    @Staples1010 - how did you get the 'effect' of different hued colors ? obviously the warm white is coming from the LEDs, but I also see oranges & reds there ... did you spray-paint these colors onto the fabric ? also - what kind of fabric have you used ? is it just regular cotton or is it anything more 'fire proof' ?

    • @Staples1010
      @Staples1010 6 місяців тому

      The LED strip I used is RGB so that allows me to use a controller that can change the colours to Red/Orange with a remote! I actually made an upgrade more recently where I added this to my home automation setup using WiFi and animated the lighting and colours 🔴🟢🔵 The fabric is Polyester but I was sure to check how flammable it was, the stuff I have linked in the description is advertised as flame retardant... Since you've now got me feeling paranoid I've just tested this with some spare stuffing and I can confirm it does not ignite, it melts and stinks but no flame 😅

      @@Staples1010 - thanks so much for the super-fast reply. Forgot to mention how much I appreciated the video and loved the implementation. Quick question about the RGB lights - it sounds like the RGB strip you used has individual LED control, but that doesn't seem to be doable with the RGB light you linked to in the description. Have you switched to a different model ? If so - mind sharing a link to it ? same question about controlling it from smart home - I'm assuming this RGB strip has a Zigbee/Zwave/Wifi radio ? Ideally, for me, I would like an LED strip with individually controllable lights (so I can do some as warm white, some as orange, some as red), but I don't really need to control it from my smart home, as I wouldn't need to change it once I've set the lights. But I'm not sure if there's a controllable model one can buy (without starting to program a chip etc).

      @goformego I'm glad you like my project! The LED strip I used comes in 2 spools of 10m. I set them up separately so I can have 2 colours at once (using 2 LED strip controllers). I think what you're seeing in the video might just be LEDs being closer to and further from the center of the 'smoke'. If you need to control each LED individually, you'll want to look at "neopixels" or "individually addressable LEDs". You'll probably need some Arduino knowledge to get this working and there are a couple libraries that should get you up and running. I think neopixels can be a little expensive so another option could be buying more LED strip controllers and using shorter lengths of led strip? 🤔

    • @goformego
      @goformego 6 місяців тому

      @@Staples1010 - very interesting. after doing some research - it seems like 10m is not something that Adafruit Neopixels / DotStar have (they max out at 5m). Govee RGBIC LEDs are not able to control pixels individually, but rather in sections (which kind of contradicts the "I" part of RGBIC 🤦🏼). Did you end up using RGBIC also ? or regular RGB/RGBW/RGBWW strips (where you control just a single color for the entire strip). Do your strips have 30/60/120 LEDs per meter ? (as your end result looks amazing, and I'd like to mimic that effect without going overboard with the amount of LEDs needed). Also - which power supply (or supplies) did you need to power both 10m long LED strips ? it sounds like a 5V 2A power supply can only power roughly 100 LEDs, which sounds like much less than what you have ended up with. TBH - if I were to do a 'burning liftoff' animation with individually addressable LEDs - not sure how I would code that in the controller, as the strips are going to be meshed into the paper lanterns in a non-traditional layout, so programming something like "do an animation of orange plume going down from the top LEDs to the bottom LEDs" is kind of crazy as I'd need to map the IDs of each LED based on its vertical location within the lanterns (I hope the point I'm trying to make is understood)...

    • @Staples1010
      @Staples1010 6 місяців тому

      @goformego The RGB strip I used is the one in the description, same for the power cable. They are just regular strips but there are 2 spools, I basically set one spool to 1 colour and the other spool to another color. If you're dead set on animating things but don't want to use neopixels, you might be better off using an Arduino and a load of transistors to manage different sections of strip? It could become cumbersome tho... Personally, I'd suggest the wifi controllers and a home automation platform (although it could be costly) 😬

    Great video, I would consider doing this since you made it look easy except for all the cable connectivity. I would probably try to outsource that by installing a pre made arcade joystick. But I found it hilarious that a 10-15 minute flash is "literally the most complicated part of the process" when you took over a year to build the arcade itself.

    • @Staples1010

      You've made a good point! The wiring certainly looks complex, but believe it or not, it's actually way simpler than it looks. Since the IPAC board has labels for all the buttons, it's pretty much plug and play. The majority of the wiring is just +/- daisy chains for the buttons LEDs and a GND daisy chain for the buttons switches, then you just need a wire from each switch to the board. Granted, I'm a lot more comfortable with the hardware side of things than software, but I believe most people would be capable of hooking this up after doing a little research. ILTMS did a great video covering how this works, so if you're really considering building something similar, I'd highly recommend checking it out!

    thanks for sharing this tutorial but i ran into a problem: in the description you said to use 32mm diameter pvc pipes but in the stl files the diameter was 24mm. don't know if its a problem on my end or if its in the files but even trying to resize it didn't result in the right sizes after printing (printing the 2 parts which are supposed to hold the pipes together gave me an inner diameter of the rings of about 28mm and the outer one was 32mm) any idea how to fix that without redesigning the whole part?

  • @AMakBTYT

    Nice but with all that insulation, ur gonne get blockages and stuff with ur prints. For example the recent Creality K1 asks you to take off the top cover when printing pla as it can cause clogs and mess with the filement while its in the hotend, and that top cover is literlly like 5mm thick. But this would be great for printing stuff like ABS, PETG and ASA. also how did u get ur power cable in there?

      Just get the Pi 3B, it has no issues. The extra power of the 4 is like the difference between Golden Eye running choppy at 30fps or running choppy at 35 fps. Yet the real trouble maker when it comes to heat is the really weird not-so-gigabit ethernet controller of the 4, no idea who made that chipset, but it is horrible. Also the regular HDMI port is prefered. And don't forget a USB audio interface, as the Pi audio jack is sounding appaling.

    • @Staples1010

      Adding lights was actually my original idea! I was going to use some translucent filament and had some cool ideas as to how to charge it externally to keep the electronics as small as possible but unfortunately it would have still been too much to fit inside the model :( it could easily be done if you weren't bothered about it moving but I preferred the functionality. One idea could be to use glow in the dark filament for the light blue areas but I've heard that stuff can be notoriously hard to print with. I'm glad you liked my project :D
