the worst? kids... I tried with renault kwid or fiat mobi next time
Sometimes the worst car is the best car. I have a 2004 Neon RT, just hit 300k and runs awesome. Original drive train and almost everything else.
Hone the bores, fit 3 new pistons & let it do another 200k.
Great job. I saw Aisin stamped on the side of the engine. Is this engine really made by Aisin for Mitsubishi? That would be a good thing.
Just purchased my 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage, and I love it. It averages 46.9 miles to the gallon overall.
Only a 3 cilinderr engine. Besides the piston sides and the cilinderwalls the engine looks amazing. Probably a new set of pistons and some boaring would do the trick. Amazed how far this little engine got and how good it still looks. Regular oil changes with filters with good oil gets you a long way. Little carbonbuild on top of the pistons as well. Japs really know to build engines and cars.
That is decent miles for a little engine.
Thank you. I own a 2015 Mirage with 106k miles. I finished paying it off a month ago. And I look forward to a few more years with it
Mitsubishi is giant in heavy industry and very profitable company. I read somewhere that apparently their automotive division is a pet project. It is funded just because the company has the $ to do so.
love my 2019 mirage ( 50,000 ) miles but watch for potholes! Rinky dink tires! blew out 2 tires already!
i talked to a lady that show me she had over 300 thousand miles and no problems she loved her car
How often do you change cvt fluid?
I tried to keep it replaced every 50,000km/30,000miles.
313k miles in 7 years. That's 44k miles a year 😮
Yeah. This was one of the delivery cars in a fleet I maintained. Some of these these cars were putting on 12,000km/7400 miles a month. The rest put on 6000km/3700miles a month. All got an oil change every month.
Good One
I still have my 2015 mitsubishi mirage. It now (Dec 2024) has 205,000 miles on it and I commute in and out of nyc. Best car I've ever owned, haven't replaced anything I didn't need to (breaks, wipers, ect.). I've been on top of the oil and taken care of the car, this baby has taken care of me! Best $12,000 I've ever spent.
524331 kms is extraordinary for a Mitsubishi Mirage with the original engine.
I would own a manual but not the cvt.
3:02 , I was impressed there were no plastic parts( like the impeller) , as soon many manufacturers have gone this way, namely, European ones...
Noice comes from the Pistons rubbing against the wall, Rings are probably shot.
Im just surprised that the cvt lasted this long
So overall in the last 5-8 years has Mitsubishi made decent cars/suv’s?
Isn't it amazing that an Asian 3 cylinder engine is pure Bulletproof. Yet Ford's 3 cylinder ecotrash motors are pure JUNK. that won't make it to 100k. America is building disposable Junk on purpose for turnover sales.
What oil was used? 0w20 or 5w30
0w20
the cleanest engine i have ever seen for this kind of mileage
Have to repair mine. Cost is ok for part but labour is ouch. But I understand the time and pain to body .
Yeah, it’s a bit of a pita on these. A new cabin filter wouldn’t hurt too. I’d hate to have to pay someone to do this job! The shop I work at now has a $150/hr shop rate.
Im paying 90@@turdpailsandtrails
Yes cabin filter .. and check everything.
Have the Manuel trans. Awesome car
That's a good car
My wife and I just bought a 17 mirage with 90K amd it drives really good. We plan on keeping it.
Was about to buy one as I was amazed how it drove for such a small car and engine. Good tech as well. Built well enough to go across the country and with very good fuel efficiency. As someone who is single and travels alone a lot, this is a good vehicle.
Was this car automatic transmission or manual With this mileage ?
Was a cvt. I already replaced it in this car at 300,000km. There were/are a few Mirages in this delivery car fleet with closer to 600,000km that are still running the original engines(with no piston slap) and transmissions.
@@turdpailsandtrails I think the problem with CVT is they cannot handle too much power, and people put their foot down on the gas pedal. For those folks, don't buy this car. Anyway don't get too enthusiastic, won't be sole in North America after 2025
@turdpailsandtrails I currently have a chevy spark with 70 thousand miles on it with manual transmission, idk if i should keep the car in this case or trade it for a mirage sedan with cvt transmission
@@DavidZo-f2o If there's nothing wrong with the Spark why flog it? They do have more power than the Mirage and I'm pretty sure they handle better. We had a 2014 Spark in the fleet at work for a few years but it had a cvt replaced twice under warranty. Car wasn't driven after the second replacement and was just sold for dirt cheap. They're nicer to drive but just aren't as reliable in my opinion. But it's probably cheaper to keep what you already have running, especially since the manual transmission is slowly becoming extinct.
@turdpailsandtrails the spark I'm having is a great car , I've never had any issues with it but the only thing that I'm worried is the mileage since i drive alot .
Mitsubishi's version of the Dacia Sandero. Incidentally, Renault-Dacia, Nissan and Mitsubishi have common interests. Just capitalism in its latest incarnation.
How a simple engine and regual maintnence can make wonders
ive been working at a mitsu dealer for 4 years now and the mirage will go to war and win they get abused and keep on going without ever showing sign of failure
Great video! Is it the same for the T31 X-trail?
I'm not sure if the T31 is the same. I don't think they sold that model here.
Wow, this video is impressive. I had a 1987 Hyundai Excel, essentially a clone of the Mitsubishi Mirage. When it hit 10 years and 60,000 miles I wasn't inclined to keep it, but the Hyundai dealer convinced me to do the 60K service @$1,500. "It will run to 100,000 miles"he promised. But the engine was dying a year later @63,000😱a reputable mechanic convinced me to ditch it,"everything on this car is cheap, don't repair it"🙁so i donated it to a charity, very disappointed 🙁since then, I've sworn never again to own a Hyundai or Mitsubishi...but, have to admit, your Mirage is a minor miracle! Congratulations ❗
I maintained a fleet of these things that were used as delivery cars for the last 10 years. There was almost 40 at one time. I have 2 of my own too. They easy to work on. I had an 86 excel too. It was an oil burning turd with a slipping clutch. Reverse opening hood. It didn’t share any parts with the Mirage that I’m aware of. The Dodge Colt was a rebadged Mitsubishi.
@turdpailsandtrails thank you...sorry your Excel was a lemon too... I can see you know much more than me , but everything I read says the 86 Excel had the drivetrain and similar body of the 83 Mirage in Japan that was rebadged Mitsubishi Precis!?
A Hyundai would not look like that but lets face it, Hyundai would be lucky LUCKY !!!! to make it 100,000 !
Will you rebuild them?
No,I just replaced it with a lower mileage engine from a wreck. I’m The cylinders were scored pretty bad, not sure if they were salvageable.
Send this to Doug DeMuro😅
Who?
This piston slap is due to "eco driving" aka pushing the motor hard on low revs.
How come that some people can drive over 400.000 miles with this engine? Here in Germany the Mirage (named here "Space Star") has huge problems. Some of them have a dead engine after only 30.000 miles due to piston slapping. They constantly scratch on the cylinderwall. Sure this can happen to any engine, Piston Slapping is not an uncommon thing and not everytime a problem. Most Pistons have some play. But on the Mirage we have many reported dead engines after a short amount of miles. So yeah, don´t know what to think about this engine/car.
I worked as a fleet mechanic on this fleet of 30-40 Mirages(and a bunch of other vehicles) used for parts deliveries since 2014. After seeing how well they held up when driven by people who beat on them daily, I bought a used 2014 with only 37k kms. It had piston slap! I drove it for a year like that then had the engine replaced under warranty/recall at 50k kms. I sold it and bought another 2014 with 280k that had transmission problems(cvt). 6 months later it spun a rod bearing....Bought a used cvt and engine with under 6000miles and it should last until the car rusts away now. I wonder what oil they spec over there? Here they call for 0W20 in these cars. Piston slap seems to be relatively common on these cars, mostly with higher miles I find(300,000km+). I believe Mitsubishi changed the piston material or coating in 2017 to try and help prevent excessive skirt wear. One possible cause for piston slap/cylinder wear might be from washed out cylinders? These cars can flood easily if started cold and shut off before the engine is warmed up. There was a recall for 2015 and older models to try and help with that but it didn't solve the problem completely.
I agree red high heat rtv
He didn’t say the worst car you can buy. He said the CHEAPEST* NEW* car you can buy.
Extraordinary video. Japanese. Good intervals and perhaps also quality fuel being burned. Cars in Britain get hammered, lots of stop start etc Greetings from England 🕯️
Factory waterpump at over 500,000 kilometers, now that's impressive!
If you rotate it from the driver's side, without removing all those parts on the right, does it not come out? It seems to me that everything you opened on the right is for nothing...or is it just me?
I thought the same thing until I tore into it. Unfortunately the motor has to come out the right side. The hole on the left side is too small so you’re forced to take the rh side of the box apart to slide it out that way. Great design👌
Amazing...Speedometer shows it can reach 200km with 3 cylinder and 75 horse power. Love it but sad to see it goes to junk yard.
@@callmebackfriday2 this car wasn’t scrapped. I replaced the engine with a used one. I think the 200kph is a bit optimistic
The red stuff is gasket material
but there’s no red gaskets, seals or sealant used in these engine’s. It’s never been opened up before or had any gaskets or seals replaced.
@ I think they used a small amount of Red Silicone at the cylinder head. Ive seen similar Red debris in VAG engines they use red Orings and silicone…
U are a legand
My blower motor just went. I’m crying watching this but I’ve replaced entire front end steering and suspension among other mechanically inclined projects. Still makes me sad this 20 min video will probably take me 7-10 business days 😂
Yesh it’s fun. Take your time. The trickiest part was figuring out how to unlock the motor from the housing and which way to twist it. 2 of the bolts holding the right side heater housing to the center part was a bit of a pita too. I can see it being nearly impossible if you don’t have go go gadget fingers. I recently had to remove a starter in a Chevy colorado(2016 V6,4x4). It was way more of a pita than this escape heater motor. Had to remove the left inner fender, exhaust pipe/cat,steering shaft, unbolt both engine mounts and trans mount, jack up engine and support it, remove the entire engine mount from The frame and engine and engine block, then you could see the starter. Had to get the starter out to get to the torque convertor bolts…turned what should have been a 3-4hr job into a 12 hr(book time) fiasco🤮
@@turdpailsandtrails my hands are pretty big so it makes projects like this where I call in the Calvary. I’m teaching my 7 year old car stuff so I can use his little hands! Thanks for taking the time to make the video and respond to everyone! This is what the internet is for!
Looks like piston slaps. Had a friend with a similar issue and turned out to be the pistons. They sleeved the engine on the car and it’s driving like new.
Yeah, I agree. I believe they used different herbs and spices in the pistons for the 2017 and newer Mirages to try and help with that. It didn’t work.
Fantastic video, this challenges what I believed. Sure regular oil change needed, but the story here is the gasoline. Sooty pistons on the 450,000km yet dinner plate clean piston faces on these three 524,331km pistons. What brand and gas Grade please? Let me guess ... regular grade gasoline, so on the first engine maybe the Stoichametric ratio became a bit rich with age, below say 13, while this 2nd engine the mixture was fine and stayed around 14.7 Stoich Ratio
Both cars used the same fuel. Fueled up at a small local chain called Hughes with regular 87 with ethanol(how much, I don’t know). The 450k engine was used mainly in and around the city, lots of idling too. The 524k car was used on a long out of town run for 3/4 of its life. Running at 100-120kph for most of the day. Until recently I looked after a fleet of 30-40 Mirages(and other stuff used for deliveries)for 10 years. They’re easy to fix and keep going. Even the cvts could last if they weren’t thrashed on too hard and the fluid was kept clean.
@@turdpailsandtrails Thankyou. Ethanol gas (likely 10%) burns cleaner and certainly explains the clean pistons on hwy use car. Can build up soot in around-town cars due to its water content. About the Oil filter... RYCO Z411ST (Synthetic Technology) is a recommended for this 1.2L 3-cyl. ST filters, also called SynTek, have filter membrane only 20 micron so can ONLY run 0W-20 oil. this is only synthetic oil Most engines run membrane 35 micron oil filters that suits traditional SAE30 oil grades like 10W-30 Where you showed q 0W-20 oil you likely used a 20 micron filter too. Please look at the filter inside plate to see stamped 20 or 35
@shanequinn8356 I used Mitsubishi filters from new til about5-6 years ago. Used mz690072 most of the time, then switched to the smaller 1230a105. I don’t know the specs. For the last 5 or so years used wix filters. Started with a 51356(as per wix), then a few years later they stopped recommending that # and listed the 57356 as the new proper #. Both are 21 micron filters, according to the specs on rock auto.
@@turdpailsandtrails Your video has changed my doubts of synthetic oil. Now I see these 21 micron filters keep the oil super clean Only 0W-20 oil is thin enuf to not clog when engine is cold and only comes as synthetic. You have nailed the lubrication. About the piston wall scouring: E10 gas (10 ethanol) keeps the carbon build-up away so there's not any chance of carbon stuck in the oil ring to scour the bore. Let's say something has to wear first, the bore or the replaceable piston? Mitsubishsi chose the piston and they know more force on one side. Since Zinc, Phosphorous and Molybdenum are the 3 lubricant elements in oil, maybe an additive of one of these might help, but I doubt it. You prove to me that doing exactly what the maker recommends, especially Oil filter and Oil combo, gives the max engine life. Thanks again
