will ever be trusted to create a Pokemon again." Actually, leaks have revealed that the Mythicals from the reboot movies (Marshadow, Zeraora, and Zarude) were all designed by the anime staff first, specifically for the movies. That's why they have literally zero lore tying them to the actual games.
Remember. Same universe as Oshi No Ko.
