Maria Borja used a patchwork of different dialects in her text. So far, I know Tabang = help and Mauilayao = shy in Bisaya (general dialect in the central group of islands). The Philippines has 7,107 islands and while not all islands have their own dialect, there are many regional/provincial dialects, with Tagalog being the "main" one. Some of the words stitched sound like it's from Panggasinan (up in the northern main island), but I haven't bothered enough people to help me translate :)

I loved the presentation. Thank you for igniting my curiosity! I would like to know more on various topics of the episode and of various elements of the samplers. The two headed eagle struck a particular cord of my curiosity. I know it as a prominent symbol of the Byzatine Empire which ended in 1453 (much earlier that the date on the sampler), and of the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith. The fall of the Byzantine Empire forced populations to Western Europe. And now I want to know more about what this symbol represented at the time of the sampler (1713).
